How to Enable Steam Play and Proton for All Games on Linux

In Steam for Linux, open Steam → Settings → Steam Play (called Compatibility in some current clients), turn on Enable Steam Play for all other titles, choose the default Proton tool, and apply the change or restart Steam if requested. This sets Proton as the fallback for supported Windows games; it does not override every native Linux build or a game-specific compatibility choice.

What enabling Steam Play actually does

Steam Play is the Steam client feature that lets Linux users install and launch Windows games with Proton. Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool based on Wine and additional components. Valve distributes several Proton builds through Steam and lets you select a default in the Steam Play settings.

The global switch is worded Enable Steam Play for all other titles. “Other” is important: the setting is a default for titles without a higher-priority choice. It is not an unconditional command to run every game through Proton.

  • A native Linux version can continue to be selected instead of Proton.
  • A per-game compatibility setting can override the global default.
  • Some Windows games still fail to launch or need current graphics drivers even after Proton is enabled.

For most users, use the Proton builds supplied by Steam. Installing a locally downloaded build is an advanced option and is not required for the global setting.

Steam Play, Proton, and compatibility tools

Steam Play is the client feature and Proton is the compatibility tool that the feature launches. They are related but not interchangeable terms: enabling Steam Play exposes the option to use a Proton tool, while the selector determines which supplied build is used as the default. Steam can offer several builds at once, so the setting is not a one-time choice that permanently locks your library to a single release.

The global setting is most useful for Windows-only titles that do not provide a Linux build. It gives those games a default tool without requiring you to open every game’s Properties window. If a game already has a native Linux version, or if you previously forced a tool for that title, Steam can follow that more specific choice instead.

Think of the setting as a fallback policy: it tells Steam what to try when no higher-priority instruction says otherwise. That distinction prevents a common misunderstanding after enabling the checkbox: seeing a native Linux game continue to use its Linux build does not mean the setting failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you change the setting

Use the desktop Steam client

These controls are in the Linux desktop Steam client. The exact heading can vary by client revision: look for Steam Play or Compatibility in Settings. The wording of the checkbox and the list of available tools can also change as Steam updates.

Have a working graphics driver

Proton does not replace your graphics stack. Valve’s requirements guidance warns that some newer games need cutting-edge graphics drivers. If a game has demanding graphics requirements, update or verify the driver available for your Linux installation before treating Proton as the cause of a launch failure. A compatibility tool cannot supply a graphics capability that the installed driver does not expose.

Know what result to expect

Enabling the global option changes the default compatibility behavior. It is not a guarantee that every Windows game will work, and it does not establish that one Proton version is best for every title. Compatibility depends on the game, the selected tool, and the drivers on your system.

Decide whether you need a global or local change

Use the global option when you want a consistent default for applicable Windows titles. Use a per-game override when only one title needs a different tool, when you are troubleshooting, or when you want to compare a native build with Proton without changing the rest of the library. A local change is easier to undo and does not alter other games that inherit the global setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable Steam Play and Proton globally

  1. Start Steam and sign in to the account containing the game you want to run.
  2. Open the client menu and choose Steam → Settings.
  3. In the Settings sidebar, select Steam Play. If your client uses newer labels, select Compatibility.
  4. Turn on Enable Steam Play for all other titles.
  5. Use the compatibility-tool selector to choose the Proton build you want as the default. The available entries are the builds Steam currently supplies to your client.
  6. Accept the change. Steam may apply it immediately or ask you to restart the client; restart if prompted.

The selected build now acts as the global fallback for titles that do not have a more specific choice. You do not need to set every game individually just to make Proton available.

After the setting is enabled, open the Library and select a Windows title. Steam may show the usual install and launch controls even though the game is running through Proton. The important verification is not that every game visibly changes, but that an applicable title can install and launch with the selected compatibility tool. Native Linux titles can remain unchanged because they are handled earlier in Steam’s decision process.

Set a different Proton tool for one game

A per-game setting is the practical way to test another Proton build without changing your entire library. It also has higher priority than the global default.

  1. Open your Steam Library.
  2. Right-click the game, or open its game page and use the management control, then choose Properties.
  3. Open the game’s Compatibility section.
  4. Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  5. Select the Proton build you want from the list and close the Properties window.
  6. Launch the game and check whether its behavior changes.

To return the title to the global choice, revisit the same Compatibility section and remove the forced per-game selection. The game will then follow the global Steam Play preference unless another higher-priority rule applies.

Change one variable at a time when troubleshooting. Keep the global default unchanged, select one alternative for the affected title, and launch it again. That makes it clear whether the change helped and avoids unintentionally changing the behavior of other games.

