Enable Font Providers is a Windows administrative policy, not a switch on the usual Fonts settings page. On supported Windows 10 editions (version 1703 and later), enable it through Local Group Policy, the registry, or device management. When allowed, Windows may contact Microsoft’s online font provider at fs.microsoft.com and download font data when supported components need it.
This policy is separate from installing a .ttf or .otf file, adding supplemental language fonts, or downloading fonts for a web page.
Before you enable the policy
- Microsoft lists Windows 10 version 1703 and later, Pro, Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and IoT Enterprise LTSC for this policy.
- You need administrative control for a machine-wide Group Policy or registry change. A managed computer may replace a local setting during policy refresh.
- Allowing the policy can permit network traffic to Microsoft’s font-provider infrastructure. Leave it disabled on offline, hardened, kiosk, or local-font-only systems where that traffic is not permitted.
Microsoft’s policy documentation describes the setting and supported editions in System Policy CSP: AllowFontProviders.
Enable Font Providers with Local Group Policy
- Press Windows key + R, type
gpedit.msc, and press Enter. - Go to Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Network → Fonts.
- Open Enable Font Providers. If your template layout differs, search Group Policy Editor for that policy name.
- Select Enabled, then choose Apply and OK.
- Restart Windows. Microsoft also documents stopping and restarting the FontCache service as an alternative.
The underlying policy name is EnableFontProviders. Windows may periodically query the provider and retrieve data when needed; enabling the policy does not guarantee that every missing font will be downloaded.

Enable it with the registry
Use this method when Group Policy Editor is unavailable and you are authorized to change machine-wide policy.
- Back up the relevant registry key and open Command Prompt (Admin) or another elevated shell.
- Run:
reg add "HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsSystem" /v EnableFontProviders /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f- Restart Windows, or restart the FontCache service, and then reopen the affected application.
The policy value is 1 for allowed and 0 for disabled. On a domain-managed device, Group Policy or MDM can overwrite this value; Microsoft states that Group Policy takes precedence when both management methods configure the setting.
Undo the registry change
To explicitly block provider access, run:
reg add "HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsSystem" /v EnableFontProviders /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /fTo remove the locally created policy and return control to default or centrally managed behavior, run:
reg delete "HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsSystem" /v EnableFontProviders /fConfigure it through MDM or Intune

./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/System/AllowFontProviders- Create or edit a Windows policy profile in your organization’s MDM platform.
- Set
AllowFontProvidersto integer1(allowed). - Sync the device.
- Restart Windows or the FontCache service if the application does not recognize the change.
The CSP uses 0 for disabled and 1 for allowed. This is device-wide, not a per-user setting. Use your organization’s current management-console labels rather than assuming a particular Intune interface.
Verify the setting and diagnose failures
- Confirm that the registry value under
HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsSystemis1. - Restart Windows or FontCache, then close and reopen the application that needs the font.
- On a managed PC, generate a policy report with
gpresult /h "%USERPROFILE%Desktopgpresult.html"and inspect it for Enable Font Providers. - Check that the device is online and that Windows Update, proxy, firewall, and Microsoft-service access are not restricted.
- Remember that the required font may not be in the provider catalog, or the application may not support downloadable fonts.
This policy does not directly control browsers’ web-font downloads; Microsoft describes it as a setting for lower-level Windows text-display and font-handling components.
If you only need to install a font file
For a normal .ttf or .otf file, use Settings → Personalization → Fonts, or open the file and choose Install. Microsoft also supports fonts delivered through the Microsoft Store. See Manage Fonts in Windows.
Supported Windows 10 builds can install a font for the current user without elevation; Install for all users requires administrator privileges. This changes installed fonts, not the Font Providers policy.

If a language or script font is missing
For Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Thai, or another supplemental set, install the relevant Windows feature instead of relying only on provider access.
- On Windows 10 22H2, open Settings → System → Optional features.
- Select Add a feature, choose the required supplemental font package, and select Add.
- On older releases, the path may be Settings → Apps → Apps & features → Optional features.
- Keep the device online so Windows Update can obtain the package.

In Group Policy, open Enable Font Providers, select Disabled, apply the change, and restart Windows or FontCache. The equivalent registry command is:
reg add "HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsSystem" /v EnableFontProviders /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /fWith the policy disabled, supported Windows components use locally installed fonts and do not contact the documented provider for this function.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Enable Font Providers the same as installing a font?
No. It permits Windows’ supported online provider mechanism to obtain font data when needed. Install individual .ttf or .otf files from Settings → Personalization → Fonts.
Does this policy control fonts in Chrome or Edge web pages?
No. Microsoft says the setting does not directly affect browsers downloading web fonts for web content.
Why did my registry setting revert?
A domain Group Policy or MDM profile can overwrite local registry policy. Check the generated gpresult report or ask the device administrator.
Do I need to restart Windows?
Microsoft documents a reboot after policy changes; restarting the FontCache service is an alternative. Reopen applications afterward.

Can the policy download every available font?
No. Windows may retrieve data when supported components need it, and downloads still depend on catalog availability, connectivity, policy restrictions, and application support.
