To enable Tamper Protection, open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection > Manage settings, then switch Tamper protection to On. The setting helps stop malicious apps from changing important Microsoft Defender Antivirus settings.
Turn on Tamper Protection
- Open the Windows Security app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
- Find Tamper protection and switch it to On.

What Tamper Protection does
When enabled, Tamper Protection helps prevent malicious apps from changing important Microsoft Defender Antivirus settings, including real-time protection and cloud-delivered protection. An administrator can still change those settings in the Windows Security app; other apps cannot change them while Tamper Protection is on.
It does not control how third-party antivirus apps work or register with Windows Security. Microsoft also says that installing a compatible non-Microsoft antivirus program automatically turns Microsoft Defender Antivirus off. If the setting is missing or unavailable
If Windows Security says the device is managed by an organization, or the relevant page or feature is unavailable, contact your IT administrator. Some Windows Security pages and features may be unavailable on organization-managed devices. Microsoft’s Windows Security app overview
