Open Telegram → Settings → Privacy and Security → 2-Step Verification, create an additional password, then add and verify a recovery email you can still access. After activation, Telegram requires both the normal login code and this password. The email is optional, but without a verified address your recovery choices are much narrower if you forget the password.
What Telegram 2-Step Verification adds
Telegram normally sends a one-time login code to an account’s existing session, phone number or another supported delivery method. 2-Step Verification adds a separate password to that process. Telegram’s official FAQ describes the result plainly: “Once enabled, you will need both an SMS code and a password to log in.” A person who obtains only the login code still cannot complete a new sign-in without the additional password.

The password is set inside Telegram and is different from your email account password, your phone’s unlock code and any password used by a password manager. Telegram also lets you register a recovery email. That address is used to receive a password-recovery code; it is not necessarily the same email address that Telegram might use for delivering a login code. Treat the mailbox as a separate security boundary.

- A current Telegram session: Complete setup from a device where you are already signed in.
- A password you can retain safely: Telegram will ask for it when a new sign-in requires 2-Step Verification.
- An accessible mailbox: You must be able to open it immediately and enter the verification code Telegram sends.
- Control of your Telegram phone number: Keep the number current and under your control, even if you later add another login method.
- A protected email account: Plan to use a unique mailbox password and the provider’s own multifactor authentication.
Do not use a password that you already use for email, banking or another service. A compromise of the mailbox must not automatically reveal the Telegram password.

Enable Telegram 2-Step Verification
- Open Telegram Settings. On a phone or desktop, open the app’s settings panel. Labels can differ slightly by platform and app version, so use the current labels displayed on your device.
- Open Privacy and Security. This section contains Telegram’s account-protection controls.
- Select 2-Step Verification. If it is not enabled, Telegram will offer to create an additional password.
- Create and confirm the password. Enter a strong password, re-enter it when prompted and complete any hint or confirmation screen shown by the app. A hint should help you remember the password without revealing it to somebody who sees the screen.
- Add a recovery email. Enter an address you can access independently of Telegram. This step is optional, but it is the route Telegram documents for recovering a forgotten 2-Step Verification password during sign-in.
- Check the mailbox for Telegram’s code. Open the message, copy the verification code and return to Telegram.
- Enter the code in Telegram. Telegram’s API documentation describes confirming the emailed code as the action that enables the recovery address. If the code is accepted, the address is verified; if you leave before confirmation, do not assume recovery is configured.
- Finish the confirmation screens. Reopen Settings → Privacy and Security → 2-Step Verification and verify that the feature is shown as enabled and that a recovery email is present.
Telegram may change wording or move a control in a future release. The current in-app path and prompts take precedence over an older screenshot or menu description.
Verify that setup works without locking yourself out
Once the app shows 2-Step Verification as enabled, note the password in a secure place before you sign out of anything. A password manager can generate and retain a unique password, provided you understand its master-password and account-recovery process.
You do not need to sign out of every device to prove that the setting is active. The important checks are that Telegram displays the feature as enabled and that the recovery address is marked as confirmed. Keep at least one trusted Telegram session available while you review the setting; it gives you access to account controls if you discover a typo or need to update the email.
How a future Telegram login works
With 2-Step Verification enabled, a new login has two separate stages:

- Telegram requests its normal login code, delivered through the method available for that account.
- After the code is accepted, Telegram requests the 2-Step Verification password you created.
Both pieces are required. The password does not replace the login code, and the recovery email does not become a general sign-in factor simply because it is verified. Telegram distinguishes the recovery address from an address that might receive login codes.
Passkeys are an additional Telegram login method where available. They do not remove the need to secure your recovery mailbox or to maintain control of the phone number associated with the account.
What to do if you forget the 2-Step Verification password
Your options depend on whether Telegram still has you signed in and whether a recovery email was configured and verified.

Do not assume that being able to open the email account guarantees an instant reset. Telegram applies different rules to a logged-in reset and to email recovery during a new login. Use the choices and waiting period shown for your account rather than repeatedly guessing the password.