How Steam decides between native Linux and Proton

The global switch is best understood as a fallback, not a universal override. Valve issue discussions indicate that a native Linux version is not overridden simply because the global Proton preference is enabled. A title-specific choice can also take precedence.

In a January 19, 2026 comment in the ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux issue discussion, Valve contributor kisak-valve summarized the priority order as:

“Per-game Steam Play override setting > Manual Valve pinning > Linux native games > Global Steam Play override setting.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This ordering explains several apparently contradictory outcomes:

  • If you force a Proton tool for a game, that choice outranks the global default.
  • A title’s native Linux build can remain preferred over the global Proton setting.
  • The global option matters when no more specific setting determines the tool.
Situation What Steam uses What you should do
A per-game compatibility tool is forced The selected per-game tool Change or clear the game’s Compatibility setting if you want another result.
A manual Valve pinning choice applies The pinned choice in the priority order Review the title’s specific settings before changing the global default.
The title has a native Linux version and no higher-priority override The native Linux build can take precedence Compare native behavior with Proton only when the title’s own settings let you choose.
No higher-priority choice exists The global Steam Play default Set the preferred Proton tool in Steam → Settings → Steam Play/Compatibility.

Manual Valve pinning is included in the priority order because it can sit between a title-specific override and the native-versus-global decision. If a game does not respond to a global change, inspect its own compatibility controls and any pinned choice before assuming Steam ignored the setting.

Choosing between a native build and Proton

When both options are available, make the decision per game rather than assuming that the global setting should replace the native build. The relevant questions are whether the title launches, whether it behaves correctly on your system, which compatibility tool is selected, and whether your graphics drivers meet the game’s requirements.

Option When it is relevant What to check
Native Linux build Steam provides a Linux version and no higher-priority setting forces Proton. Launch behavior and game-specific features on your installation.
Global Proton default The title has no more specific compatibility choice and needs the Windows build. Whether the selected Proton tool launches the game and whether drivers satisfy its requirements.
Per-game Proton override The global choice fails or a title needs a different tool. Test the available tools one at a time and keep the setting that works on your system.

The available evidence does not establish a universal ranking of Proton versions. Do not assume that the newest or oldest entry is automatically best for a particular game; use the title-specific setting and observe the result on your hardware and driver stack.

There is also no need to force Proton merely because the global checkbox is enabled. Leave a native title on its native build unless you have a specific reason to compare it with Proton. If you do compare them, record which option was active so you can restore the configuration that behaved correctly.

What to do when a game does not work

The game still uses a native Linux version

That can be expected. The global option does not necessarily override a native Linux build. Open the game’s Properties → Compatibility section and check whether a per-game choice is already present. If you need to test the Windows build, use the force-specific-tool option for that title rather than relying on the global switch.

The game ignores your selected global Proton tool

Inspect the title-specific Compatibility setting first. A forced per-game tool or another higher-priority choice can outrank the global preference. Clear the per-game override if the game should inherit the default, or deliberately select the required tool there.

The game fails to launch after Proton is enabled

  1. Open the game’s Properties and choose its Compatibility section.
  2. Force a different Proton build from the tools currently offered by Steam.
  3. Launch the game again and compare the result.
  4. If no supplied build works, check the game’s compatibility information and verify that your graphics driver supports the title’s requirements.

Changing the Proton tool is a diagnostic step, not proof that one version is universally superior. Record which selection you made so you can return to the previous choice if needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game opens but behaves incorrectly

Treat this as a compatibility issue rather than assuming that enabling the checkbox was incomplete. Check the title’s compatibility information, then try a per-game tool selection from the builds Steam offers. If the behavior remains unchanged across the available choices, review the game’s graphics requirements and the driver installed on your Linux system.

The Steam Play or Compatibility page is missing

Check that you are using the Linux desktop client and look for the alternate label. Some client revisions call the area Compatibility rather than Steam Play. If Steam asks for a restart after changing settings, restart the client before checking again.

A newer game reports graphics or driver problems

Enabling Proton does not supply a missing graphics capability. Valve’s requirements guidance notes that some newer games need cutting-edge graphics drivers. Confirm that the driver installed for your Linux system supports the game before spending time switching compatibility tools.

You installed a local Proton build but Steam cannot see it

Local builds are an advanced path. Valve documents placing the tool under:

~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/
  1. Place the local Proton tool in that directory.
  2. Completely restart Steam so the client rescans its compatibility tools.
  3. Return to Steam Play/Compatibility settings or the game’s Compatibility properties.
  4. Select the detected local tool where you want to use it.

If Steam still does not list the build, verify the directory location and restart the client again. For most users, Steam-supplied Proton builds are the simpler and better-supported starting point.

