You can’t enable Dolby Atmos for the Formula 1 stream described in Apple’s 2026 launch materials: Apple and Formula 1 list the broadcasts as 5.1 surround sound with 4K Dolby Vision, not Atmos. Dolby Vision describes the picture, not the soundtrack. Apple TV 4K can play Atmos from content that includes an Atmos mix, but a setting or compatible sound system cannot turn F1’s documented 5.1 source into one.
What audio format does Formula 1 use on Apple TV?
For 2026 U.S. coverage, Apple says every Grand Prix will be available in 5.1 surround sound and 4K Dolby Vision; Formula 1’s own announcement confirms those formats. Neither announcement identifies the F1 broadcast as Dolby Atmos. See Apple’s 2026 announcement and Formula 1’s announcement.

Atmos availability depends on both the program’s audio mix and the playback setup. Apple TV 4K supports Atmos for compatible content and equipment, but choosing Atmos in settings does not add channels or an object-based mix that the source does not provide.
How to set up Apple TV 4K for Atmos on supported content
These steps configure your system for programs that actually offer Dolby Atmos; they do not change Formula 1’s documented 5.1 format.

- Connect Apple TV 4K by HDMI directly to a Dolby Atmos-compatible soundbar or AV receiver, then connect that device to the television. Apple says most TVs do not support Atmos pass-through to external audio equipment, and its high-bandwidth Atmos implementation does not work over ARC. See Apple’s setup and connection guidance.
- On Apple TV 4K, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format. Check whether Dolby Atmos is available under Immersive Audio and enabled. Options depend on the connected television or receiver; if Atmos is missing, Apple says the home entertainment setup may need to change. See Apple’s guide and Apple TV audio-format settings.
- Play content that offers Atmos and check its audio information for the Dolby Atmos icon. Don’t use the receiver’s Atmos indicator alone as proof: Apple notes that Dolby MAT can make some older receivers display an Atmos indicator while stereo or multichannel audio is playing.
What audio options can you change during an F1 event?
In the Apple TV app, open the Formula 1 screen, select an event, and show the playback controls. Apple documents event-level options for changing the broadcast language or reducing loud sounds; it does not list an Atmos toggle. These controls change the selected track or loudness behavior, not the stream’s advertised channel format. The steps and availability are in Apple’s F1 event audio guide.

The 2026 format claim above concerns Apple’s announced U.S. Formula 1 coverage. Apple’s support guide describes the F1 screen as available to Apple TV subscribers in the United States; some events may be promotional, while full access to events, shows, and features requires a subscription. Apple also says F1 TV Premium remains available in the U.S. through Apple TV and is included for Apple TV subscribers. Rights and access vary by region. Apple or Formula 1 could change or add formats later, so the documented 5.1 description should not be read as a guarantee about every future feed or event.
