Set the monitor to its highest supported refresh rate in Windows first, then select the same mode in each game. In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, choose the gaming monitor, and select the highest refresh rate available at the resolution you intend to use. Next, check the game’s Video, Display, or Graphics menu and select that resolution and rate, or enable the game’s highest-frame-rate or uncapped option.

If 144 Hz, 165 Hz, or 240 Hz is missing, the limitation is usually the selected display, resolution, monitor input, GPU output, cable, driver, monitor setting, or a Windows feature such as Dynamic Refresh Rate. The instructions below isolate each possibility without forcing an unsupported mode.

What refresh rate you are actually changing

Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is the number of times a monitor can update its image each second. A 144 Hz panel has a maximum update opportunity of 144 times per second; 165 Hz and 240 Hz panels have higher limits. Frame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), is the number of frames the game and GPU produce. The two figures are related but not interchangeable.

  • A game rendering 90 FPS cannot provide 144 unique frames per second, even when the monitor is configured for 144 Hz.
  • A GPU producing 200 FPS cannot make a 144 Hz panel physically refresh at 200 Hz.
  • Variable refresh rate (VRR) can synchronize the panel to changing frame delivery within the display’s supported VRR range, reducing tearing and uneven pacing, but it does not raise the panel’s physical maximum.

A high FPS counter therefore does not prove that the monitor is refreshing at that rate. Confirm the Windows mode, the game’s display readout, and, when available, the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD).

Check the monitor, resolution, and connection first

Identify the usable specification

Read the monitor manual or specification sheet for the maximum refresh rate at the exact resolution you plan to play. A display may advertise 240 Hz but expose that mode only at one resolution, through one input, or after enabling a documented high-refresh or overclock option in its OSD. Treat the rate as usable only when your monitor, GPU, input, and cable all expose it together.

Use the discrete GPU’s output

If the computer has a discrete graphics card, connect the monitor to that card rather than to a video output on the motherboard. A motherboard connector may be driven by integrated graphics and can expose a different set of resolutions and refresh rates from the card that actually renders your games.

Check the input and cable path

Look at the monitor’s input specification and the GPU’s output specification. DisplayPort is the connection used for VESA Adaptive-Sync on supported GeForce configurations. Certain newer HDMI variable-refresh configurations require compatible HDMI 2.1 hardware. Use the input and cable type specified for the desired resolution and refresh rate; an older or uncertified cable can make a valid mode disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not enable an OSD option named Overclock, Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC Compatible indiscriminately. Turn on only the features documented for your model, then recheck the mode list in Windows.

Set the highest refresh rate in Windows

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
  2. If more than one display is connected, select the gaming monitor in the display diagram or list.
  3. Open Advanced display.
  4. Confirm that the displayed resolution is the one you intend to use.
  5. Open the refresh-rate menu and choose the highest rate shown for that resolution.
  6. Accept the change and keep it only if the image remains stable.

Microsoft states that the rates in this menu depend on what the selected display supports. A rate marked with an asterisk may change the current resolution, so verify both values after selecting it. If the target rate is not listed, do not force a custom timing yet; continue with the connection and driver checks below.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select the gaming monitor when multiple displays are present.
  3. Open Advanced display (some Windows 10 builds label the link Advanced display settings).
  4. Choose the highest refresh rate available at the target resolution and apply it.

The exact wording can vary slightly by Windows 10 build, but the important control is the selected display’s advanced refresh-rate list. Recheck the selected monitor whenever you reconnect a display or change which screen is primary.

What to do when the rate is missing in Windows

  • Re-select the gaming monitor; multi-monitor systems can leave the wrong display active in Advanced display.
  • Check whether the desired rate appears only beside a lower resolution. An asterisk indicates that choosing the rate can change resolution.
  • Open the monitor OSD and look for the documented high-refresh, Adaptive-Sync, or overclock setting.
  • Move the cable to the input recommended by the monitor maker and connect it to the discrete GPU output.
  • Try a properly specified DisplayPort or HDMI cable matched to the required resolution and refresh rate.
  • Update the graphics driver and monitor firmware from their manufacturers’ official support pages, restart, and inspect the list again.

If Windows still does not expose the mode, the current monitor, input, GPU, cable, or driver combination is not advertising it. Use the highest supported mode rather than forcing an unsupported timing.

Configure the graphics-driver control panel

NVIDIA displays

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Go to Display > Change resolution.
  3. Select the gaming monitor and choose the highest refresh rate listed for the intended resolution.
  4. Apply the change, then return to Windows Advanced display to verify that both interfaces agree.

NVIDIA notes that a variable-refresh-capable display can be set automatically to its highest rate when VRR is enabled. The driver cannot create a mode that the monitor, input, GPU, and cable do not expose.

G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible

  1. In NVIDIA Control Panel, open Display > Set up G-SYNC.
  2. Enable G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible, select the display, and apply.
  3. Open Manage 3D settings and set Monitor Technology to G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible.
  4. Return to Change resolution and confirm the highest available refresh rate.

G-SYNC matches the monitor’s refresh behavior to the GPU’s frame rate, which can reduce tearing and stutter. It remains a synchronization feature; it does not turn a 144 Hz panel into a 240 Hz panel.

AMD and Intel graphics

Use the current AMD or Intel graphics application only to select modes it actually exposes, and keep its resolution and refresh-rate choice aligned with Windows and the game. Intel’s Dynamic Refresh Rate Switching is a separate power-saving feature with specific embedded-DisplayPort hardware limits; it is not a way to unlock a higher fixed refresh rate on every external gaming monitor.

