Turn on DLSS Frame Generation in the game first. Then close the game, open NVIDIA app > Graphics > Program Settings, select the game, and change the appropriate option under Driver Settings. Use DLSS Override – Frame Generation Mode for the multiplier behavior (Use 3D app setting, Fixed, or Dynamic), and DLSS Override – Model Presets for the AI model choice. NVIDIA currently documents Preset C as a faster, beta-dependent option with a minor image-quality trade-off.
What you need before enabling DLSS Frame Generation
DLSS Frame Generation is not available on every GeForce RTX card or in every game. NVIDIA’s current support matrix lists the feature for GeForce RTX 40 Series and GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs. It does not list DLSS Frame Generation for RTX 20 or RTX 30 Series cards.

The game must also expose Frame Generation, and the NVIDIA app must offer the relevant override for that title. A compatible card alone cannot add support to a game that does not implement the feature.

Do not confuse a model preset with a frame-generation mode
NVIDIA’s menus contain two different kinds of controls that are often both called a preset.
- Frame Generation Mode controls how many generated frames are requested and whether that multiplier is automatic or fixed. The choices documented by NVIDIA are Use 3D app setting, Fixed, and Dynamic.
- Model Presets controls the AI model behavior. In the current beta guidance, you select Custom and then choose a value in the Frame Generation dropdown. NVIDIA documents Preset C as a faster option with a minor image-quality trade-off.
Changing the model preset does not select the multiplier, and changing Dynamic or Fixed does not select Preset C. Configure them separately.
NVIDIA describes DLSS 4.5 Multi Frame Generation as reaching up to 6X on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs: five additional generated frames for each natively rendered frame. That is an NVIDIA feature specification, not an independent benchmark, and the available multiplier depends on the game, GPU, driver, and app controls exposed on your system.
Enable DLSS Frame Generation in the game
- Start the supported game.
- Open its graphics, display, or video settings.
- Find the DLSS section and turn on DLSS Frame Generation. The exact location and wording vary by title.
- Apply the game’s settings and confirm that the feature is enabled.
- Exit the game completely before changing an NVIDIA app override.
This in-game step matters even when you intend to use an override. NVIDIA’s override workflow assumes that the program has Frame Generation enabled. If the game has no Frame Generation option, the NVIDIA app may not be able to add it through the override menu.
Apply an NVIDIA app override for one game
The current per-game workflow is:
- Exit the game to the desktop.
- Open the NVIDIA app.
- Open Graphics, then Program Settings.
- Select the supported game from the program list. If the title is not listed, use the app’s available program-selection controls; the override is only useful when the app recognizes the game.
- Scroll to Driver Settings.
- Open DLSS Override – Frame Generation Mode if you want to change the multiplier behavior.
- Open DLSS Override – Model Presets if you want to change the AI model preset.
- Click Apply.
- Reopen the game and test the result.
NVIDIA’s current guidance also documents global options for the Dynamic and Fixed controls. A per-game setting is the safer choice when different titles need different behavior; a global setting affects every compatible program to which the option applies.
Choose the Frame Generation Mode
Use DLSS Override – Frame Generation Mode to decide whether the game or the NVIDIA app controls the multiplier.
| Option | How it behaves | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use 3D app setting | Leaves the behavior to the game. NVIDIA identifies this as the way to retain ordinary 2X behavior controlled by the title. | You want the game’s integrated Frame Generation setting and predictable compatibility. | The game must support and enable Frame Generation. |
| Fixed | Uses a multiplier selected by you rather than changing it automatically. | You want a known, repeatable multiplier for a particular game or display. | The selected multiplier must be available for the title and hardware. |
| Dynamic | Adjusts the multiplier toward a display-refresh target or a custom frame-rate target. | You want the system to adapt instead of holding one multiplier. | NVIDIA says Dynamic mode is currently incompatible with frame-rate limiters and V-Sync. |
When to use Use 3D app setting
Select Use 3D app setting when you want the game to remain in charge. This is the documented path for ordinary 2X Frame Generation: enable the feature in the game and do not force a different multiplier in the NVIDIA app.
When to use Fixed
Choose Fixed when you want the same multiplier each time the game runs. Fixed is useful when you have already selected a refresh-rate or frame-rate target and do not want the app changing the multiplier during play. The exact choices shown in the dropdown can vary by game, GPU, and app version.

