What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Open the repository on GitHub, select Settings, then Advanced Security (called Code security and analysis in some GitHub Enterprise Server interfaces). If the repository does not already have it, enable Secret Protection first. Then select Enable beside Push protection. Repository owners, organization owners, security managers, and users with the repository’s admin role can perform these changes.
Secret scanning looks for exposed credentials in repository content and creates alerts. Push protection works earlier in the workflow: it blocks supported secrets during a push and creates an alert when a contributor bypasses that block.

What secret scanning and push protection do
These controls address the same risk at different points in the software-delivery process. A credential committed to source code, configuration, documentation, or another tracked file can be copied by anyone who can read the repository and may allow access to cloud services, databases, build systems, or other infrastructure.

Secret scanning
Secret scanning examines repository content for credentials and other supported secret formats. When it finds a potential exposure, GitHub generates a security alert so the repository’s security team can investigate and rotate or revoke the credential. For public repositories, secret scanning runs automatically at no charge, and Secret Protection features are available.

Push protection
Push protection adds a preventive check at push time. GitHub describes the behavior this way: “With push protection, secret scanning blocks contributors from pushing secrets to a repository and generates an alert whenever a contributor bypasses the block.” In practical terms, a contributor receives a block when a supported secret is detected before the commit reaches the remote repository. If an authorized contributor uses an available bypass path, GitHub records an alert instead of silently allowing the event.
Check eligibility before changing the setting
The controls shown in repository settings depend on repository visibility, account ownership, and the organization’s GitHub entitlement. Confirm those conditions before troubleshooting a missing toggle.
| Repository or account context | Availability described by GitHub |
|---|---|
| Public repository | Secret scanning runs automatically for free, and Secret Protection features are available. |
| Organization-owned private repository | Requires GitHub Secret Protection on GitHub Team or GitHub Enterprise Cloud, or a GitHub Advanced Security entitlement. |
| Organization-owned internal repository | Requires GitHub Secret Protection on GitHub Team or GitHub Enterprise Cloud, or a GitHub Advanced Security entitlement. |
| User-owned repository | Additional Enterprise Managed Users or GitHub Enterprise Server requirements may apply. |
These are entitlement requirements, not a guarantee that every person who can view a repository can change its security settings. GitHub identifies repository owners, organization owners, security managers, and users with the repository’s admin role as eligible users for the configuration.
Enable Secret Protection and push protection
Use this procedure for a repository-level configuration. The labels can vary slightly between GitHub.com and GitHub Enterprise Server, but the sequence remains the same.
- Sign in to GitHub. Use an account that is a repository owner, organization owner, security manager, or has the repository’s admin role.
- Open the target repository. Confirm that you are changing the intended repository, particularly if several repositories have similar names.
- Open repository settings. Click Settings beneath the repository name. If the tab is hidden, open the repository dropdown and choose Settings.
- Open the security settings page. In the left sidebar, select Advanced Security. Some GitHub Enterprise Server versions label this page Code security and analysis.
- Enable Secret Protection if necessary. In the Secret Protection section, click Enable. Review the impact shown by GitHub and confirm with Enable Secret Protection when prompted.
- Turn on push protection. Return to the Secret Protection section and click Enable beside Push protection.
- Verify the resulting state. Confirm that the page shows Secret Protection enabled and that Push protection is enabled rather than offering the Enable control again.
Push protection is presented after Secret Protection in GitHub’s sequence. If you cannot find the Push protection control, do not assume the repository is unsupported until you have checked whether Secret Protection itself is enabled.

How to verify the configuration safely
Verification should prove that the setting is active without creating a real credential leak. Do not commit an actual API key, password, token, private key, or production credential as a test.
Use a normal, controlled push
Make a harmless repository change that follows your team’s normal review and push process. A documentation edit or another non-sensitive change confirms that ordinary pushes still work after the setting is enabled. The change should not contain a string that resembles a real secret, because secret detectors can block supported formats during a push.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check security alerts
After the controlled push, open the repository’s security alerts and confirm that the repository is reporting security information normally. The objective is to verify the configuration and alert visibility, not to manufacture a secret-scanning finding.
Test an actual block only through an approved process
If your organization requires a negative test, use a procedure approved by its security team and a value that cannot authenticate to anything. Coordinate the test before pushing it, because a detector may still create an alert and the event can become part of the repository’s security history. Never use a live service credential merely to demonstrate that push protection works.
Why the Push protection control may be missing
Secret Protection is not enabled
This is the first condition to check. GitHub places Push protection inside the Secret Protection section, so enable Secret Protection and reload the security page before looking for the second control.

