The Windows 10 search bar is the quickest way to launch apps, find files, and search inside Settings. When it disappears, it’s usually a taskbar display setting, a disabled search feature, or a broken Windows Search service.
This guide walks you through the easy fix first (taskbar settings), then covers the real-world alternatives when the search bar still won’t show up—down to services, indexing, and policy/registry restrictions.

Before You Start: Identify What You’re Missing
Windows 10 can show different search UI styles. Before you change anything, confirm what’s currently on your taskbar:
- Search box (with a text field like Search or type here)
- Search icon only (magnifying glass)
- No search at all (only app/task buttons)
If you tell your Windows 10 build “Search should be visible” but the UI is restricted by policy or Search is broken, you’ll still get no box. That’s why the steps below start with the settings the UI actually controls.

Method 1: Turn On the Search Box from Taskbar Settings (Fastest)
Most missing search bars are fixed with a single taskbar setting.
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- Select Search.
- Choose Show search box.
If you already see an option like Search icon or Hidden, switch to Show search box. This is the most direct and reliable toggle.
Method 2: Enable Cortana/Search Features (When the Box Still Won’t Appear)
Depending on your Windows 10 version and configuration, the search experience may be tied to Cortana/search integration. If the taskbar toggle doesn’t restore the UI, make sure search-related components aren’t disabled.

Check whether Cortana is disabled by your settings
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to Privacy → Speech, inking, & typing.
- Ensure relevant options aren’t blocking search/speech experiences (especially voice-related features).
- Then open Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
Next, confirm Cortana is present. If Cortana is uninstalled or removed by a custom build, you may still use Windows Search, but some UI behaviors can differ.
Verify Cortana app presence
- In Apps & features, search for Cortana.
- If you find it, open the Cortana page and check whether it’s disabled.
- If you don’t find Cortana, don’t panic—use Method 3 to focus on Windows Search services and indexing.
Method 3: Restart Windows Search Services and Rebuild the Index (Most Reliable Fix)
If the search UI is present but search doesn’t respond (or the bar won’t show reliably), the problem is often Windows Search indexing or services.

Restart Windows Search services
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, press Enter. - Find Windows Search.
- Right-click it → select Restart.
- If you don’t see Restart, choose Stop, then Start.
After restarting, check whether the search bar becomes visible/usable. If not, rebuild the index.
Rebuild the search index
- Press Win and type Indexing Options. Open it.
- Click Advanced.
- Under Troubleshooting, click Rebuild.
- Confirm when prompted.
Rebuilding can take time (often 30+ minutes on typical systems, longer on larger drives). You can still use your PC, but search may be slow while the index rebuilds.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Confirm indexing location isn’t blocked
- In Indexing Options, click Modify.
- Confirm your main drive (usually C:) and folders you care about are included.
- Save changes and wait a bit for indexing to catch up.
Method 4: Check Group Policy and Registry Restrictions
Organizations or advanced users sometimes hide or disable search via Group Policy or registry keys. If your taskbar menu doesn’t offer Show search box (or it keeps reverting), check these restrictions.
Check Group Policy (Pro/Enterprise)
- Press Win + R, type
gpedit.msc, press Enter. - Go to:
User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Start Menu and Taskbar
- Look for a policy related to Search or Don’t keep history (varies by build).
- If you see a policy that disables search UI or search features, set it to Not Configured or Disabled.
- Run gpupdate /force in an elevated Command Prompt.
If you’re on Windows 10 Home, you won’t have gpedit. In that case, use the registry method below (carefully).

Method 5: Repair Windows Components When Search UI Breaks
When system files are damaged, Windows Search and the taskbar UI can behave inconsistently. Running built-in repair tools is a practical fix.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Command Prompt (Admin):
- Press Win, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt → Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Reboot after the scan completes, then check the taskbar search setting again (Method 1).

Common Mistakes and Gotchas
- Choosing the wrong Search option: If you switch to Search icon, you won’t see the search box text field.
- Relying on UI memory: Some Windows 10 builds remember your last search mode, but resets from updates or policies can revert it.
- Disabling Windows Search services: That can remove or break search results even if the UI still appears.
- Index rebuild during heavy use: If the rebuild keeps getting interrupted, search can remain incomplete for longer than expected.
- Registry edits without a backup: If you change keys blindly, you can worsen the problem. Prefer services + indexing first.
Troubleshooting Checklist (If None of the Above Works)
Use this as a fast decision tree. Stop when the issue is fixed.
- Right-click taskbar → Search → Show search box (Method 1).
- Restart Windows Search service (Method 3).
- Rebuild index via Indexing Options → Advanced → Rebuild (Method 3).
- Check for policy restrictions (Method 4) if you’re on a managed PC or the setting keeps reverting.
- Run DISM + sfc (Method 5).
- If your PC is behind on updates, install the latest Windows 10 updates, then re-check taskbar search.
If you still can’t get the search bar back, the most useful info to share is your Windows 10 version (Settings → System → About) and whether you see a search icon or nothing at all.

Why don’t I see the option Show search box under Search?
It usually means a policy restriction or a build/UI configuration is preventing that choice. Check Group Policy (Method 4) and verify your Windows 10 version.
My search icon appears, but the search box doesn’t. What should I do?
First set taskbar mode to Show search box (Method 1). If it snaps back, restart Windows Search and rebuild the index (Method 3).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill rebuilding the index delete my files?
No. It rebuilds the database used for searching. Your files stay in place.

Does this work on Windows 10 Home?
Yes for Methods 1, 3, and 5. Group Policy (Method 4) requires Pro/Enterprise; Home uses registry and service-based fixes instead.
Does Windows Search still work if Cortana is disabled or missing?
Yes. Cortana and Windows Search overlap, but Windows Search itself is powered by Windows Search services and indexing. Methods 1 and 3 matter most.
Bottom Line
To enable the Windows 10 search bar quickly, right-click the taskbar, go to Search, and select Show search box. If the option won’t stick or search acts broken, restart Windows Search and rebuild the index.
If you’re on a managed PC (school/work) or the setting keeps reverting, check Group Policy/registry restrictions. For stubborn system issues, run DISM and SFC, then re-verify the taskbar search setting.
