This changes Edge’s menus, tabs, toolbar and other browser surfaces. It does not force every website to use dark colors, so pages with no dark theme may remain white.
What Edge’s dark mode actually changes
Microsoft Edge has a built-in dark theme for the browser interface. When you select it, Edge replaces its bright default interface with darker colors across areas such as the title bar, tabs, toolbar, menus, Settings pages and other browser-controlled surfaces. Microsoft describes the purpose of the dark theme as making the default bright background in the new Edge darker, which can be easier on the eyes in low-light environments or preferable for people who want a less bright interface.

The important boundary is that Edge controls its own interface, while each website controls the content it sends to the browser. A site may provide its own dark theme, respond to a device preference, or offer no dark styling at all. Therefore, enabling Edge’s theme can leave an article, shopping page, web app or search result with a white background. That behavior is normal and does not mean the browser setting failed.
Turn on Edge’s built-in dark theme
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner of the window.
- Select Settings.
- In the Settings sidebar, select Appearance.
- Find Overall appearance and select Dark.
The interface should change immediately. If you do not see the change, confirm that you selected Dark under Overall appearance, rather than changing a separate theme, wallpaper or extension option. Closing and reopening Edge is normally unnecessary for this official setting, although restarting the browser is a harmless troubleshooting step if parts of the interface still look unchanged.

Why some webpages stay white
Edge’s native dark theme is not a universal page recoloring system. Web developers decide how a page’s background, text, buttons, images, forms and embedded components are styled. A site that has not built a dark theme can continue to display a light page even while Edge’s controls are dark.
There are several common cases:
- The browser is dark but the site has no dark design. This is the most common explanation. The page is following its own light color rules.
- The site has a separate dark-mode control. Some sites expose a moon icon, a theme menu or an account preference. That control must be enabled inside the site.
- Only part of the page changes. A site may support dark colors for its main content but leave advertisements, embedded documents, images or third-party widgets unchanged.
- A web app uses fixed colors. Business dashboards and older web applications can specify bright backgrounds that ignore browser-level preferences.
There is no authoritative statistic in the available evidence showing how many Edge users prefer dark mode, nor is there a reliable general percentage for eye-strain reduction or performance gains. Treat dark mode as a comfort and preference feature, not as a guaranteed medical or battery-saving solution.
Choose the right method for the result you want
| Method | Scope | Stability | Control | Compatibility considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Edge Overall appearance > Dark | Edge’s interface | Official, stable setting | Browser-wide; no individual page rules | Webpage colors are unchanged unless the site supports its own dark theme |
| Dark-mode extension, such as Dark Reader | One site, groups of sites or most pages, depending on its rules | Extension behavior can change with updates | Per-site allow, block and appearance controls | Inverted or transformed colors can affect images, icons, forms and embedded content |
| Experimental web-content dark-mode flag | Broadly targets website content | Experimental and version-dependent | Usually a single browser flag rather than detailed site rules | May create unwanted colors or interfere with pages that already have a theme |
| Edge Canary Web Remix preview | Can transform an individual page, including a dark-mode conversion | Preview feature; availability and behavior can change | Page-level controls in the preview experience | Automatic conversion was reported as imperfect, so layouts and colors may not match the site’s design |
Use the official theme when your goal is a darker browser frame. Use a site-aware extension when only a few websites need help. Consider the flag only when you accept experimental behavior across many pages. Web Remix belongs in the preview category, not in instructions that assume every standard Edge release has it.

Make a single white website dark with an extension
Microsoft Q&A guidance recommends a dark-mode extension such as Dark Reader when a website does not provide its own dark theme. An extension operates on page content rather than only on Edge’s chrome, so it can change backgrounds and text on sites that remain light.

