Start with Settings > Display & Brightness > Dark. That changes the iPhone’s appearance and gives websites a dark-mode preference to follow. It does not force every website to use a dark background. For supported articles, Safari Reader is a cleaner alternative; for pages with no dark theme, Smart Invert or Firefox for iOS’s Website Dark Mode can recolor the page.
Turn on the iPhone setting first
Apple’s standard control is the system appearance setting. It affects iOS and compatible apps, and browsers can pass the preference to websites.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Select Dark. Apple’s instruction is simply: “Select Dark to turn on Dark Mode.”
To switch it quickly, open Control Center and use the appearance control if it is present. If it is missing, use Control Center’s edit interface to add it. You can also choose Automatic, then Options, to have iPhone change between light and dark appearance on a schedule.
Why a website can remain white
iPhone Dark Mode and a website’s own dark theme are related but not identical. Web authors can provide styles that respond to the WebKit prefers-color-scheme media feature. A site that has not implemented those styles can stay light even while every iPhone menu is dark.

#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
There is no universal iPhone switch that safely rewrites every third-party webpage. A site may also deliberately keep a light design, use a custom color system, or render content inside an embedded component that does not follow the browser preference. Treat the system setting as a request that compatible pages may honor, not a guarantee.
Use Safari Reader for supported articles
Reader is useful when your goal is comfortable reading rather than preserving the full website layout. It creates a streamlined text-and-image view and hides many page distractions. It is available only when Safari identifies the page as Reader-compatible.
- Open the article in Safari.
- Tap the Page Menu button in the address bar.
- Tap Show Reader when that option appears.
- Adjust Reader’s appearance controls if you want a darker reading presentation.
To enable Reader automatically for a particular supported site, open the Page Menu, choose Website Settings, and turn on Use Reader Automatically. Apple also provides a broader setting at Settings > Apps > Safari > Reader, where an All Websites option can apply Reader automatically on sites that support it.
Reader is not “Safari dark mode for every website.” It can remove navigation, comments, forms, shopping controls, and other parts of a normal page. Keep the normal view when you need the site’s full interface.

Use Smart Invert when the page has no dark theme
Smart Invert is Apple’s accessibility fallback for apps and websites that do not support Dark Mode. It reverses most interface colors while leaving images alone, so it is different from a site-authored dark stylesheet.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
- Turn on Smart Invert.
Expect exceptions. Logos, icons, video frames, charts, and colored controls may not look as their designer intended. Apple’s Classic Invert reverses all colors, including images; Smart Invert is usually the less disruptive choice for browsing. Turn the setting off from the same screen when you finish, or add an accessibility shortcut if you switch it frequently.
Browser-specific choices on iPhone
| Method | What it changes | Limit | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Dark Mode | System appearance and the preference sent to compatible web content | Unsupported sites can remain light | First step for the whole phone |
| Safari Reader | A simplified text-and-image reading view | Only appears on supported pages and is not a full webpage recolor | Articles and text-heavy pages |
| Smart Invert | Reverses colors while generally exempting images | Can change intended colors and is an accessibility adjustment | A page with no usable dark mode |
| Firefox Website Dark Mode | Inverts webpage colors inside Firefox | Browser-specific and may alter the page’s color presentation | Readers who want direct page recoloring in Firefox |
| Chrome Dark mode | Chrome’s homepage, toolbar, settings, and some other pages | Google does not promise dark treatment for every third-party website | Darkening Chrome’s own interface |
Firefox for iOS
Mozilla documents a Website Dark Mode feature separately from Firefox’s light or dark browser theme. Open Firefox’s menu and look for the website-darkening control; Mozilla’s support article describes an associated toggle under Appearance. The article was updated April 11, 2025, so the wording or menu location can differ in a later app release. This feature inverts webpage colors; it does not require every site to publish its own dark CSS.
Chrome for iOS
Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions begin by enabling iPhone Dark Mode and then opening Chrome. The documented effect covers Chrome’s interface and some other pages. It does not establish that all websites opened in Chrome will become dark, so use Reader, Smart Invert, or Firefox when you need a stronger fallback.

A practical decision path
- Want the whole phone dark? Choose Settings > Display & Brightness > Dark, or schedule Automatic.
- Reading an article in Safari? Try Page Menu > Show Reader. Enable Use Reader Automatically for a supported site you visit often.
- The page still has a white layout? Confirm that the site simply does not support
prefers-color-scheme; then decide whether Smart Invert’s color changes are acceptable. - You browse mainly in Firefox? Try its Website Dark Mode control. Keep Firefox’s ordinary app theme separate from this page-recoloring feature.
- You use Chrome? Enable iPhone Dark Mode for Chrome’s interface, but do not treat that setting as a guarantee for third-party pages.
Troubleshooting
The iPhone is dark, but Safari pages are still white
The website probably has no dark stylesheet, or part of the page is rendered in a component that ignores the system preference. Try Reader if the Page Menu offers it. If Reader is unavailable, Smart Invert is Apple’s documented fallback.
“Show Reader” is missing
Reader is offered only on pages Safari considers suitable for its simplified view. Reloading will not make an unsupported page eligible. Open a conventional article page rather than a home page, app dashboard, checkout, or interactive tool.
Smart Invert makes photos or brand colors look wrong
That is expected from an inversion filter, not a site-authored theme. Smart Invert usually leaves images unchanged but can alter surrounding controls and color relationships. Disable it when accurate color matters, such as design review or shopping.
Firefox’s control is not where the instructions say
Firefox’s labels and menu organization can change between iOS releases. Update Firefox, open its current menu, and search its settings for Website Dark Mode or Appearance. Mozilla’s April 11, 2025 support wording is a useful reference, not a promise that every later build uses identical labels.

Chrome is dark but a site is not
Google documents darkening Chrome’s own pages and some additional pages, not universal recoloring of every site. Use Safari Reader, Smart Invert, or Firefox for that particular page instead of repeatedly changing Chrome’s theme.
Colors look different after an iOS or browser update
These controls are version-sensitive. Recheck Settings > Display & Brightness, Safari’s Page Menu, and the current browser settings after an update. A website can also change its own dark-mode implementation independently of iOS.

FAQ
Does Dark Mode guarantee lower battery use on every iPhone website?
No universal battery percentage is established by the settings documentation. Any power effect depends on the iPhone display technology, brightness, colors, and the page itself, so enable Dark Mode for appearance or comfort rather than a promised saving.
Can a website owner make its page respond to iPhone Dark Mode?
Yes. WebKit documents the prefers-color-scheme mechanism, which lets site authors provide light and dark styles. Visitors cannot add that site-authored CSS through the normal iPhone Dark Mode switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
