How to Enable the Edge DisableScreenshots Policy in Microsoft 365 Admin Center

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable the Microsoft Edge DisableScreenshots policy to block screenshot attempts made through Edge-controlled keyboard shortcuts and extension APIs. Disable the policy or leave it unconfigured to allow those methods. It is not a universal screenshot ban: Microsoft warns that Web Capture, operating-system tools, and other applications may still capture browser content.

This guide covers the Microsoft 365 admin center workflow, Cloud versus Intune policy choices, assignments, verification, troubleshooting, and rollback.

What the DisableScreenshots policy controls

Microsoft displays DisableScreenshots as Disable taking screenshots. It is a Boolean mandatory policy that controls screenshot attempts Edge can manage, including keyboard shortcut-based captures and screenshot requests made through extension APIs. The policy does not provide data-loss prevention or guarantee that content cannot be photographed or captured by software outside Edge.

Microsoft’s documented limitation is important: Edge Web Capture, operating-system screenshot functionality, and another application may still work when this policy is enabled. Treat it as a browser control that reduces routine capture, not as a complete information-protection boundary. See the official policy reference at Microsoft Learn.

Enable, disable, or leave it unconfigured

Administrator setting Result in Edge
Enable DisableScreenshots Blocks supported Edge-controlled screenshot methods.
Disable DisableScreenshots Allows those methods.
Not configured Allows those methods by default.

The negative policy name causes the common mistake: you enable the policy to disable supported screenshots.

Supported versions and platforms

Do not confuse service requirements with policy support. Microsoft’s current policy matrix lists:

Platform Minimum Edge version for this policy
Windows 77 or later
macOS 77 or later
Android 146 or later
iOS Not supported

The Microsoft Edge management service itself requires Edge 115.0.1901.7 or later. Its documented service coverage includes Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, but the individual policy still has its own support matrix. Microsoft currently documents the service as unavailable to GCC customers.

Prerequisites

  • An administrator account with the Microsoft Edge Administrator role.
  • Users who are signed in to Edge with their organizational account so cloud settings can be retrieved.
  • Microsoft Entra groups for targeting. A group can receive multiple policies, and a policy can target multiple groups.
  • An Intune license if you choose an Intune policy type.
  • Edge versions and operating systems supported by both the service and this policy.

Choose Cloud policy or Intune policy

Policy type Best fit Important trade-off
Cloud policy Cloud-based Edge management with Entra-group assignments and broader platform coverage. Requires Edge sign-in and cloud synchronization; conflicting device policies can override it.
Intune policy Windows management integrated with existing Intune device administration, filters, and RBAC. Requires Intune licensing and this workflow currently supports Windows configuration.

Choose the type that matches your endpoint architecture. Existing Group Policy, MDM, or Intune settings can take precedence when they conflict.

Create the policy in the Microsoft 365 admin center

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  2. Go to Settings → Microsoft Edge.
  3. Open Configuration policies and select Create policy (the portal may show + Create Policy).
  4. On Basics, enter a policy name and optional description.
  5. Select Cloud or Intune, then choose the target platform offered for that policy type.
  6. On Settings, select Add setting.
  7. Search for DisableScreenshots and choose Disable taking screenshots.
  8. Set the value to Enabled. Read More details, select the setting, and continue.
  9. Review the selected setting. Configure or skip extension settings as appropriate for your organization.
  10. On Assignments, select the Microsoft Entra groups that should receive the policy.
  11. Review the configuration and select Review and create.

Creation is not an instant client-side switch. Cloud-policy checks and Edge restart behavior determine when the setting becomes effective.

Roll out assignments safely

Start with a pilot

Assign the policy to a small test group before broad deployment. Include users on each operating system you support and test business workflows that legitimately require screenshots.

Expand in stages

Move from the pilot to a security-sensitive group, then consider wider assignment only after testing. The service can assign a policy to all users, but Microsoft notes that a tenant-wide assignment cannot be changed after the policy is created; do not use it until the scope is understood.

Account for precedence

Existing GPO or MDM policy overrides a conflicting Edge management service policy. Device policy also takes precedence over user policy. Cloud-policy conflicts use priority, with priority 0 highest; Intune configuration policies do not use that same automatic priority resolution.

When does the policy apply?

  • A newly signed-in Edge user is checked immediately.
  • When a user has an assigned policy, Edge checks again approximately every 90 minutes.
  • When no applicable policy exists, the next check may be approximately 24 hours later.
  • After an error, Edge checks again when it opens.
  • If Edge is closed at the scheduled time, it checks the next time it starts.