Protect the recovery email as seriously as Telegram
Anyone who takes over the recovery mailbox may be able to request a Telegram password-recovery code. Telegram explicitly recommends protecting that mailbox with a strong password and its own 2-Step Verification whenever the provider supports it.
Use a unique, high-entropy mailbox password
Make the mailbox password long, random and unique. CISA’s guidance for state, local, tribal and territorial government environments describes “long (16+ characters), random … and unique” passwords; that is a security recommendation, not a Telegram minimum or a requirement imposed by every email provider. A password manager can generate and store such a password, but first check that it works on every device you use and that you understand how its master password and recovery process operate.
Turn on the provider’s multifactor authentication
Open the email provider’s account-security settings and enable its own multifactor authentication. The exact choices vary by provider and region. Review at least the available authenticator-app, passkey, security-key and backup-code options, then keep the recovery methods somewhere you can reach if your primary phone is lost.

A FIDO2-compatible physical security key can be an optional way to protect a supported email account. It is not a factor that Telegram’s 2-Step Verification setup asks you to add, and it will not substitute for the Telegram password. Google describes security keys as its strongest 2-Step Verification option for a Google Account; that ranking is Google-specific, so confirm support and device compatibility with your own provider before buying or enrolling a key.

Physical keys add a separate failure mode: losing the only enrolled key can make account recovery difficult. If you use one, follow the provider’s guidance for registering a spare and storing its recovery codes securely.
Keep your Telegram number current
Maintain access to the phone number associated with Telegram and update it in Telegram if the number changes. Telegram’s FAQ says passkeys are an additional login method and still advises keeping an up-to-date number controlled by you. A passkey therefore complements, rather than replaces, number stewardship and mailbox security.

Enable more than one recovery method only when you can secure each one. An unused backup address, old phone number or unprotected device can become the weakest route into the mailbox.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The 2-Step Verification option is not where expected
Confirm that you are in Telegram’s account settings, not the phone’s general security settings or your email provider’s settings. Open Settings → Privacy and Security and look for the current label. Telegram can adjust menu wording between Android, iOS, desktop and web releases.
The recovery email code never arrives
- Check spam, junk and filtered folders.
- Search the mailbox for Telegram and verify that the address entered in Telegram is spelled correctly.
- Wait for the provider to deliver the message before requesting another code; multiple requests can leave you with several codes and make it unclear which one is current.
- Confirm that the mailbox itself is accessible from a browser or another trusted device.
If the address is wrong or inaccessible, do not treat the setup as complete. Return to Telegram’s 2-Step Verification settings and replace it with an address you control, then complete verification.
The code is rejected
Enter the newest code exactly as delivered, without extra spaces. If several messages arrived, use the code from the latest valid message and follow any expiration notice Telegram displays. Repeated failures can trigger temporary limits; pause and use the current prompt rather than continually requesting codes.
You can sign in but cannot reset immediately
A logged-in password reset is not the same as email recovery during sign-in. Telegram documents a seven-day server-side timer for the logged-in reset flow. Leave the request active only if you understand the displayed consequences, and avoid aborting it accidentally by changing devices or following a conflicting recovery prompt.
You no longer control the recovery mailbox
Do not leave an obsolete address attached to the account. While you still have a trusted Telegram session, change the recovery email in Settings → Privacy and Security → 2-Step Verification, verify the replacement address and then secure that mailbox. If you are already locked out, Telegram may not offer email recovery without the configured address; follow the account-specific alternatives shown in the app.
Maintenance checklist
- Review the 2-Step Verification page after major Telegram updates to ensure the feature remains enabled.
- Confirm that the recovery address is still accessible and verified.
- Change the recovery address promptly when you retire a mailbox or lose control of it.
- Keep the mailbox password unique and update it through the provider’s security settings if compromise is suspected.
- Review the provider’s multifactor devices, passkeys, security keys and backup codes after replacing a phone or computer.
- Store the Telegram password and mailbox recovery information in a secure password manager or another protected record.
- Keep the Telegram phone number current and remove old numbers from your account when they are no longer yours.
Key distinctions that prevent lockouts
Telegram’s two-step password is an account-level login requirement, not an email setting. The recovery email is a verified route for receiving a recovery code, not a replacement for the Telegram password. A reset started while you are logged in can involve a seven-day wait, while email recovery during sign-in is available only when Telegram has a configured recovery address. Finally, a mailbox’s own multifactor controls protect the recovery channel but do not become Telegram factors automatically.
