OIS is a moving-lens or sensor mechanism built into a camera module, so it works automatically on a Galaxy model and lens that include the hardware. For stronger correction while walking or moving quickly, open Camera → Video and tap the SuperSteady hand icon when it is available. Samsung’s current A-series guide lists main-camera OIS on the Galaxy A17 5G, A26 5G, A37 5G and A57 5G, although regional specifications and One UI versions can differ.
What OIS does—and what “turning it on” really means
Optical image stabilization is a physical camera feature. Tiny actuators move an OIS-equipped lens group or sensor to counter small movements from your hands. The correction happens automatically whenever a supported camera lens and mode are active; there is normally no OIS switch in the Camera app.

That distinction matters when a Galaxy phone lacks OIS. Installing an update, changing a Camera setting or enabling Camera Assistant cannot add the missing mechanism. You can still reduce shake with electronic video stabilization, a tripod or a gimbal, but those are different forms of stabilization.

OIS versus electronic Video stabilization
The Video stabilization control, when Samsung exposes it in Camera settings, is electronic image stabilization (EIS). Software analyzes successive frames and shifts or crops the video to counter motion. It is separate from the physical OIS mechanism. A phone may use both at once, only one, or neither in a particular resolution, lens or recording mode.

Which Galaxy A-series phones have main-camera OIS?
Samsung’s 2026 A-series guide identifies these mid-range examples. The specification applies to the named main camera; it does not automatically mean that every rear or front lens has OIS.
| Model | Main-camera specification listed by Samsung | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy A17 5G | 50MP main camera with OIS | OIS operates automatically on the supported main-camera modes. |
| Galaxy A26 5G | 50MP main camera with OIS | Use the main lens for the stated OIS hardware. |
| Galaxy A37 5G | 50MP main camera with OIS | OIS is listed for the main camera, not necessarily every lens. |
| Galaxy A57 5G | 50MP main camera with OIS | Normal handheld video can benefit from the main-camera OIS system. |
These are Samsung-documented 2026 devices. Availability, camera hardware and feature support can differ by country, carrier configuration and software build. Check the exact regional specification for your model rather than assuming that an A-series name guarantees OIS.
How to check your own phone
- Read the model name and regional model code in Settings → About phone, then compare that exact variant with Samsung’s local specification page or manual.
- Look specifically for “OIS” beside the main or wide camera specification. “Image stabilization” without an optical qualifier may refer to electronic correction.
- Test the Camera app in normal Photo or Video mode with the 1x main lens. The absence of a visible OIS switch is expected; OIS is generally automatic.
- Do not infer OIS from megapixels. A 50MP camera can have OIS, but resolution alone does not prove that the mechanism is present.
Turn on SuperSteady for walking or fast movement
SuperSteady is Samsung’s action-camera function for steadier footage while moving at high speed. Samsung’s support article describes the path as:
- Open the Camera app.
- Tap Video.
- Tap the SuperSteady icon, shown as a hand or stabilization symbol when the current mode supports it.
Once selected, hold the phone in the orientation you want and begin recording. SuperSteady is an optional shooting mode; it is not the same thing as enabling the phone’s physical OIS. If the icon does not appear, remain in Video mode and check the current lens, resolution and other settings before concluding that the phone lacks stabilization.
Finding ordinary Video stabilization
Some Galaxy Camera versions also expose a Video stabilization switch in Camera settings. Open Camera, enter Video, tap the settings gear and look for that label. Samsung does not present the control on every model or in every recording configuration. It applies electronic correction and may change the available field of view or resolution. Leave it off when you need the native framing and turn it on when software correction is more useful than the small crop it may require.

Choose the right stabilization mode
| Mode | Best use | What it changes | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal Video with OIS | Everyday handheld clips, conversations and panning when your phone has an OIS-equipped main camera. | Physical correction runs automatically; the normal field of view is preserved. | Only available on lenses and models with the hardware. It cannot remove large movements from running or rapid turns. |
| Video stabilization | Additional software correction when the Camera app provides the toggle. | Electronic processing shifts and commonly crops frames to smooth motion. | Availability depends on model, One UI version, lens and resolution; Samsung’s support material does not state one universal resolution or crop value. |
| SuperSteady | Walking, cycling or other fast movement in good light. | Uses a dedicated action-camera stabilization mode with stronger motion smoothing. | Supports QHD and FHD according to Samsung’s support article; it is incompatible with HDR10+, can reduce shutter speed, and may create noise in low light or banding under fluorescent lighting. |
Start with normal Video when you are standing still or moving gently. It keeps the usual composition and avoids SuperSteady’s low-light trade-offs. Select SuperSteady when motion is the main problem and there is enough light to maintain a clean exposure. If the app offers ordinary Video stabilization, compare the framing on a short test clip before an important recording.