Cloud policies generally take effect after Edge restarts, although some privacy-related policies can apply without one. Do not promise immediate enforcement after selecting Review and create.

Verify the policy on a client

  1. In the admin center, open Settings → Microsoft Edge → Configuration policies, select the policy, and confirm the setting is DisableScreenshots, the value is enabled, and the intended groups are assigned.
  2. On the target device, open edge://policy.
  3. Select Reload policies, search for DisableScreenshots, and confirm the effective value is true or enabled.
  4. Where shown, inspect the policy source (cloud, MDM, or platform policy) and look for conflicts.
  5. Restart Edge, then test the specific capture methods used in your environment.

Test at least Print Screen, Win+Shift+S, extension screenshot APIs, Edge Web Capture, Snipping Tool, screen-recording software, remote-session capture, and mobile behavior. Results can differ by operating system and Edge version.

Why screenshots may still work

Web Capture succeeds

This can be expected. Microsoft explicitly lists Edge Web Capture as a method that may remain available even when DisableScreenshots is enabled.

Snipping Tool or an operating-system shortcut succeeds

Those are operating-system capture paths outside the policy’s complete control. Confirm that the policy is applied, but do not interpret a successful OS capture as proof that Edge ignored the setting.

A third-party application or camera captures the page

External applications and physical capture devices are outside a browser policy’s scope. Use broader endpoint, application, or information-protection controls when that threat matters.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The policy is missing from edge://policy

  • Confirm Edge is at least 115.0.1901.7 for the management service and meets the policy’s platform minimum.
  • Confirm the user is signed in to Edge with the expected organizational account.
  • Verify actual membership in the assigned Microsoft Entra group.
  • Check that the intended Cloud or Intune policy type was created.
  • Confirm the administrator role, tenant eligibility, and synchronization time.
  • Restart Edge and reload policies.

The policy appears but has no effect

  • Check for conflicting GPO, MDM, Intune, or device-level settings.
  • Inspect policy priority for Cloud policies.
  • Confirm the test method is one controlled by Edge rather than Web Capture or an operating-system tool.
  • Verify the platform and Edge version are supported.

Only some users or devices are affected

Compare group membership, sign-in account, policy source, device policy, Edge version, and restart state between a working and non-working client.

Complementary controls for sensitive data

For confidential browser content, combine this setting with controls appropriate to the risk: Microsoft Purview Information Protection and sensitivity labels, Purview Data Loss Prevention, Conditional Access, endpoint security, watermarking and audit logging, or remote desktop and secure application delivery. These controls address governance or access risks that a browser screenshot policy does not solve. See Microsoft Purview and Microsoft Intune for product details.

Alternative deployment methods

Windows administrators can also use the documented MSEdge.admx policy at Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge → Disable taking screenshots. The registry value is HKLMSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftEdgeDisableScreenshots as REG_DWORD, with 1 enabling the restriction:

reg add "HKLMSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftEdge" ^
  /v DisableScreenshots ^
  /t REG_DWORD ^
  /d 1 ^
  /f

To remove the explicit setting rather than configure an allow state:

reg delete "HKLMSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftEdge" ^
  /v DisableScreenshots ^
  /f

macOS uses the DisableScreenshots preference key with an enabled value such as <true/>; Android uses the same key with true. These methods are separate from the Microsoft 365 admin-center workflow and can override cloud settings.

Roll back or remove the restriction

  1. In Settings → Microsoft Edge → Configuration policies, open the policy.
  2. Either change Disable taking screenshots to Disabled, remove the setting, unassign the target groups, or delete the policy according to your change procedure.
  3. Allow synchronization, then restart Edge on affected clients.
  4. Use edge://policy to reload and confirm the effective value is removed or disabled.
  5. Retest the required screenshot workflow and check for remaining GPO or MDM settings if the restriction persists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does enabling DisableScreenshots block Windows Snipping Tool?

No. Microsoft identifies operating-system screenshot functionality as a possible remaining capture method. Test and control those tools separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use this policy on iPhones or iPads?

No. Microsoft’s current policy matrix lists iOS as unsupported, even though the broader Edge management service supports iOS.

Why is my Cloud policy overridden?

A conflicting Group Policy, MDM, Intune, or device-level policy can take precedence. Inspect edge://policy and compare the policy source and effective value.

The Bottom Line

Enable DisableScreenshots for a targeted reduction in Edge-managed screenshot capture, deploy it first to a pilot group, and verify the effective policy on real clients. Keep operating-system, Web Capture, third-party, and broader data-protection controls in scope because this setting cannot block every way browser content can be captured.
