On Xbox, the control is labeled “You can join cross-network play.” On Windows PC, it is labeled “You can play with people outside of Xbox services.” Set the relevant permission to Allow or Block in the account’s privacy and multiplayer controls.
That account setting is only one part of cross-play. Each game decides whether it supports cross-platform multiplayer and may provide its own cross-play switch. A game can therefore ignore a platform-wide expectation, use different matchmaking rules, or hide its in-game control on a particular PC version.

What the Xbox cross-play setting actually controls
Microsoft documents cross-network play as an Xbox account privilege rather than as a universal console switch. Its technical definition says that the player can participate in a gameplay session with real-world users who are not signed into Xbox services. The privilege can cover more than finding a lobby: it may govern real-time or turn-based multiplayer, team play, matchmaking, invitations and joining an existing session. See Microsoft’s Xbox services privilege reference.
Allowing the privilege makes those cross-network actions possible when the game supports them. It does not add cross-play to a game that was designed for one platform, nor does it force a game to place every platform in the same matchmaking pool.

Cross-play, cross-platform and cross-network are not identical terms
- Cross-play usually means that players on different platforms can play together in the same title.
- Cross-network play is the account permission Microsoft exposes. It concerns participation with people outside Xbox services.
- Cross-platform matchmaking is the game’s implementation. The developer can decide which platforms, editions, regions, modes and input pools are combined.
Because these layers are separate, blocking the Xbox privilege does not guarantee that every lobby will contain only Xbox-console players or remove every PC player. The game’s service integration and matchmaking rules determine what the lobby actually contains.
Before you change anything
Confirm four details first. Identify the exact Xbox or Microsoft account that the game uses; a Windows PC can have separate Windows, Microsoft Store, Xbox app and publisher identities. Check the exact game edition and platform combination, because cross-play can differ between an Xbox console release, the Xbox PC app version and another PC storefront. Check whether the mode you want—such as a particular playlist, cooperative activity or ranked queue—supports cross-play. Finally, decide whether you want an account-wide change or only a change for one title.
- Account-wide goal: use the Xbox privacy or online-safety privilege. This can affect every supported title using that account.
- Single-game goal: use the game’s own Cross-play, Cross-platform play or Cross-network play control when the title provides one.
- Friend-invitation goal: verify both the privilege and the game’s invitation or session rules, because the documented privilege can cover invitations and joining an ongoing session as well as matchmaking.
No controller, headset, subscription accessory or network device is required to change this software permission. The relevant factors are the account, the game’s service integration and the version of the game you are running.

Xbox: enable or disable the account permission
Use the Xbox account privacy and communication or multiplayer controls associated with the profile that plays the game. The current consumer pages can present different navigation labels by region and account type, so use the setting name itself as the reliable checkpoint.
- Sign in with the Xbox account whose multiplayer access you want to change.
- Open the account’s privacy, online safety or Communication & multiplayer controls. Microsoft’s support material identifies these controls, although the readable support pages do not provide a consistently verifiable, current click-by-click route.
- Find “You can join cross-network play.”
- Choose Allow to permit covered cross-network sessions, or Block to prevent them.
- Save or confirm the change if the page presents a confirmation button, then return to the game.
The Allow/Block choice applies to the account privilege. It is not a per-title preference, so changing it can affect any supported game played with that account.
If the Xbox game still uses the old behavior
Close and reopen the game after changing the permission. If the title was already connected to a matchmaking service, revisiting its multiplayer screen or signing out and back in can cause it to request the updated privilege again. Treat this as a troubleshooting step, not as a universal requirement: games differ in when they refresh account permissions.
Windows PC: change the Xbox account control
On Windows, the equivalent Xbox account permission is labeled “You can play with people outside of Xbox services.” Open the online-safety or privacy controls for the Xbox account used by the PC game and set that entry to Allow or Block.

