You can play many installed Steam games without an internet connection, but Offline Mode must be prepared during a successful online session. Sign in with Remember me enabled, finish Steam and game updates, start every game once while connected, allow Steam to save your credentials, then select Steam > Go Offline and shut Steam down normally. Games that require a live connection or an external launcher will still not work offline.
What Steam Offline Mode does
Steam describes Offline Mode as a way to “play games through Steam without having an active connection to the Steam Network.” It keeps the Steam client in a stored, authenticated state so you can launch eligible games when your computer has no internet access.

Offline Mode is not a method for bypassing a game’s own network requirement. It also does not replace a publisher’s launcher, online authentication service, or mandatory update. The practical question is therefore not simply whether a game is installed, but whether all of its startup checks can be completed before you disconnect.

- Steam Cloud does not synchronize while you are offline.
Prepare Steam while you are still online
Complete the following sequence during a reliable internet session. Do not wait until you are already disconnected: if Steam displays a login request, its support guidance says there is no way to bypass that request while offline.

1. Sign in and enable Remember me
- Open Steam while the computer is connected to the internet.
- At the login window, select Remember me before signing in.
- Finish the login and wait for the normal Steam library window to appear.
The remembered sign-in gives Steam the stored information it needs to recognize your account during an offline start. If Steam is currently asking for credentials, reconnect first and complete the sign-in rather than trying to force the client into Offline Mode.
2. Let Steam and every intended game finish updating
Wait for the Steam client itself to finish any update. Then inspect each game you intend to use and allow its download, installation, shader preparation or other queued work to complete. A library entry that says “100% – Ready” is not, by itself, proof that the game can start without a connection; a client or game update can still be required at launch.
For a trip or outage, make a list of the games you expect to play and check them one at a time. Leave enough time for large updates and for a second restart if Steam requests one.
3. Launch every planned game once online
- Start the first game from your library while Steam is connected.
- Wait until it reaches its playable main menu or save-selection screen.
- Complete any first-run setup, prerequisite installation, account confirmation or license prompt that appears.
- Check that the game is not displaying a pending update or an instruction to connect before continuing.
- Exit the game normally and repeat the process for every other game you plan to play offline.
This connected test is more reliable than judging compatibility from the store page or library status. It creates any first-run files and completes authentication that the offline launch may otherwise be unable to perform.

4. Check that Steam may save account credentials
- From the main Steam window, open Steam > Settings.
- Select Security.
- Make sure Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
If that setting is enabled, Steam may not retain the information required to start without contacting the Steam Network. Change it while you are online, then leave the client signed in.
5. Switch to Offline Mode
- Return to the main Steam window.
- Choose Steam > Go Offline.
- Confirm the switch when Steam asks.
Steam should now indicate that it is operating without a network connection. Make this change before shutting down your computer or disconnecting from Wi-Fi so the client can save its offline state.
6. Close Steam normally
Exit Steam using its normal quit command rather than force-quitting the process, killing it in a task manager, or powering off during shutdown. Steam warns that stored information is needed for Offline Mode; an orderly close gives the client a chance to write that information. Once Steam has closed, you can disconnect the computer, disable Wi-Fi, unplug Ethernet or travel to a location with no service.

- Start Steam on the prepared computer.
- Let it open in Offline Mode instead of selecting a reconnect or login action.
- Open your Library and select a game that you tested online.
- Launch it and play normally.
If the game offers local saves, continue using the same local account and installation that you tested. Do not sign out, clear Steam’s local data or switch to a different operating-system user unless you have a specific recovery plan; those changes can remove the stored state Offline Mode relies on.

Features that contact Steam or another service will remain unavailable. That includes online multiplayer, cloud synchronization, store transactions, community pages and any game menu that depends on a live service.
Which installed games are good candidates for offline travel?
Evaluate each title against four practical tests before you leave. The following table separates the checks that determine whether an installed game is likely to start from those that affect what happens after it starts.

