The current League of Legends spectator workflow is replay-first. After a match, download its replay from the End of Game screen or Match History, then select Watch Replay. Riot has replaced the old live-spectate shortcut on ranked leaderboards with a route to the player’s Match History and available replays. For professional games, use the official LoL Esports site or its mobile Esports section for live broadcasts and VODs.
What “Spectator Mode” means in the current League client
Older League of Legends guides often show an eye-shaped Spectate button beside players in ranked leaderboards. That advice is outdated for the current client. Riot’s Patch 25.23 notes say the ability to spectate live games directly from ranked leaderboards is being replaced with a shortcut to that player’s Match History and replays.

That change creates two different viewing paths:

An in-client replay is an interactive reconstruction of the game rather than a normal video file. You can change the camera and inspect the match from an observer-style view, but it is tied to the game version that produced it. An Esports VOD is a conventional video stream: it is easier to share and normally remains available longer, but it does not provide the same free camera and timeline controls as a client replay.

Method 1: Use the End of Game screen
- Finish a match and remain on the End of Game screen.
- Look in the upper-right area, beside Advanced Details.
- Select the download control. Riot’s support instructions specifically place the replay download button there.
- Wait for the download to finish. The client stores the match as a
.roflreplay file. - Select the same control again. Once the file is available, the control changes to Watch Replay.
- Choose Watch Replay to launch the replay in the League client.
If you leave the End of Game screen before downloading, the match is not lost immediately. It should still be listed in Match History while it remains within the client’s replay window.

Method 2: Download it from Match History
- Open the League client and select your profile.
- Open Match History.
- Find the match you want to review.
- Select its download control.
- After the download completes, select Watch Replay on that match.
The Match History route is useful when you want to review a game later, but it does not remove the replay’s age limit. The client exposes only the latest 20 games for replay purposes, and replay files last only for the length of the current patch cycle.
How to watch a friend’s ranked replay
Riot’s replay FAQ says ranked replays can be downloaded from the Match History tab of a friend’s profile. This is the supported replacement for many older “spectate a friend” instructions.
- Open your friend list in the League client.
- Select the friend whose match you want to inspect and open that player’s profile.
- Choose Match History.
- Locate the ranked match.
- Select the replay download control, if it is shown.
- When the control changes to Watch Replay, select it to launch the file.
This workflow is for a replay that has been published to the player’s Match History and is still valid for the current patch. It is not a guarantee that you can join every friend’s game while it is being played. If no download control appears, the match may be outside the available history, no replay may be offered for it, or the replay may no longer match the current game version.

Why the old live-spectate button disappeared
The missing eye icon is usually a client change rather than a problem with your installation. Riot’s Patch 25.23 notes explicitly describe ranked-leaderboard live spectating as being replaced by a shortcut to Match History and replays. Consequently, an article or video showing Live Spectate beside a ranked player can describe an older client state.
Opening a player’s Match History is now the practical first step. If a replay is available, download it and use Watch Replay. If you need an actually live view, the in-client ranked-leaderboard shortcut is no longer the dependable route; use an official broadcast when the match is part of a professional event.
Replay limits you need to plan around
Only the latest 20 games are exposed
Riot says the client makes replays available only for the latest 20 games. This is a rolling limit, not a permanent archive. Playing additional matches can push an older game out of the replay list even if you never opened it.

Replays expire when the patch changes
Replay files last for the length of the patch cycle. A replay created on an earlier patch may stop working after the next game update because the client’s game data and the replay’s recorded state no longer match. If a match matters for coaching, dispute documentation or personal review, download and watch it before patch day rather than assuming it will remain playable.

A .rofl file depends on the League client and the compatible game version. It is therefore different from a video that can be uploaded or played in a general media player. If you need a durable shareable copy, use the client’s Highlights recording feature while the replay is open.
Controls for reviewing a replay
The replay viewer is designed for analysis rather than passive playback. Riot documents several controls that make it easier to follow one champion or inspect a fight from a wider perspective.

Use the timeline to pause before an engagement, move back to identify the first positioning error, and then play forward to see how the decision affected the next few seconds. For a lane review, watch the same moment once from each side instead of assuming the first camera angle tells the whole story.
Chat, highlights and saving a useful clip
In-game chat is not included
Riot’s replay FAQ says replays show gameplay but do not include in-game chat. A replay can therefore reveal positioning, cooldown usage, ward placement and objective timing without reproducing the team’s written conversation.
Record a Highlight in .webm
The client can record selected moments as Highlights. These clips are saved in .webm format and can be shared as ordinary video files, unlike a client-dependent .rofl replay.
- Open the match replay and move the timeline to the moment you want to preserve.
- Pause or play through the sequence until the desired start point is clear.
- Use the client’s Highlight recording control to capture the selected moment.
- Stop the recording after the action ends and wait for the
.webmfile to finish saving. - Open the resulting video with a media player or attach it to a message like any other video file.
Record short, purposeful segments rather than an entire match. A clip showing the setup, the key action and its immediate result is easier for another player to understand than a long file with several unrelated events.

Use the official LoL Esports destination for live games
For professional competitions, the dependable general-purpose option is the official LoL Esports destination. It provides live broadcasts and a VOD library for completed matches. This route is separate from the ranked Match History system, so it remains useful when an in-client replay is unavailable or when you want a broadcast with casters and production graphics.
Find live streams and VODs in the mobile Esports section
Riot’s Riot Mobile documentation says the Esports section can be configured for favorite leagues and lets viewers tune in live for Esports drops or catch up on VODs of recent matches. In the app, open the Esports area, choose the leagues you follow, and use the live or VOD entry for the match. The exact navigation labels can change with app updates, but the distinction remains the same: live events are streams, while completed events are on-demand videos.

Riot’s Pro View FAQ historically described a more player-focused viewing experience. It required signing in to LoL Esports with a Riot Account and offered features such as real-time highlights plus live-match and VOD viewing. That FAQ does not establish that Pro View is available, supported or priced in 2026. Treat it as historical documentation, and check the current LoL Esports site for any present player-focused viewing option before relying on it.

Practical workflows for coaching and improvement
Review your own defeat
- Download the replay immediately from End of Game or Match History.
- Watch once without pausing to understand the overall flow.
- Watch again from your champion’s camera and mark the first avoidable death, missed recall or lost wave.
- Switch to the opposing champion at the same timestamps to see what information they had and which threat you failed to respect.
- Use a Highlight for one or two teachable moments that you can send to a coach or teammate.
Study a friend’s ranked game
- Open the friend’s profile and Match History.
- Download the ranked replay while the control is available.
- Review the game in short sections: lane setup, first objective, mid-game rotations and final team fights.
- Use champion-key camera selection to compare both sides before discussing a decision.
- Export only the moments that support a specific coaching point, because the original replay may expire with the patch.
Study a professional match
- Open the official LoL Esports destination and locate the live event or completed match.
- For a live game, use the stream; for a completed game, open its VOD.
- Pause the broadcast at draft-independent moments such as wave crashes, objective setups and resets.
- Use the broadcast’s player labels and minimap to note where information was gained or denied.
- If the event offers a player-focused viewing feature, verify its current availability on the Esports site rather than relying on older Pro View instructions.