- Install a reputable dark-mode extension from the Microsoft Edge extension catalog.
- Open the extension’s toolbar menu on the website that remains light.
- Enable the extension for that site.
- Use its site list or allow/block controls to decide which domains are transformed.
- Check the page at normal zoom and interact with key controls, including menus, forms, dialogs and links.
The exact labels and controls depend on the extension version. The useful distinction is whether the extension is enabled for the current site, all sites or a custom list. Per-site rules are usually the safest starting point: leave complex web apps or pages with their own good dark theme untouched, while applying the transformation only to light pages you read regularly.
Check the parts that often break
- Images and video: A dark filter can make photographs, logos or video thumbnails look unnatural. Many extensions provide an image or media handling option; disable transformation for a site if the result is worse.
- Icons and logos: An icon designed for a white background can disappear or become too low-contrast after recoloring.
- Forms and buttons: Verify that placeholder text, selected states, drop-down menus and error messages remain readable.
- Embedded documents and frames: Content supplied by another service may keep its original colors or respond differently from the surrounding page.
If a site becomes difficult to use, turn the extension off for that domain instead of abandoning Edge’s built-in dark interface. A browser-interface theme and a page-content extension are independent settings, so you can keep Edge dark while allowing selected sites to remain in their original design.
Try Edge’s experimental web-content dark mode
Some Edge versions have exposed an experimental setting through the internal edge://flags page. The feature name and wording can vary by release, so search the flags page for a dark-mode option related to web content rather than relying on one permanent label.

edge://flagsin Edge’s address bar and press Enter. - Use the page’s search box to look for the web-content dark-mode feature.
- Change the feature from its default state to Enabled, if it is present.
- Select the restart or relaunch control shown by Edge.
- Test several sites, including a page that already offers a dark theme and a page that does not.
This route is not equivalent to the official Overall appearance > Dark setting. Flags are test controls, and Microsoft can rename, remove or alter them. A web-content dark-mode flag may apply broadly to websites, which means it can recolor pages that already have carefully designed themes. It can also produce odd combinations of background, text, border and image colors.

How to recover from unwanted flag behavior
- Return to
edge://flagsand set the dark-mode web-content feature back to Default or Disabled, depending on the choices shown. - Use Edge’s relaunch control to restart the browser.
- Test the affected page again before changing other flags.
- If only one site is problematic, use an extension with a per-site exclusion instead of a browser-wide experimental setting.
Do not treat a flag that appears in one Edge build as a guaranteed feature in another. The presence, name and result can differ by version, channel and update.
What Web Remix in Edge Canary means
A Windows Central report dated 13 July 2026 described Web Remix in Edge Canary as a preview that could toggle a page into dark mode and apply other visual transformations. Canary is a testing channel, and preview behavior can change before a feature reaches a broader release—or the feature may not ship in the same form.
The report also emphasized that automatic conversion was imperfect. In practice, a preview transformation may misread a site’s color hierarchy, leave some components bright, or make images and controls look unlike the original design. Use it only if you are comfortable with experimental software and can switch back when a page becomes less readable. It should not be presented as a stable dark-mode switch available to every Edge user.

The browser is dark, but one site is white
That is expected when the site has no dark theme. Look for a theme control within the site. If none exists, apply a dark-mode extension to that domain and inspect forms, images and embedded content before deciding to keep it enabled.
A page looks strange after enabling a flag
Disable or reset the web-content flag at edge://flags, relaunch Edge and test again. Experimental recoloring can conflict with a site’s existing styles, so a site-specific extension rule is usually easier to control.
Only some components remain bright
Those elements may come from an embedded service, a fixed-color component or an image rather than the page’s main stylesheet. Try the extension’s site-specific settings, but preserve the original design if changing the component reduces contrast or makes information harder to interpret.
Text or controls lose contrast
Turn off the transformation for that site and return to the site’s native theme, if available. Dark is not automatically more readable: contrast, focus indicators, link visibility and form states still matter.
Which approach should you use?
- Only the browser frame should be dark: Choose Edge’s official Dark appearance setting.
- One or two reading sites stay white: Use an extension with per-site controls so other pages are unaffected.
- You want broad automatic conversion and accept defects: Test the web-content flag, knowing it is experimental and may affect every site.
- You are evaluating the newest page transformations: Web Remix in Edge Canary is a preview, not a dependable production instruction.
Start with the least invasive option and add page-level changes only where the browser theme cannot reach. That preserves site layouts and reduces the chance that images, forms or accessibility cues become harder to use.