When to use Dynamic
Choose Dynamic when you want the app to adjust toward your monitor’s maximum refresh rate or toward a custom frame-rate target. Before using it, remove any frame-rate limiter and check V-Sync: NVIDIA’s exact warning is that “Dynamic mode is currently not compatible with frame rate limiters and V-Sync.” If you need either control, use Fixed or Use 3D app setting instead.
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is listed by NVIDIA only for RTX 50 Series in its current technology matrix. If Dynamic is absent on an RTX 40 Series system, that absence is consistent with the published matrix; it is not proof that the installation is broken.
Select a DLSS model preset
- With the game closed, return to NVIDIA app > Graphics > Program Settings.
- Select the game and scroll to Driver Settings.
- Open DLSS Override – Model Presets.
- Select Custom.
- Open the Frame Generation dropdown.
- Select the model preset you want, such as Preset C when it is available.
- Click Apply.
- Launch the game again.
What Preset C changes
NVIDIA’s October 2026 beta instructions describe Preset C as a faster Frame Generation mode with a minor image-quality trade-off. It is not established as a universally best setting: a faster model can be attractive when generation speed is the priority, while the default model may be preferable when preserving image quality matters more.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Preset C is tied to the beta NVIDIA app guidance cited by NVIDIA. Menu labels and availability can change between app builds and games, so do not assume every installation will show it. NVIDIA also says to reboot the system if Preset C does not appear after installing the applicable beta update.
NVIDIA has reported up to 35% faster performance on a GeForce RTX 5060 in its own stated test context for Preset C. Treat that as a vendor claim for that test setup, not a guaranteed gain in every game or on every RTX 50 Series card.
How to choose a practical configuration
You want the least surprising setup
Enable Frame Generation in the game, select Use 3D app setting, and leave the model preset at the game or driver default. This keeps the title’s native behavior in control and avoids Dynamic’s conflict with V-Sync and frame-rate limiters.
You want a known multiplier
Enable Frame Generation in the game, choose Fixed, and select the available multiplier that matches your target. Fixed is the better fit when consistency matters more than automatic adaptation.
You want automatic adaptation to a high-refresh display
Choose Dynamic and set the desired display-refresh or custom frame-rate target exposed by the app. Remove V-Sync and frame-rate limiters first, because NVIDIA currently lists both as incompatible with Dynamic mode.

You want the faster model path
Use DLSS Override – Model Presets > Custom > Frame Generation > Preset C only when the beta app exposes it and you accept the documented minor image-quality trade-off. The model choice is independent of whether the multiplier is Use 3D app setting, Fixed, or Dynamic.
Costs, compatibility, and upgrade expectations
The NVIDIA app is the free settings tool used to configure these options; the feature does not require buying a separate utility. A hardware purchase is relevant only if your current GPU is outside NVIDIA’s listed support range. NVIDIA’s matrix covers RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series for DLSS Frame Generation, while Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is listed for RTX 50 Series only.
A high-refresh-rate monitor is optional, not a prerequisite. It becomes useful when Dynamic is aimed at a higher display-refresh target, but you should still choose the mode based on the game, the target you can sustain, and whether you need V-Sync or a frame limiter. There is no universal preset that makes every title faster or clearer.

