How to Enable Dark Mode on Google Sites (What You Can Actually Change)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Sites does not document a built-in light/dark switch for site visitors. The supported way to create a dark appearance is to make a custom theme, choose a dark palette, check contrast, and publish the changes. That produces a fixed dark design; it does not automatically follow each visitor’s device preference. A Chrome extension can darken the Google Sites editor, but its listing says the published site is unchanged.

What “dark mode” means in Google Sites

There are three different things people call dark mode:

  • Dark editor: the Google Sites editing workspace appears darker for the person building the site.
  • Dark published design: visitors see a site whose backgrounds, text, links, buttons, and navigation use dark colors selected by the site owner.
  • Visitor-controlled toggle: a light/dark control that visitors switch themselves, or that changes automatically according to their operating-system preference.

Google’s documented Google Sites workflow covers custom themes and color choices for the published design. It does not describe a native visitor-facing toggle or automatic detection of a visitor’s light/dark preference. Treat those as separate requirements rather than assuming that a dark theme provides them.

  1. Open the site in Google Sites. Go to the site’s editor, not merely the published URL.
  2. Open Themes. In the right-hand panel, select Themes.
  3. Create a custom theme. In the Custom area, choose Create theme, enter a name, and continue.
  4. Choose a starting palette. Select the palette closest to the look you want. A dark neutral background with a restrained accent color is usually easier to read than pure black paired with saturated text.
  5. Customize the colors. Select Customize colors and set the colors used by the site’s visual elements. Work through the available background, text, link, button, and navigation choices instead of changing only the page background.
  6. Choose fonts and finish the theme. Keep body text large enough and use a typeface with clear letter shapes. Complete the custom-theme flow so the theme becomes available to the site.
  7. Inspect every page. Check headings, paragraphs, links, buttons, embedded content, image captions, menus, and footer text. Look for text that disappears against the new background or links that are difficult to distinguish.
  8. Publish the design. Select Publish after the theme and color changes are ready. Editing the theme changes the draft; publishing is what updates the live site.

The result is a fixed dark visual design. The documented steps do not turn it into a preference-sensitive switch, and they do not provide a separate light version that visitors can select.

Designing a dark theme that remains readable

Use contrast deliberately

Dark backgrounds can make low-contrast gray text, thin fonts, and muted links hard to read. Review normal body text separately from large headings, navigation labels, buttons, and form-like elements. Do not judge only the editor preview: open the published URL in a fresh browser tab and check it at the zoom level your audience is likely to use.

Reserve bright colors for actions

A single accent color for links and primary buttons gives visitors a visual cue. If every heading, border, and icon is bright, the page becomes tiring and important actions no longer stand out. Check visited-link styling as well, because a dark purple or gray visited state may blend into the background.

Check images and embeds

Photos, logos, videos, and third-party embeds keep their own colors. A dark page can therefore contain a very bright white embedded document or an image whose subject disappears into a similar background. Add captions or surrounding text where the image alone does not provide enough context.

Review navigation and mobile layouts

Inspect the navigation menu in both its expanded and compact forms. A color that looks acceptable in the desktop header may be difficult to see in a mobile menu. Publish a revision and test the live page on a phone or a narrow browser window before treating the design as finished.

Can visitors switch between light and dark?

Not through the documented Google Sites theme controls. Those controls let the owner select a theme and publish its colors; they do not document a visitor-operated toggle or a setting that reads prefers-color-scheme. Do not promise visitors an automatic switch based solely on creating a dark custom theme.

If a two-mode experience is essential, you would need a separately supported implementation outside the documented theme workflow. Google Sites’ standard editor does not provide a documented control for adding a site-wide JavaScript preference switch. An extension that changes the editor is not a substitute: the Chrome Web Store listing for “Google Sites Dark & Light Mode Themes by SitesBuddy” says it affects the editor interface and does not affect the published site. Extension listings can change, so verify the current listing before installing anything.

Dark editor versus dark published site

Approach Where the change appears Who sees it What it provides
Custom Google Sites theme The published site after you publish Site visitors and the editor viewing the live site A fixed palette and typography chosen by the owner
Editor dark/light extension The Google Sites editing interface The person using the extension in that browser A claimed darker editor; the listing says the published site is unaffected
Visitor-controlled toggle The published site Each visitor according to a control or preference Not described in the official Google Sites theme instructions reviewed

Why your dark changes may not appear

You changed the draft but did not publish

Google Sites separates editing from publishing. Return to the editor, confirm the custom theme is selected, choose Publish, and then load the live URL in a private window.

Only some elements changed

A custom theme controls the site properties exposed by Google Sites, but embedded documents, videos, images, and other external content can retain their own styling. Inspect the embed itself and its provider’s settings rather than expecting the Sites palette to recolor it.

The editor is dark but the site is not

That is consistent with an editor-only extension. Disable the extension or test in a browser profile without it, then use a published custom theme if visitors need to see a dark design.

Text or links became hard to read

Return to Themes, open the custom theme, and adjust the specific text, link, button, or navigation colors. Recheck all page types after each change; fixing one page can expose a problem on another.

How to verify the result before sharing it

  • Open the published URL while signed out or in a private window.
  • Check the home page and at least one page containing links, buttons, images, and embeds.
  • Use keyboard navigation to confirm focus indicators remain visible against the dark background.
  • Zoom the browser and narrow the window to check wrapping, menus, and buttons.
  • View the site on a phone and a desktop display; brightness and screen coating can change how dark colors appear.
  • Ask someone unfamiliar with the design to find a link and the main call to action. If they cannot identify either quickly, adjust the palette.

Or skip the browser setup

If your actual goal is to capture a clean image or PDF of the dark published page, ScreenshotNeo can do that with one request after you publish the site. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it does not change Google Sites’ theme behavior, but it can automate the capture step.

cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://your-site.example -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://your-site.example"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://your-site.example' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Replace the example URL with your published Google Sites address. The ScreenshotNeo documentation lists the request options and response details. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get started.

ScreenshotNeo plans

Plan Allowance Price
Free 1,000 shots/month No card required
Starter 3,000 shots $5
Growth 15,000 shots $15
Pro 60,000 shots $39
Scale 250,000 shots $99
Business 1,000,000 shots $249

Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is included on every plan. Options include full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and margin controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, selector hiding, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL-based caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.

Bottom line for Google Sites dark mode

Use Themes → Custom → Create theme to build and publish a dark-looking Google Sites design. That is the documented route for changing the live site’s appearance. It is not a documented visitor-controlled or automatic device-preference switch, and an editor-darkening extension does not change what visitors see.