You want to undo the global change

Return to Steam → Settings → Steam Play or Compatibility and turn off the global option, then accept the change. Any title with its own forced compatibility selection can continue to follow that per-game rule, so review individual Properties pages if a game still behaves differently afterward.

Global setting versus per-game setting

Decision Global setting Per-game setting
Where to change it Steam → Settings → Steam Play or Compatibility Library game → Properties → Compatibility
Scope Default for applicable titles without a higher-priority choice One selected game
Priority Lower than a per-game override and a native Linux choice in the documented order Higher than the global default
Best use Make Proton available across a library Troubleshoot or deliberately choose a tool for one title
Risk of unintended changes Can alter the default behavior of many applicable Windows titles Limited to the game being configured

If only one game is problematic, prefer the per-game route. It preserves a known-good global default for the rest of the library and makes it obvious which title has an exception. Conversely, if you are setting up a new Linux installation and want Windows titles to be eligible for Proton by default, the global route avoids repetitive configuration.

Limitations you should plan for

  • No universal compatibility promise: Proton is designed to run Windows-exclusive games on Linux, but enabling it does not guarantee that every title launches or behaves correctly.
  • Driver requirements remain: Some newer games require current graphics drivers, and Proton cannot compensate for unsupported hardware or drivers.
  • Tool availability changes: Steam’s labels and the list of supplied compatibility tools can change as the client is updated.
  • Per-game choices can mask global changes: If a title has a specific override, changing the global default may appear to do nothing for that game.
  • Native builds are part of the priority system: A Linux-native version can remain selected instead of Proton.
  • One tool is not guaranteed to suit every title: The correct choice depends on the game and the system, and no universal version ranking is established.

A reliable setup routine

For a library-wide configuration, use this order:

  1. Enable Enable Steam Play for all other titles in Steam’s Steam Play/Compatibility settings.
  2. Select one Steam-supplied Proton tool as the default.
  3. Restart Steam if the client requests it.
  4. Launch a target Windows game.
  5. If it fails, inspect the game’s Compatibility properties and force another available tool for that title.
  6. If the problem persists, check the game’s compatibility information and your graphics-driver requirements.
  7. Use a local Proton build only when the supplied tools and documented troubleshooting path do not meet your needs.

This approach keeps the broad preference in one place while reserving exceptions for games that actually need them. It also gives you a clear rollback path: clear the per-game override to inherit the global choice, or disable the global option if you no longer want Proton as the fallback.

Frequently asked questions

Does “all other titles” mean every game in my library will use Proton?

No. It sets a global default for applicable titles. A native Linux version or a per-game compatibility choice can take precedence.

Do I need to configure Proton separately for every game?

No. The global setting supplies a default. Configure a game separately only when it needs a different tool or you want to test an alternative.

Which Proton version should I choose?

There is no universally best version established for every title. Start with a Steam-supplied build, then use the game’s per-title Compatibility setting if the default does not work.

Will enabling Proton fix a missing graphics driver?

No. Some newer games need current graphics drivers, and Proton does not replace those requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are local Proton builds required?

No. They are an advanced option. Most users should begin with the builds Steam supplies; a local build must be placed in ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/ and Steam must be restarted for detection.

Why did a native Linux game not switch to Proton?

Native Linux versions can rank above the global Steam Play preference. If you specifically want to test Proton, set a forced compatibility tool for that game in its Properties page.

What if a game-specific setting conflicts with my global setting?

The per-game choice wins. Clear the forced tool to let the title inherit the global default, or select a different tool directly in the game’s Compatibility section.

Can I use a local Proton build for only one game?

Yes. After placing the build in ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/ and restarting Steam so it detects it, select that tool in the individual game’s Compatibility properties instead of changing the global default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I have to restart Steam every time I change Proton?

Restart only when the client requests it or when you have added a local build that Steam needs to discover. A per-game selection normally takes effect after you close Properties and launch the title.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does enabling Steam Play force every library game to use Proton?

No. It establishes a global fallback. Native Linux versions, per-game overrides, and manual Valve pinning can take precedence.

How do I choose Proton for one game only?

Open Library → the game’s Properties → Compatibility, enable the forced-tool option, and select the Proton build you want.

What should I do if Proton does not launch a game?

Try another Steam-supplied Proton build in the game’s Compatibility settings, then check the title’s compatibility information and your graphics-driver requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are local Proton builds necessary?

No. Steam-supplied builds are recommended for most users. Local tools are advanced and must be installed under ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/ before restarting Steam.

The Bottom Line

Enable Steam → Settings → Steam Play/Compatibility → Enable Steam Play for all other titles, choose a Steam-supplied Proton build, and restart if prompted. Treat it as a fallback: native Linux versions and per-game choices can take priority. For failures, use a per-game tool override and verify the game’s graphics-driver requirements.