Troubleshoot missing or ineffective settings
There is no Frame Generation option in the game
- Confirm that the GPU is an RTX 40 or RTX 50 Series model listed by NVIDIA for DLSS Frame Generation.
- Check whether the specific game supports DLSS Frame Generation. The NVIDIA app cannot guarantee support for a title that does not implement the feature.
- Make sure you are looking in the game’s graphics or display settings; the wording and location differ by title.
The NVIDIA app has no override for the game
- Close the game before opening Program Settings.
- Verify that you selected the correct executable or game entry in Graphics > Program Settings.
- Check whether the title and your hardware expose the requested control. Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is listed only for RTX 50 Series in NVIDIA’s current matrix.
- If the title is not recognized by the app, use the game’s own Frame Generation setting rather than assuming a driver override is available.
Preset C is missing
- Confirm that you opened DLSS Override – Model Presets, selected Custom, and opened the Frame Generation dropdown. Preset C is not selected from the Frame Generation Mode menu.
- Check that you are using the beta NVIDIA app build associated with NVIDIA’s Preset C instructions.
- Reboot the system. NVIDIA specifically recommends a reboot when Preset C does not appear.
- If it remains unavailable, use the available model value or return to the game-controlled setting. NVIDIA does not document Preset C as universally available.
The game ignores the change
- Exit the game before applying the setting.
- Click Apply after changing the override.
- Relaunch the game; the override is not intended to be applied while the title is already running.
- Check whether a global setting is being overridden by a more specific per-game setting, or vice versa.
- For ordinary 2X behavior, select Use 3D app setting and enable Frame Generation inside the game.
Dynamic mode conflicts with your frame cap or V-Sync
This is an expected limitation, not necessarily a malfunction. NVIDIA states that Dynamic mode is currently incompatible with frame-rate limiters and V-Sync. Disable those controls if Dynamic is essential, or switch to Fixed or Use 3D app setting when you need them.
The image looks worse after selecting Preset C
Preset C is documented as faster with a minor image-quality trade-off. Return to the previously available model value, or select the game-controlled model behavior if the app provides it. Do not evaluate Preset C solely by its name; the intended choice is the balance between generation speed and image quality in your particular title.
A short decision path
- Is the GPU an RTX 40 or RTX 50 Series card? If not, NVIDIA’s current matrix does not list DLSS Frame Generation for it.
- Does the game provide Frame Generation? If yes, enable it in the game before touching the app override.
- Do you want the game to control ordinary 2X behavior? Select Use 3D app setting.
- Do you need a fixed multiplier? Select Fixed.
- Do you want automatic targeting of a display refresh rate or custom cap? Select Dynamic, but remove V-Sync and frame-rate limiters.
- Do you want to test the faster beta model? Select Custom under Model Presets, choose Preset C in the Frame Generation dropdown, apply the change, relaunch, and reboot if the option is missing.
What to verify after relaunching
- The game still reports DLSS Frame Generation as enabled.
- The NVIDIA app shows the intended per-game mode and model value under Driver Settings.
- Your display target is achievable without Dynamic conflicting with V-Sync or a limiter.
- Preset C is judged against the image-quality trade-off NVIDIA documents, rather than assumed to be the best choice for every game.
There is no single best preset for all systems. Hardware generation, game support, app build, display target, and your tolerance for image-quality trade-offs determine the right combination.

What is the difference between Fixed, Dynamic, and Use 3D app setting?
Use 3D app setting leaves ordinary 2X behavior to the game. Fixed uses a multiplier you select. Dynamic adjusts toward a display-refresh or custom frame-rate target, but NVIDIA says it is currently incompatible with V-Sync and frame-rate limiters.
Why don’t I see Preset C in the NVIDIA app?
Preset C is documented in NVIDIA’s beta app guidance. Open DLSS Override – Model Presets, select Custom, and check the Frame Generation dropdown. Verify the applicable beta build and reboot the system, which NVIDIA specifically recommends if the option is missing.
Is Preset C the best DLSS Frame Generation preset?
Not universally. NVIDIA describes Preset C as faster with a minor image-quality trade-off. Use it when generation speed is more important than preserving the default model’s image behavior, and compare it in the specific game you play.

NVIDIA currently says Dynamic mode is not compatible with frame-rate limiters or V-Sync. Disable those controls for Dynamic, or choose Fixed or Use 3D app setting instead.
Do I need a high-refresh monitor or new software to use Frame Generation?
A high-refresh monitor is optional, though it can make Dynamic’s refresh-rate targeting useful. The NVIDIA app is the settings utility; the essential requirements are a supported RTX 40 or RTX 50 Series GPU, a supported game, and an app build that exposes the control.
Why did my override not take effect?
Close the game before changing the setting, select the correct game entry, click Apply, and relaunch. Also check whether a per-game setting is overriding a global setting. For ordinary 2X behavior, use Use 3D app setting and enable Frame Generation in the game.
The Bottom Line
Enable Frame Generation in the game, then use the NVIDIA app’s per-game Driver Settings only if you need to change the multiplier or model. Choose Use 3D app setting for native 2X behavior, Fixed for a predictable multiplier, and Dynamic only when you can avoid V-Sync and frame-rate limiters. Preset C is a beta-dependent, faster model option—not a universal best choice—and is available only on supported games, app builds, and hardware.