- Identify the Microsoft/Xbox account that the Windows game uses for multiplayer. A PC can have several Windows or store identities, so changing a different account will not change the game’s permission.
- Open that account’s Xbox privacy and online-safety settings.
- Locate “You can play with people outside of Xbox services.”
- Choose Allow to permit supported cross-network play, or Block to deny it.
- Save the setting and restart or revisit the game’s multiplayer area if the title does not immediately reflect the change.
The setting is account-level even though you are using a PC. It can affect multiplayer participation, invitations, matchmaking and session joining covered by the game’s Xbox services integration.
How to identify the right PC account
Look at the account name shown in the game’s Xbox sign-in or social panel, not only the Windows desktop account. If the game launches through the Xbox PC app or Microsoft Store, make sure the account shown there is the one whose privacy setting you edited. If a publisher account handles friends and parties separately, that service can still impose its own cross-play requirements; the Xbox privilege remains only one gate.
Xbox and Windows labels at a glance
| Where you play | Account setting label | Allow means | Block means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox console | You can join cross-network play. | The account may join supported sessions with users outside Xbox services. | The account cannot join the cross-network sessions covered by this privilege. |
| Windows PC | You can play with people outside of Xbox services. | The account may use supported multiplayer features involving people outside Xbox services. | The account is prevented from those covered cross-network sessions. |
These labels and the privilege scope are documented in Microsoft’s Xbox services privilege documentation. The exact consumer-facing menu path can change, so look for the quoted label rather than relying on an old screenshot or a region-specific sequence.
Why changing the account permission may not change a game
A game must implement cross-platform multiplayer and connect it to the Xbox services permission. Microsoft’s PC policy documentation describes requirements for titles that offer cross-platform multiplayer, but it does not require every title to support it. Read the relevant Microsoft PC and Xbox services policy guidance for the platform context.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe title may not support cross-play
If a game was built with separate platform servers or matchmaking pools, Allow cannot merge them. The account permission grants eligibility; the game still decides whether a session can include another platform.
The game may have its own cross-play switch
Some titles expose a setting such as Cross-play, Cross-platform play or Cross-network play inside their multiplayer, account or gameplay menus. That option is usually per game and can be different from the account privilege. If the game’s switch is Off, changing the Xbox account permission to Allow may not turn it on. Conversely, a title may require both the account permission and its own switch to be enabled.
Your PC edition or storefront can matter
Different PC versions of the same game do not always expose identical controls. Activision’s official Black Ops 6 cross-play support page documents game-specific controls and notes that players using the Microsoft Store or Xbox PC app versions do not have access to that title’s in-game cross-play settings. That is an example of a storefront limitation, not a rule that applies to every PC game.

Use the account setting to establish whether the profile is permitted to participate. Use the game setting, when present, to choose that title’s matchmaking behavior.
What happens when you choose Allow
- The account is eligible for supported sessions involving users outside Xbox services.
- Depending on the title, that can include matchmaking, accepting invitations, joining an in-progress session, team play and other multiplayer actions.
- The game can still keep platforms separate, limit cross-play to selected modes, or apply its own input, region and edition rules.
- Players may need to enable a second, in-game option if the title supplies one.
Allow is therefore a permission, not a promise that a cross-platform lobby will appear every time you search.
What happens when you choose Block
- The account is denied the cross-network sessions covered by the Xbox privilege.
- A supported game may stop allowing cross-network matchmaking, invitations or session joining for that account.
- The result depends on how the title checks the privilege; some games may display an error, while others may return the account to a platform-restricted queue.
- Blocking does not prove that every other player in a lobby is on the same physical platform. A game may classify players through its own service, and “outside of Xbox services” is not interchangeable with “every other platform” in every implementation.
Platform, mode and storefront checks
When testing a change, write down the two endpoints you are comparing—for example, Xbox console to Windows PC—and the exact edition each person owns. Then check the specific multiplayer mode rather than assuming that a game’s general cross-play marketing applies to every activity. Developers can limit cross-play by mode, edition, region or input pool while still offering it elsewhere.
Storefront differences are especially important on PC. A setting documented for a publisher account or a non-Microsoft launcher may not appear in the Microsoft Store or Xbox PC app edition. The absence of a switch is not proof that the account privilege failed; it may be an intentional interface difference. Use the edition’s support documentation to determine which layer controls matchmaking.
Troubleshooting when cross-play will not change
You cannot join a friend on another platform
- Confirm that you changed the Xbox account actually linked to the game.
- Check the account label for your platform: Xbox uses “You can join cross-network play,” while Windows uses “You can play with people outside of Xbox services.”
- Verify that the game supports cross-play for the exact platform editions and mode you are using.
- Look for a separate cross-play switch in the game and enable it if you want cross-platform matchmaking.
- Close and relaunch the game, then try the invitation or matchmaking search again.
You changed the setting but still see other platforms
Check whether you changed the account permission in the direction you intended. If it is Blocked, a title may prevent your participation in cross-network sessions without removing every non-console player from every queue. The game may also use a service definition that does not map one-to-one to the platform icons shown in its lobby.
The game has no cross-play option
Do not assume the account setting is broken. A title may simply provide no player-facing switch, may enforce one matchmaking policy, or may expose different controls in another edition. The Black Ops 6 example shows that even a game with documented cross-play controls can omit them for particular PC storefront versions.
The account page has different wording
Xbox changes consumer navigation and can localize labels. Search the privacy or online-safety controls for the meaning of the documented privilege rather than copying an old menu path. Microsoft’s support pages for cross-play and privacy controls are available at its cross-play help page and its online-safety settings page; their current readable content may vary by region and account context.