The repository or account is not entitled
Public repositories receive automatic secret scanning and have Secret Protection availability. Organization-owned private and internal repositories need GitHub Secret Protection on GitHub Team or GitHub Enterprise Cloud, or a GitHub Advanced Security entitlement. User-owned repositories can have additional Enterprise Managed Users or Enterprise Server requirements. If the repository falls into one of these categories and the necessary entitlement is absent, a repository administrator may not be able to turn the feature on locally.
Your role is insufficient
Viewing code or opening repository settings does not necessarily grant permission to change security controls. Ask a repository owner, organization owner, security manager, or administrator to perform the change or confirm your role.
An organization or enterprise policy controls the repository
Organization and enterprise owners can apply security configurations at scale. A configuration delegated from above the repository can disable repository-level controls, leaving the local setting unavailable or read-only. In that situation, the organization or enterprise owner must adjust the inherited configuration; repeatedly refreshing the repository page will not override it.
The interface label differs
On some GitHub Enterprise Server versions, the sidebar item is Code security and analysis instead of Advanced Security. Look for the page that contains the Secret Protection section rather than relying only on the exact wording of the menu item.
Repository, organization, and enterprise scope
A repository-level switch is useful when one project needs protection immediately, but larger organizations often manage the same controls centrally. Organization or enterprise owners can apply security configurations across repositories. Central management helps maintain a consistent baseline and reduces the chance that a new repository is created without the required protection.

When local settings are appropriate
- A single repository needs protection before a broader rollout.
- The repository team owns its security configuration and no higher-level policy is enforcing a different state.
- You need to confirm the workflow on one project before requesting an organization-wide change.
When to involve an organization or enterprise owner
- The repository is private or internal and the entitlement is managed at organization level.
- The repository’s controls appear disabled by an inherited security configuration.
- Your team wants one policy applied consistently across many repositories.
- Push-protection bypasses require a defined approval or escalation process.
Before changing a centrally managed repository, identify whether the local setting is authoritative. A local administrator can have the correct repository role and still be unable to change a control delegated from above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand bypasses and exemptions
Push protection is intended to stop supported secrets before they are pushed, but GitHub can record an alert when a contributor bypasses the block. A bypass should be treated as an exception that needs an explanation, not as a routine way to get work merged.
GitHub warns that push-protection exemptions are designed for trusted automation that needs to push many commits with minimal friction. It also warns that exemptions may lead to leaked secrets and should be granted with caution. Limit exemptions to an identified automation or operational need, document who approved them, and review the resulting alerts.
Questions to answer before approving an exemption
- What process or automation is being blocked?
- Why can the process not remove or replace the detected value before the push?
- Is the value a real credential, a revoked credential, or a harmless test string?
- Who owns the affected service and can rotate the credential if necessary?
- How will the exemption and any resulting alert be reviewed?
Do not treat an exemption as evidence that the detected value is safe. If the value is real, remove it from the code and rotate or revoke it through the service that issued it.

Keep credentials out of tracked files
Push protection reduces the chance of publishing a supported secret, but it is not a substitute for sound credential handling. Store runtime credentials in the secret-management system approved by your organization, inject them through the deployment environment, and keep them out of source files, examples, documentation, and generated artifacts.
Best Value
Respond to a blocked push
- Read the push-protection message and identify the file, commit, or value that triggered detection.
- Determine whether the value is a real credential. Treat uncertainty as a possible exposure until the owning service confirms otherwise.
- Remove the value from the change and replace it with the approved configuration or secret reference.
- If the value was ever valid or may have been exposed elsewhere, revoke or rotate it with the issuing service.
- Push the corrected change and review the repository’s security alerts for any related event.
Deleting a value from the latest working-tree version is not always enough if it remains in earlier commits. Follow your organization’s approved history-cleanup and credential-rotation procedure when a real secret has entered version control.
Respond to a bypass alert
A bypass alert means a contributor proceeded after push protection detected a supported secret. Review the reason, inspect the affected commit, and determine whether the value needs revocation or removal. Record the decision so future reviewers can distinguish an approved automation exception from an accidental leak.
Common questions about availability
Does secret scanning work on private repositories?
It can, but the availability described by GitHub depends on ownership and entitlement. Organization-owned private repositories require GitHub Secret Protection on GitHub Team or GitHub Enterprise Cloud, or a GitHub Advanced Security entitlement. User-owned repositories have additional Enterprise Managed Users or Enterprise Server requirements. Public repositories have automatic secret scanning for free.
Is push protection the same as secret scanning?
No. Secret scanning detects secrets in repository content and creates alerts. Push protection performs a check during the push and blocks supported secrets before they arrive in the remote repository, while also generating an alert if a contributor bypasses the block.
Can any repository contributor enable it?
GitHub lists repository owners, organization owners, security managers, and users with the repository’s admin role as eligible users. A contributor without one of those permissions should ask an eligible administrator to make the change.
Why do I see “Code security and analysis” instead of “Advanced Security”?
Some GitHub Enterprise Server interfaces use Code security and analysis for the sidebar page that contains these controls. Open that page and look for Secret Protection.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Open the correct repository and enter Settings.
- Open Advanced Security, or Code security and analysis on applicable GitHub Enterprise Server versions.
