Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a browser or device signal that tells websites you want to opt out of data sale, sharing with third parties, and cross-context targeted advertising where applicable law gives you that right. It is not a tracker blocker and does not guarantee that every site will comply. Turn it on separately in each browser or device, then verify that the signal is being sent.
What GPC does—and what it does not do
When enabled, GPC communicates an opt-out preference to participating websites. The W3C specification describes it as a way to universally signal rights that otherwise require repeating choices on individual sites. The Global Privacy Control project says the signal can exercise legal opt-out rights under laws such as California’s Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), but the legal effect depends on your jurisdiction and the site’s obligations.

GPC does not erase existing data, close accounts, block cookies, stop fingerprinting, or prevent every form of tracking. Mozilla states that “GPC only sends a request signal. Some websites may still track you.” Microsoft similarly warns that websites may or may not honor the signal. Continue using tracker protection, cookie controls, account-level privacy settings and careful consent choices.

Enable GPC in Firefox
- Open Settings (called Preferences in some builds).
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to Website Privacy Preferences. Mozilla may label this area Additional protections.
- Check Tell websites not to sell or share my data.
- Close Settings. Firefox saves the change automatically.
Firefox can still send the request where a site is not legally required to honor it, and enabling the checkbox does not stop all tracking.

Enable GPC in Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge and select Settings and more (…), then Settings.
- Choose Privacy, search, and services.
- Under Privacy, find Global Privacy Control.
- Turn the setting on.
Microsoft says this control is currently available in the United States. Even when Edge sends the signal, an individual website may ignore it.
Enable GPC in Brave
Brave is listed by the GPC project as natively supporting GPC. Brave’s help material identifies the desktop and Android flag brave://flags/#brave-global-privacy-control-enabled. Open that address in Brave, enable the flag if it is present, and restart when prompted. Brave’s privacy settings may expose an equivalent control in newer releases, so check there first. Flags and labels can change; verify the result after restarting.

Enable GPC in the DuckDuckGo browser
The GPC project identifies the DuckDuckGo browser as natively supporting GPC and says it is on by default. Open the browser’s current privacy settings to confirm the control and then test from that device. A default setting can change with an app update, so do not assume that another device has the same state.

The official GPC user explainer directs Chrome users to an extension or add-on path rather than a native setting. In the official Chrome Web Store, choose a current extension whose listing explicitly says it sends the GPC or Sec-GPC signal.

- Check the publisher identity, permissions and recent maintenance information.
- Install the extension and approve only the permissions you understand.
- Use the extension’s control to enable GPC.
- Test the signal at globalprivacycontrol.org.
Do not treat any particular extension as permanently supported: store listings, permissions and compatibility can change.
Other Chromium browsers and Opera
There is no single current menu path that applies to every Chromium-derived browser. Open the browser’s privacy or site-settings area and search for “Global Privacy Control” or “privacy preference signal.” If no native control exists, use a reputable, maintained extension that explicitly supports GPC. Record the browser version and extension version for your own privacy inventory, then verify the outgoing signal.

What about Safari?
A stable, user-facing Safari GPC control could not be confirmed from authoritative Apple documentation available for this guide. Do not invent a Safari menu path or assume that another browser’s instructions work in Safari. Check Apple’s current Safari release or support documentation for your macOS or iOS version before enabling or recommending a control. Until an Apple-documented procedure is available, verify any claimed setting directly rather than relying on an extension or a third-party guide.

Verify that the signal is flying
- After changing a browser setting or extension, open globalprivacycontrol.org.
- Look for the site’s confirmation banner that the GPC flag is being sent.
- For a technical check, open browser developer tools, reload a page and inspect the request headers for
Sec-GPC: 1. - Where supported, run
navigator.globalPrivacyControlin the console and check whether it reports an enabled signal.
Repeat the test on every browser profile, phone, tablet and computer you use. Private-browsing profiles and managed work devices can have separate settings or policies.
Why enable it if sites can ignore it?
Without GPC, you must often repeat an opt-out on every participating site. With GPC enabled, one browser-level choice can communicate your preference automatically to sites that recognize the signal and are subject to the relevant legal rules. That makes GPC a useful baseline, not a complete privacy solution. Keep account opt-outs, cookie decisions and tracker blocking in place, and revisit them when a site says it cannot honor the signal.