The setting appears correct but invitations still fail
Test the privilege with a supported mode and a fresh session. A game may cache the permission until its multiplayer screen is reopened, the title is restarted or the account signs in again. If the friend is using a different edition or storefront, confirm that combination separately. An invitation failure therefore does not by itself identify whether the account, the title or the edition is responsible.

You want to play with a friend on another platform
Set the account permission to Allow, confirm the game advertises cross-play for both platforms, and enable the title’s own cross-play option if it has one. Then restart or revisit multiplayer so the game can refresh the account state.
You want to avoid cross-network sessions
Set the relevant account permission to Block. If the game has a separate cross-play switch, review it as well, but do not expect that switch to override an account-level restriction. The exact lobby result remains title-dependent.
You want to change only one game
Prefer the game’s own cross-play control when it exists. Changing the Xbox account privilege is broader and can affect every supported game using that account.
You share the PC with other players
Check which Xbox account each player selects inside the game. The permission follows the signed-in account used for the session, not simply the physical Windows computer. Changing one account does not automatically change another account’s privilege.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing a Windows sign-in while the game is using a different Xbox account.
- Looking only for a console-style label on PC; the documented Windows wording is different.
- Assuming Allow creates cross-play in a title that has no cross-platform implementation.
- Assuming Block removes every PC or non-console user from every lobby.
- Using an old screenshot as proof of the current menu path when Xbox has changed navigation or localization.
- Expecting a game’s switch to override an account-level Block.
- Assuming every PC storefront exposes the same in-game controls.
- Changing the account permission when the goal is only to alter one game’s matchmaking behavior.
Important limits to keep in mind
- No console, PC accessory or network device is required to change this software permission; the setting belongs to the Xbox account and the game’s implementation.
- There is no single universal cross-play switch that can add support to unsupported titles.
- Platform, storefront, game mode and service integration can change which controls are available.
- Menu names and locations can change over time, so verify the current label shown for your account before saving a choice.
The reliable method is to set the documented Xbox account privilege first, then check the individual game. Cross-play works only when both layers permit it; disabling the account privilege can restrict supported cross-network sessions, but it cannot rewrite a game’s matchmaking design.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Xbox setting called for cross-play?
On Xbox, look for “You can join cross-network play” in the account’s privacy or Communication & multiplayer controls. Choose Allow or Block.
Best Value
What is the Windows PC cross-play setting called?
For Windows PC, the documented label is “You can play with people outside of Xbox services.” Set it in the Xbox account’s online-safety or privacy controls.
Does Allow make every Xbox game cross-platform?
No. Allow grants account eligibility for supported cross-network sessions. The game must implement cross-play and can still limit platforms, modes, regions, editions or input pools.
Does Block remove every PC player from my lobbies?
No. Block prevents the account from covered cross-network sessions, but a game’s own service definitions and matchmaking rules determine which platform players appear in a lobby.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why can’t I find a cross-play switch in my PC game?
Some titles do not provide a player-facing switch, and controls can differ by PC storefront. Activision’s Black Ops 6 support documentation, for example, notes that Microsoft Store and Xbox PC app players do not have that title’s in-game cross-play controls.
Do I need to restart the game after changing the permission?
Not always, but closing and reopening the game or revisiting its multiplayer screen is a useful troubleshooting step if the title still behaves as it did before the change.
Can I disable cross-play for only one game?
Use that game’s own cross-play option when available. The Xbox account privilege is broader and can affect every supported title using the account.
Is special hardware or a separate accessory required?
No. Changing the permission is a software account action. Hardware, controllers, headsets and network equipment do not change the Xbox cross-network privilege.
