What VoiceOver does
VoiceOver is Apple TV’s built-in screen reader. It speaks the menu item, button, control, or other text currently selected, allowing navigation without relying on sight. Apple TV 4K also supports compatible Braille displays. See Apple’s VoiceOver guide and accessibility overview.
VoiceOver reads the Apple TV interface. It does not describe the action in a film or show; that is the separate Audio Descriptions feature.

- User-friendly and lightweight, providing maximum protection and is anti-slip and shockproof.

Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD: use Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Select VoiceOver.
- Choose VoiceOver to switch it on or off.
When enabled, Apple TV should immediately speak highlighted menus and controls. When disabled, interface speech stops. A voice during video playback may continue if Audio Descriptions is enabled separately.
The current Apple TV 4K guide covers tvOS 26, but labels and availability can vary with model, software version, language, and region: Apple TV 4K User Guide for tvOS 26.
Use the three-press remote shortcut
On Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, press the remote’s Menu button or Back button three times to toggle VoiceOver. Newer Siri Remotes commonly label this control Back; older remotes may say Menu. Press the same button three distinct times.

This is not the same as pressing the center of the clickpad three times. Apple documents a clickpad/touch-surface gesture in connection with Audio Descriptions when VoiceOver is active; it is not the general VoiceOver on/off shortcut. See Apple’s Audio Descriptions guide.
Use Siri
- Hold the Siri button on the remote.
- Say “Turn VoiceOver on” or “Turn VoiceOver off.”
This requires Siri support for the Apple TV’s configured language and country or region, plus a working microphone and a recognized command. In regions without Siri, Apple may refer to the controller as the Apple TV Remote rather than the Siri Remote. If Siri fails, use Settings or the Menu/Back shortcut. Apple lists the supported commands at support.apple.com/en-us/102157.
Apple TV (3rd generation): Apple’s documented activation sequence
Apple’s general support article provides this button-by-button method for turning VoiceOver on on Apple TV (3rd generation):
Rank #3

- Press Down once.
- Press Right repeatedly until Settings is highlighted.
- Press Select twice.
- Press Down repeatedly until navigation stops.
- Press Up four times to highlight Accessibility.
- Press Select twice.
VoiceOver should turn on and begin reading the screen. Apple’s current instructions do not provide an equivalent detailed blind-navigation sequence for turning it off on this model. If you can navigate the spoken menus, use the on-screen Accessibility settings; otherwise, contact Apple Support rather than relying on an unverified sequence.
VoiceOver, Audio Descriptions, and captions are different
| What you hear or see | Likely feature | Where to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Menus, buttons, and highlighted controls are spoken | VoiceOver | Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver |
| A movie or show narrates important visual action | Audio Descriptions | Settings → Accessibility → Audio Descriptions, or the playback Audio options when an AD track is available |
| Dialogue appears as text | Subtitles or closed captions | Accessibility caption settings or playback controls |
Audio Descriptions are available only when supported by the program or service. Read Apple’s Audio Descriptions documentation for the available controls.
Troubleshooting
The three-press shortcut does nothing
- Press Menu or Back, not the clickpad center.
- Make sure the remote is paired and each press registers.
- Confirm the Apple TV is a 4K or HD model; Apple’s shortcut instructions are not the same for every generation.
- Use Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver as the dependable fallback.
Siri does not recognize the command
Check the configured language and region, microphone input, and Siri availability. Then use Settings or the Menu/Back shortcut; the command is not guaranteed in every country or language configuration.
Rank #4
- DESIGNED IN THE USA: ReliaMount – Quick and easy Apple TV installation.
- WHAT’S IN THE BOX: Premium Apple TV mount and mounting hardware. (Apple TV and remote are not included.)
- MOUNT COMPATIBILITY – This mount is compatible with all Apple TV generations and models (including Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi and Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi + Ethernet).
- MOUNT ATTACHES APPLE TV TO THE BACK OF YOUR TELEVISION using a special adhesive that is formulated for the elevated temperatures of televisions. Perfect for televisions that are mounted on a wall. (Screws are also included for optional wall mounting.)
- HOLE-FREE INSTALLATION – Attaching Apple TV to the back of your television eliminates the need to drill holes in your wall. Installation is simple and does not require tools.
The Apple TV keeps speaking during a film
Turn VoiceOver off and test again. If only program action is being narrated, check Settings → Accessibility → Audio Descriptions and the playback Audio menu. Narration can also come from a television, soundbar, streaming app, or another connected device.
You cannot find Settings
Use the Menu/Back three-press shortcut on Apple TV 4K or HD, or Siri if supported. For a third-generation Apple TV, follow the documented activation sequence above and use the on-screen Accessibility controls when possible.
VoiceOver is too fast or too talkative
You do not have to disable it. Apple TV 4K offers controls for speech rate, voice, pitch, pronunciation, verbosity, navigation style, rotor options, Braille, double-click timeout, and audio channels. Open Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver and adjust the available options. Details are in Apple’s VoiceOver settings guide.

Navigation behavior changed unexpectedly
VoiceOver has navigation and exploration modes. Apple documents switching modes with a two-finger tap three times on the clickpad center or touch surface. This is a VoiceOver navigation gesture, not the general on/off shortcut. See Use VoiceOver.
Identify the model before troubleshooting
Apple’s instructions distinguish Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, and Apple TV (3rd generation). Remote button names, menu wording, and available accessibility features can differ by model, software version, language, and region. If the Settings path or shortcut does not match your screen, verify the model and software before trying another procedure.
