Enabling Qi Charging on Your Android Device starts with a hardware check, not a setting. Qi is a wireless-power standard built into particular phone models. If your exact Android phone lacks a charging coil and the required circuitry, no app, Android update, USB-C port, or ordinary Qi pad can add it. Find your model in the manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation before buying a charger. On a compatible phone, there is usually nothing to switch on: connect a certified, powered charger and place the phone correctly on it.
What “enabling Qi charging” actually means
Qi charging transfers power through electromagnetic induction between a coil in the charger and a matching coil inside the phone. The phone’s charging controller negotiates power, monitors temperature, and directs energy to the battery. Android does not provide a universal software switch that creates this hardware.

That distinction prevents the most expensive mistake: buying a pad for a phone that cannot receive wireless power. Android version, USB-C, processor, and manufacturer logo do not prove Qi support. Two phones sold under the same family name can have different charging hardware, and regional or carrier variants can differ. Verify the complete model designation, not merely “Galaxy,” “Pixel,” or another brand.

Does my Android phone support wireless charging?
Check the exact model in first-party documentation
- Open Settings > About phone and record the model name and model number. If the phone will not start, check its box, receipt, SIM tray marking, or the manufacturer’s device-identification page.
- Search the manufacturer’s specifications or support site for that exact model and the terms wireless charging, Qi, or wireless power.
- Confirm whether the specification describes receiving wireless power. A phone may support reverse charging while lacking a receiver, or support wired fast charging only.
- Check the listed maximum wireless-power rate and any exclusions for cases, stands, or charging accessories.
Google and Samsung both publish model-specific guidance. Use those pages rather than inferring support from the Android version or the phone’s physical appearance.

Important Google Pixel boundaries
Google’s current guidance says Pixel 10 and later devices support Qi2, except Pixel 10a. Those Pixel 10-and-later models can still use older Qi1.x chargers, but Google specifies charging at up to 5W with that older standard. That is a compatibility detail for the named Pixel models, not a promise about every Android phone.
For Pixel 9a and earlier, Google directs owners to a compatible Qi 1.x charger or Pixel Stand. Google specifically says MagSafe chargers do not work with Pixel 9a and earlier. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is another model-specific case: Google says it does not support Pixel Stand because of coil placement, although it supports other Qi1.x chargers.
Important Samsung Galaxy boundaries
Samsung says most Qi-compatible Galaxy devices can use wireless chargers, but speed and power vary by model. Its support guidance identifies the Galaxy A series, XCover series, and Galaxy Tab devices as not compatible with wireless charging. Selected Galaxy S, Note, and Z devices appear in Samsung’s compatible-device guidance, but the family name is not enough—verify the exact model.
Foldable Galaxy phones require extra care. Samsung instructs users to close a foldable and place its back against the charger. The coil position differs from that of a conventional slab phone, so a stand or vehicle mount that works for one model may not align with another.
How do I turn on wireless charging on Android?
For a phone that already contains Qi hardware, charging normally begins automatically. Follow this sequence:
1. Confirm the phone and standard
Write down the model number and verify receiver support in the manufacturer’s documentation. Note whether the phone supports Qi 1.x, Qi2, or a proprietary fast-wireless mode, and record its maximum supported rate. A charger with a higher advertised output cannot force the phone to accept more power than its design allows.

