You can also open Control Center, touch and hold the brightness control, and tap Dark Mode. This changes the iPhone’s appearance, but Apple does not claim that it forces every website to provide a dark theme.
If a page remains bright, use Safari Reader when the site supports it, or turn on Smart Invert as a screen-wide workaround. The right choice depends on whether you want to preserve the complete page layout or simply make text easier to read.

Turn on the iPhone’s built-in Dark Mode
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Under Appearance, tap Dark.
Dark Mode changes supported parts of iOS and apps that honor the system appearance. It is an appearance setting, not a command that rewrites every website’s CSS. A site with its own light-only design may still display a white background in Safari.
Toggle Dark Mode from Control Center
- Open Control Center by swiping down from the upper-right corner of the screen.
- Touch and hold the brightness bar.
- Tap Dark Mode to switch it on or off.
This is the quickest method when you want to test a page in both appearances without leaving Safari.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Schedule Dark Mode
- Go to Settings > Display & Brightness.
- Turn on Automatic.
- Tap Options to review or adjust the schedule.
Scheduling controls the iPhone’s appearance. It does not guarantee that every site will follow the schedule.
When a website stays light
There are two Apple-provided alternatives. Safari Reader changes the page into a simplified reading view; Smart Invert changes display colors at the system level. Neither is a universal website theme switch.
Option 1: Use Safari Reader
On a supported article, open Safari’s Page Menu and tap Show Reader. Reader strips the page down to relevant text and images, removing much of the original layout and interactive furniture. It is useful for reading, but it is not the same as applying a dark stylesheet to the full webpage.
To make Reader automatic for the current site:
- Open the page in Safari.
- Tap the Page Menu.
- Open the page’s Website Settings.
- Turn on Use Reader Automatically.
For a broader Safari setting, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Reader and turn on All Websites for supported pages. Reader availability depends on the site, so a page may not show the Reader control at all.

Option 2: Turn on Smart Invert
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
- Turn on Smart Invert.
Apple describes Smart Invert this way: “Smart Invert reverses the colors of the display, except for images.” That makes it useful for sites that do not support Dark Mode, while leaving images treated differently from surrounding colors.
Smart Invert affects the display beyond the current webpage. Menus, other apps and system screens can also change appearance. If you need every onscreen color—including images—reversed, Classic Invert is available in the same Display & Text Size area, but it produces a more drastic result.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Scope | Page compatibility | Visual side effects |
|---|---|---|---|
| System Dark Mode | iPhone and apps that support the system appearance | Website-dependent; it does not force every site dark | Usually preserves the site’s normal layout and colors when the site supports Dark Mode |
| Safari Reader | One supported page or configured Safari sites | Only pages where Safari offers Reader | Simplifies the page and removes much of the original design |
| Smart Invert | The display system-wide | Can help on sites without a Dark Mode setting | Reverses display colors while treating images differently; affects other apps and screens |
| Classic Invert | The display system-wide | Works as a broad color inversion | Reverses all onscreen colors, including images |
A practical decision guide
- Want the normal website layout? Start with system Dark Mode. If the site remains light, Smart Invert is the closest built-in whole-page workaround.
- Want distraction-free reading? Try Safari Reader. It is often more comfortable for long articles, but it will not preserve the complete page design.
- Need colors changed everywhere on the phone? Smart Invert applies beyond Safari. Use Classic Invert only when reversing images and all other colors is acceptable.
- Need an automatic routine? Use the Dark Mode schedule under Display & Brightness, or configure Reader’s automatic setting for supported Safari pages.
What to expect from each approach
Dark Mode does not redesign a light-only site
A website must provide a dark theme or otherwise respond to the browser and operating-system appearance for system Dark Mode to change its page colors. Apple’s iPhone instructions cover the device toggle, Control Center and scheduling; they do not promise that all websites will render dark pages. If the page remains white after you select Dark, that behavior is normal rather than evidence that the iPhone setting failed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Reader is a reading view, not a page filter
Reader can remove navigation, advertisements, sidebars and other layout elements as it builds a simplified article view. That is why it can look darker or less cluttered without actually changing the site’s original theme. Because support is conditional, the absence of Show Reader means Safari is not offering Reader for that page.
Smart Invert changes the context around the page
Smart Invert is appropriate when preserving the page’s existence is more important than preserving its original colors. It can alter controls, logos and non-image artwork, and the same inversion remains active when you leave Safari. Turn it off from Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size when you are finished.

Troubleshooting
Dark Mode is on, but Safari is still bright
Check whether the site itself offers a theme control. If it does not, try Safari Reader for an article or Smart Invert for the full display. System Dark Mode alone cannot force a light-only website to change.
There is no “Show Reader” command
Reader is conditional. Try another article page on the same site, but do not expect Reader on every page. If Safari still does not offer it, use system Dark Mode or Smart Invert instead.

Tap the Page Menu and choose Hide Reader to return to the complete webpage. Reader intentionally presents a simplified view, so interactive controls and the site’s original layout may not appear.
Smart Invert makes images look wrong
Smart Invert is documented to reverse display colors except for images. If you need images inverted too, Classic Invert reverses all onscreen colors, but it will affect the rest of the phone as well.
The whole phone changed color unexpectedly
That is expected when Smart Invert or Classic Invert is enabled. Return to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and switch off the inversion setting you enabled.

Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to produce a dark-mode screenshot of a webpage for documentation, visual review or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo can render the page without configuring an iPhone browser. Its dark-mode option, device presets, custom viewports and retina scale let you request the appearance and dimensions you need.
ScreenshotNeo is also designed for clean captures: it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Here is a one-request capture of Stripe with the dark-mode option. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all parameters.

Capture options that matter for dark-page work
- Page shape: full-page capture loads lazy images; you can capture one element by CSS selector, choose a device preset or set any viewport.
- Rendering: set retina scale, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, custom CSS or JavaScript, and a click before capture.
- Timing: wait for a selector, a fixed delay or network idle. Hide selectors when a page element should not appear.
- Network and identity: block ads, trackers, requests or resource types; provide custom headers, cookies, a user agent or Authorization; set timezone and geolocation.
- Delivery: choose PNG, JPEG or WebP output, use a cache with a TTL you choose, create signed links for public image tags, submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call, or use the usage API and OpenAPI specification.
ScreenshotNeo accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify a migration. It is the first option to try when you need automated screenshots because it produces clean shots, bills only clean shots, and its lowest paid plan is $5.