QHD/FHD operation and HDR10+
Samsung’s support guidance, published or updated on March 14, 2023, states that SuperSteady operates in QHD and FHD modes. The same guidance notes that SuperSteady cannot be used with HDR10+. If you need HDR10+ capture, use a compatible normal Video configuration instead and accept the stabilization behavior that configuration provides.
Low light and fluorescent lighting
SuperSteady can reduce shutter speed. In a dim room or at night, that can lower detail, increase image noise and make moving subjects look blurred. Samsung also warns of possible banding under fluorescent lights. Add light, move closer to a brighter area or return to normal Video with OIS and/or the ordinary Video stabilization control when available.
Close subjects and the 0.6x lens
Samsung cautions that SuperSteady may produce blur at close distances or when the 0.6x ultra-wide view is selected. Its practical guideline is to leave about one metre between the camera and the subject. Treat that distance as Samsung’s shooting advice, not as a universal optical limit: the result also depends on lighting, subject motion and the particular phone.
If the subject fills the frame, switch to 1x and step back where possible. The 1x main camera is also the lens most likely to carry the OIS hardware listed in Samsung’s specifications.
Why video can still shake when stabilization is enabled
The selected lens has different hardware
OIS listed for the main camera does not guarantee OIS on the ultra-wide, telephoto or front camera. Changing from 1x to another lens can therefore change the physical stabilization available. Use the main lens when you need the OIS specified for your phone.

The movement exceeds what the mode can correct
OIS is designed for small hand tremor. SuperSteady is intended for more active movement, but it still cannot make running footage identical to a mechanically isolated camera. Keep both hands on the phone, bend your elbows and walk smoothly; for sustained action, a tripod or gimbal is more reliable than any in-app setting.
The current settings disable the control
Resolution, HDR10+, the chosen lens and other camera modes can hide SuperSteady or ordinary Video stabilization. Return to plain Video, select a supported lens and inspect the available resolution options. The icon or toggle may reappear only after an incompatible option is disabled.
Low light is disguising stabilization as shake
In darkness, a slower shutter can create motion blur even when stabilization is active. Add illumination or use normal Video with the main-camera OIS rather than judging SuperSteady from a dim test. Fluorescent banding is another lighting artifact specifically associated with Samsung’s SuperSteady warning.
Digital cropping changed your composition
Electronic stabilization and SuperSteady may crop the edges of the frame to create room for software correction. A tighter composition can make small movements look more obvious. Start with 1x, leave extra space around the subject and check the preview before recording a one-time event.
A reliable setup for a steadier clip
- Identify the exact model and regional variant in Settings → About phone. Confirm whether Samsung lists OIS for its main camera.
- Clean the camera glass and choose the 1x main lens if you want the documented main-camera OIS.
- Open Camera → Video. Decide whether normal Video, the ordinary Video stabilization toggle or SuperSteady matches the movement and light.
- For a normal handheld scene, leave the phone in Video and let OIS operate automatically. Enable Video stabilization only if its crop and framing suit the shot.
- For walking or rapid movement in daylight, tap the SuperSteady hand icon. Confirm that the desired QHD or FHD option remains available and that HDR10+ is not selected.
- Keep close subjects at least roughly one metre away when using SuperSteady, and prefer 1x over 0.6x if the ultra-wide image looks blurred.
- Record a short test. Inspect fine detail, moving edges, noise, framing and any fluorescent-light banding before filming the important sequence.
Troubleshooting checklist
- No SuperSteady icon: Switch explicitly to Video, then check resolution, lens and HDR10+ selections. Some combinations remove the control by design.
- Only a Video stabilization toggle appears: That is electronic stabilization, not a hidden OIS switch. Use it for software correction, while remembering that its availability and crop vary.
- SuperSteady footage is noisy: Increase the available light or return to normal Video with the main-camera OIS and any supported electronic stabilization.
- The frame is too tight: SuperSteady or EIS may crop the image. Step back, use 1x and leave extra space around the subject.
- The 0.6x image is blurry: Switch to 1x and increase the camera-to-subject distance, following Samsung’s approximately one-metre guideline.
- The phone has no OIS: No setting can create optical stabilization. Use electronic stabilization if offered, brace the phone on a tripod or use a gimbal.
- A control differs from an online tutorial: Check your One UI version, regional model, lens and resolution. Samsung changes labels and does not make every Camera Assistant feature available on every model.
What Camera Assistant can and cannot change
Camera Assistant can expose additional camera controls on supported Galaxy models, but Samsung explicitly notes that some features are unavailable on all models. It may make a compatible control easier to find; it cannot add an OIS mechanism, grant OIS to a lens that lacks it or override a mode’s hardware and resolution limits. Treat the controls actually shown by your phone as authoritative for that software build.
The practical answer for each common situation
- Handheld family video in normal light: Use normal Video on the OIS-equipped main camera. OIS is automatic and preserves the normal view.
- Walking outdoors: Try SuperSteady from Camera → Video → SuperSteady. Keep the subject away from the close-focus range and use 1x if 0.6x looks soft.
- Indoor or night recording: Prefer normal Video with main-camera OIS; add light rather than relying on SuperSteady in darkness.
- Fast movement under fluorescent lights: Test carefully. Samsung warns that SuperSteady can show banding, so normal Video may produce the more usable result.
- A Galaxy A model without OIS: Use electronic Video stabilization if available, stabilize the phone physically, or choose a model whose exact regional specification lists main-camera OIS.
The key check is always the same: identify the exact Galaxy variant, use the lens whose hardware is documented, then select the stabilization mode that fits the movement and light. OIS itself does not need to be enabled; SuperSteady is the separate on-screen control for more aggressive motion smoothing.