2. Select a certified charger
Choose a Qi-certified charger that lists compatibility with your phone. Google points Pixel owners to the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) product database for certification checks. For Qi2, Google says the WPC database version number should begin with 2. Samsung likewise advises checking certification when fast wireless charging matters.
Recommended Free Tools
Qi2 adds magnetic alignment, but a magnet alone is not certification. The WPC describes “Qi2 Ready” devices—including phones and accessories such as cases—as delivering the full Qi2 experience only in approved combinations. A generic magnetic ring or case does not automatically make a phone Qi2-certified.
3. Use suitable power for the charger
Connect the pad or stand to the power adapter recommended by its maker. Google advises using an adapter compatible with the phone and notes that a proper wall outlet can charge faster than a laptop USB-C port. Some high-power stands are sold without an adapter; check what is included before setup.
4. Center the phone’s coil
Place the phone’s back directly against the charging surface. The receiving coil may sit above or below the geometric center, especially in foldables, so slide the phone slowly until the on-screen charging indicator appears. A stand should hold the phone firmly enough that vibration or a notification does not move it off the active area.
5. Test without the case
For the first test, remove a thick case, wallet case, card holder, metal plate, ring, or magnetic accessory. Cards and metal objects between the phone and pad can block induction, heat up, or trigger protective shutoff. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance says non-Samsung cases should be no thicker than 5 mm; treat that as Samsung’s model and accessory guidance, not as a universal Qi limit.
6. Confirm charging and manage heat
Do not assume that placement means power is flowing. Look for the phone’s charging animation, status icon, or lock-screen message. Keep the phone and charger on a hard, ventilated surface. Google says a Pixel may pause charging when it becomes too warm and resume after cooling. Heat is more likely in a vehicle, in direct sun, under bedding, or when a thick case traps warmth.

Qi and Qi2: what changes for Android owners?
| Characteristic | Qi | Qi2 |
|---|---|---|
| Core function | Wireless power transfer using a certified charging system | Wireless power transfer with magnetic alignment and Qi2 certification requirements |
| Phone support | Must be listed for the exact model; Qi 1.x compatibility varies | Must be listed for the exact model; Google lists Pixel 10 and later except Pixel 10a |
| Alignment | Manual positioning; coil locations vary | Magnetic alignment when the phone and accessory combination supports it |
| Accessory requirement | Use a Qi-certified charger; case thickness and materials still matter | Use a Qi2-certified charger and an explicitly compatible phone/case pairing |
| Older charger behavior on Pixel 10-and-later models | Qi1.x chargers work at up to 5W, according to Google | Use a Qi2 charger and approved combination for the Qi2 experience |
Google says the WPC database identifies Qi2 certification with a version number beginning with 2. Check both the phone and the accessory combination. A Qi2-ready case may be necessary when the phone supports Qi2 but the case does not provide the required magnetic interface.
How to choose between wireless chargers and phone-and-case combinations
Compare these factors in order:
- Exact model: Confirm that the phone receives wireless power and identify any foldable-specific placement instruction.
- Certification: Look for Qi certification, or Qi2 certification where applicable. For “Qi2 Ready,” verify the approved pairing rather than relying on a magnet in the case.
- Phone limit versus charger output: The phone’s supported rate is the ceiling. A higher-wattage pad does not guarantee faster charging.
- Alignment: Check whether the phone’s coil position suits a flat pad, angled stand, vehicle mount, or bedside dock.
- Case and accessories: Thick, metallic, magnetic, or card-containing cases can reduce or stop charging. Confirm that a Qi2 case is explicitly compatible if you need magnetic alignment.
- Power adapter: Determine whether the charger includes an adapter and whether that adapter can supply the required input.
Why won’t my phone charge on a wireless charger?
The model is not compatible
Return to the manufacturer’s specification and verify the complete model number. Samsung’s stated exclusions include Galaxy A, XCover, and Tab families. If the documentation does not list a wireless receiver, a different pad will not add one; use wired charging or a model-specific receiver accessory only if the manufacturer explicitly supports it.
The charger is not powered or certified
Check the wall outlet, adapter, cable, and indicator on the pad. Test with the supplied adapter or the charger maker’s specified power source. Certification matters because coil design, foreign-object detection, and power negotiation differ among products.
The coils are misaligned
Move the phone by small increments until the charging indicator appears. Third-party pads use different coil layouts, and a large phone or foldable may not sit over the active area. If charging starts and stops when the phone moves slightly, use a stand designed for the model or a charger with a larger alignment area.
The case or an object is blocking induction
Remove the case, wallet insert, cards, metal plate, magnetic ring, camera grip, and nearby metal objects. Test the bare phone for several minutes. If it works without the case, replace the case with one identified as wireless-charging compatible and, for Qi2, one that supports the required pairing.
A cable or accessory is interfering
Disconnect a wired charging cable, USB accessory, or wired headphones if the manufacturer says they can block wireless charging. Samsung includes disconnecting cables and third-party accessories among its troubleshooting steps.