Set the refresh rate inside each game

  1. Launch the game after configuring Windows.
  2. Open its Video, Display, or Graphics menu.
  3. Select the same resolution used in Windows.
  4. Choose the highest refresh rate the game lists for that resolution.
  5. Choose Fullscreen or Borderless according to the game’s behavior and your preference.
  6. Apply the setting, restart the game if requested, and verify the game’s own refresh-rate readout or an on-screen overlay.

Some games expose a separate frame-rate limit. Set it to the highest value the title supports, or use an uncapped option when appropriate for your GPU and thermals. An uncapped frame-rate setting affects how many frames the game attempts to render; it does not override the monitor’s fixed maximum refresh rate.

Understand VRR, fixed refresh, and Windows Dynamic Refresh Rate

Variable refresh rate

G-SYNC, FreeSync, and Adaptive-Sync are VRR implementations. When enabled on compatible hardware, the monitor adjusts its refresh timing to the frame rate being delivered within the panel’s supported range. This can reduce tearing and stutter when frame delivery varies.

Enable VRR in the monitor OSD only when the model supports it, then enable the corresponding feature in the GPU control panel. Keep the monitor’s fixed maximum refresh rate configured separately in Windows and in the game. If VRR is enabled but the rate shown in Windows drops, compare the mode list with VRR on and off; the documented highest mode for your connection remains the deciding limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dynamic Refresh Rate in Windows 11

Windows 11’s Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) requires VRR hardware and a display capable of at least 120 Hz. It dynamically changes refresh behavior for supported workloads to balance smoothness and power use. Microsoft warns that DRR should not affect games designed for VRR, but it can limit the maximum refresh rate of games that are not designed for VRR.

Troubleshoot a monitor stuck at 60 Hz or another lower rate

What you see Most likely area What to check
The desired rate is absent from Windows Display selection, resolution, input, cable, driver, or OSD Select the correct monitor, check the rate at the intended resolution, inspect the monitor OSD, use the specified GPU output and cable, and update drivers or firmware.
The rate appears only beside a different resolution Resolution-specific mode list Read the asterisk note in Advanced display and decide whether that lower resolution is acceptable; do not assume the same rate is available at every resolution.
Windows is high-refresh but the game is 60 Hz Game presentation setting Open the game’s Video or Display menu, select the Windows resolution and highest listed refresh rate, apply it, and restart if requested.
Borderless mode is capped or behaves differently Windowed presentation and Windows 11 graphics settings Enable Optimizations for windowed games under Settings > System > Display > Graphics, then restart the title.
VRR is unavailable or unstable Monitor OSD, GPU setting, connection, or compatibility Confirm the documented VRR feature, use the supported DisplayPort or HDMI path, enable VRR in the driver, and set the appropriate monitor technology.
The rate falls after enabling DRR Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate Disable DRR in Advanced display, restart the game, and compare the result with the game’s VRR support.
The monitor loses signal or shows artifacts at the selected rate Cable, input, GPU output, or unsupported timing Return to the last stable mode, replace an uncertain cable, try the specified input, and use the highest mode that remains stable instead of forcing the unsupported one.

Check the physical signal path in order

  1. Return Windows to a stable refresh rate if the screen is blank or unstable; wait for the automatic rollback when offered.
  2. Confirm the cable is plugged into the gaming GPU and the monitor input documented for the target mode.
  3. Inspect the monitor OSD for an input-specific high-refresh or Adaptive-Sync setting.
  4. Test the desired rate at the monitor’s native resolution, then check whether the monitor supports it at other resolutions.
  5. Install the current GPU driver and monitor firmware from the manufacturers’ support pages.
  6. Recheck Windows, the driver panel, and the game separately. If only one layer omits the mode, that layer is the next place to troubleshoot.

How to verify that the setting is working

  • Windows: Advanced display should show the selected monitor, current resolution, current refresh rate, and VRR support when the hardware reports it.
  • Monitor OSD: Many gaming monitors show the incoming refresh rate. Use this as a panel-level confirmation, especially when a game is running borderless.
  • Game menu: A title that exposes a refresh-rate readout should match the Windows mode after you apply its display settings.
  • Overlay: An FPS overlay can show frame production, but treat it as separate evidence from the monitor’s actual refresh rate.

Test with a repeatable scene rather than a loading screen. If the FPS is below the selected maximum, that is a performance limitation, not proof that the monitor has reverted to 60 Hz. VRR may make the display follow the lower delivered frame rate while remaining configured for its higher maximum.

Choosing hardware when your current setup cannot expose the mode

When replacing a cable, monitor, or GPU, compare the complete signal path rather than relying on a headline such as “240 Hz.” These are the decision points that determine whether the advertised mode will work in your games:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Maximum refresh at the target resolution: Confirm the exact resolution, not just the panel’s highest number at a lower mode.
  • VRR technology and range: Check whether the monitor supports the VRR method used by your GPU and the frame-rate range in which it operates.
  • DisplayPort and HDMI versions: Match the monitor input, GPU output, and cable to the required mode. Newer HDMI VRR configurations may require HDMI 2.1-compatible hardware.
  • GPU compatibility: Ensure the GPU can output the desired resolution and refresh rate and that its driver exposes the mode.
  • Cable requirements: Use a properly specified DisplayPort or HDMI cable for the target signal; an adapter or older cable can narrow the mode list.
  • OSD overclock requirement: Determine whether the desired rate works normally or depends on a documented overclock switch.

A setup is ready when the same intended resolution and refresh rate are available in the monitor’s specification, Windows Advanced display, the GPU control panel, and the game’s display menu. If any one of those layers cannot expose the mode, select the highest stable option that all four support.