Single-player games with self-contained local saves often fit the first column, but compatibility is title-specific. A game can be installed and fully downloaded yet still fail because its own service, an external launcher or a missing first-run component requires a connection.
Steam Cloud, local saves and conflict handling
Steam Cloud pauses while the client is offline. Progress you make during the disconnected period remains on the computer until Steam reconnects. It is not uploaded or backed up to the cloud at the moment you save.

When you go online again, Steam may detect that the local files and the cloud copy have diverged. This is a genuine conflict, not an error to dismiss automatically: choosing the wrong version can overwrite newer progress.
Before changing computers
- Reconnect the original computer and allow Steam to finish its cloud synchronization.
- Wait for any conflict dialog to appear before starting the game on another computer.
- Compare the dates or descriptions shown by Steam and select the copy that contains the progress you intend to keep.
If you must continue offline for an extended period, keep the original computer and its local save files intact until you have successfully synchronized or manually transferred the progress.

Steam asks you to log in
Reconnect to the internet and complete the login. Steam’s support guidance states that there is no offline workaround for a login request when the client is disconnected. After signing in, verify Remember me, confirm that credentials are allowed to be saved in Steam > Settings > Security, switch to Offline Mode again and close Steam normally.
A game says it cannot be started in Offline Mode
- Reconnect the computer.
- Allow Steam and the affected game to update completely.
- Launch the game once while online and wait until it reaches its playable state.
- Exit normally, select Steam > Go Offline, and test the launch again.
If the message returns, treat it as a compatibility limitation. The title may require a persistent connection, an external launcher or an online check that cannot be completed offline. Steam Offline Mode cannot remove those requirements.
The game was marked ready but still fails
“100% – Ready” only describes the library download state. It does not guarantee that the Steam client, a separate launcher or the game itself has no pending update or first-run task. Reconnect and perform the full connected launch procedure rather than relying on the status label.
Preparation will not connect to Steam
Offline Mode must be prepared during a successful online session, so solve the connection problem before disconnecting. Work through these checks:
- Check Steam’s server status to see whether a service outage is affecting sign-in or updates.
- Restart the router and test the connection with another device.
- Try a direct wired connection if Wi-Fi is unstable.
- Review firewall permissions for Steam and allow the client to communicate.
- Temporarily investigate antivirus, ad blockers, proxies, recording utilities, performance boosters and other background programs that may interfere with Steam’s connection.
After connectivity returns, repeat the update and online launch tests for every game that matters to your plans.

Reconnect before trying to repair the offline setup. Start Steam normally, allow it to finish any recovery or update, launch the intended games once online, then select Steam > Go Offline and quit through Steam’s normal exit command. Abrupt shutdowns can prevent the stored information Offline Mode uses from being written correctly.
A practical pre-travel checklist
- Steam starts successfully while online and Remember me is selected.
- The Steam client has no pending update.
- Every intended game has completed its updates and installations.
- Every intended game has reached a playable screen during an online test launch.
- No game depends on a persistent connection or an unprepared external launcher.
- Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected in Steam > Settings > Security.
- Steam > Go Offline has been confirmed.
- Steam has been closed normally at least once after enabling Offline Mode.
- You understand that Steam Cloud will wait for reconnection and may later report a save conflict.
Reconnect periodically
Offline Mode does not deliver Steam client or game updates. Reconnect periodically, especially before starting a newly purchased or recently patched game. Allow updates to finish, launch the game online if its startup requirements changed, and then prepare Offline Mode again before the next disconnected session.
When returning online after playing offline, keep the computer connected long enough for Steam Cloud and other account data to synchronize. Resolve any local-versus-cloud prompt deliberately before using another computer or accepting a replacement save.
Do you need special hardware?
No purchase is required to enable Offline Mode. A Steam Deck, Wi-Fi adapter, Ethernet cable, external SSD, controller or printed manual cannot make a connection-required game work offline and cannot replace an external launcher’s online authentication. Hardware can improve storage, controls or network access, but eligibility is determined by Steam’s stored sign-in state and the game’s own startup requirements.