Heat is causing a pause
Move the setup out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, remove the case, and allow the phone to cool. Google says a Pixel can pause charging while hot and resume once its temperature falls. Samsung also warns that poor alignment can make charging slow, stop, or cause overheating.

Samsung specifically advises checking for software updates when wireless-charging trouble appears after an update. If the phone still fails with known-good equipment, use the manufacturer’s support channel; do not repeatedly test a setup that becomes unusually hot.
Pixel-specific checks
- Pixel 10 and later, except Pixel 10a, support Qi2 according to Google. Older Qi1.x chargers remain usable on those models at up to 5W.
- Pixel 9a and earlier require a compatible Qi 1.x charger or Pixel Stand; Google says MagSafe chargers do not work with these models.
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold does not support Pixel Stand because of coil position, but Google says it supports other Qi1.x chargers.
- Use the on-screen wireless-charging indicator and keep the phone cool during testing.
Samsung-specific checks
- Close a foldable and place its back toward the charging surface.
- Center the phone, remove third-party accessories, and disconnect wired headphones or charging cables if charging is blocked.
- Samsung’s 5 mm case recommendation applies to non-Samsung cases in its troubleshooting guidance; it is not a universal Qi specification.
- Samsung notes that its troubleshooting information applies to Samsung wireless chargers. A third-party charger can have different coil placement and behavior, so follow that charger’s instructions as well.
Reverse wireless charging is a different feature
Receiving power from a Qi pad and sharing power from the back of a phone are separate capabilities. A phone can support one, both, or neither.
Samsung Wireless PowerShare
On a compatible Galaxy phone, Samsung’s procedure is:
- Charge the sharing phone to at least 30%.
- Open Quick settings.
- Tap Wireless PowerShare.
- Place the compatible device back-to-back with the sharing phone and adjust position until charging begins.
Samsung says PowerShare turns off after 60 seconds if no device is detected. Position, remaining battery, accessories, and the surrounding environment can affect operation.

When an adapter accessory is the only option
If the phone has no built-in Qi receiver, a conventional pad cannot enable wireless charging. A thin receiver accessory that plugs into the phone’s port may exist for some models, but it is not equivalent to native Qi hardware: it occupies the port, can interfere with cases, may limit wired use, and requires model-specific compatibility. Consider such an accessory only when its maker explicitly identifies your phone and explains power, heat, and case limitations. Otherwise, wired charging is the reliable option.
A safe buying and setup checklist
- Exact model number verified in first-party documentation.
- Wireless receiving support confirmed, not inferred from brand or USB-C.
- Qi or Qi2 certification checked in the WPC database where relevant.
- Phone’s maximum wireless rate compared with the charger’s output.
- Foldable coil position and closed-device requirement confirmed.
- Case thickness, metal, magnets, cards, and accessories assessed.
- Required power adapter included or separately sourced.
- First test performed on a cool, ventilated surface with the charging indicator visible.
Bottom line for enabling Qi charging on Android
You cannot switch Qi on universally. Verify that your exact phone contains wireless-charging hardware, select a certified charger for the supported standard, provide adequate power, align the coils, and remove anything that blocks the charging field. Qi2 adds magnetic alignment but still depends on a certified, approved phone-and-accessory combination. If the model is unsupported, no software setting or ordinary Qi pad can change that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Android update add Qi wireless charging to my phone?
No. An update can change charging behavior or fix a bug, but it cannot install the receiver coil and power circuitry required for Qi charging.
Does a higher-wattage Qi charger charge every phone faster?
No. The phone’s own wireless-charging limit controls the rate, and alignment, case materials, temperature, and the power adapter can reduce it further.
Is a magnetic case enough to make an Android phone Qi2-compatible?
No. Qi2 requires the supported phone and an approved certified accessory combination. A generic magnetic ring or case does not establish Qi2 certification.
