Safari will show a site’s dark design only if that site provides dark-mode styles. If a particular site stays white, a Safari web extension that applies dark styling is the practical fallback; Safari’s built-in settings do not force every website to change.
Turn on Dark Mode for Safari on iPhone or iPad
Safari follows the appearance setting on your iPhone or iPad. The setting applies to the device’s interface, and compatible websites can respond to it with their own dark appearance. The precise Settings path can depend on your iOS or iPadOS release.

Use Settings
- Open Settings.
- On releases where it appears, tap Appearance, then choose Dark. Apple’s support instructions also identify Settings > Display & Brightness as the path on iOS 26 and earlier. If you do not see Appearance, open Display & Brightness and select Dark there.
- Return to Safari and reload the webpage. A reload gives the site a chance to check the updated device appearance and apply its dark styles.
Use Control Center
You can also switch the appearance without opening Settings: open Control Center, touch and hold the brightness bar, and choose Dark Mode. Return to Safari and reload the page.
Schedule the change
For an automatic schedule, choose Settings > Appearance > Automatic, then set the schedule under Options. On releases that use a different Settings layout, look for the automatic appearance control in the display or appearance settings. Automatic switching changes the device theme; it still does not make a site adopt dark colors unless the site supports them.

Turn on Dark Mode for Safari on Mac
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Click Appearance.
- Select Dark to keep the Mac in dark appearance, or choose Auto for automatic switching.
- Return to Safari and reload the website.
You can also toggle Dark Mode from the Display section of Control Center. Apple describes Dark appearance as changing the color scheme so content stands out while windows and controls recede. That system-level change is useful for viewing webpages, but the page itself still needs to provide dark-mode styling to appear dark.
Why a website can stay light when Safari is dark
Dark Mode is not a universal browser recoloring switch. Safari and WebKit can report that the device prefers a dark color scheme, but a website’s code determines whether and how to respond. A site may supply separate light and dark styles, may provide only a light design, or may not respond in the way you expect. Reloading after changing the device appearance is a sensible first step; it cannot add dark styles that the website does not have.
WebKit announced dark-mode support in Safari 12.1 on macOS 10.14.4 and iOS/iPadOS 13. The important practical distinction is between Safari supporting the preference and a website implementing a design for it: the former does not guarantee the latter.

Choose the right approach for the result you want
| Approach | What changes | Scope | Persistence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device Dark Mode | System appearance, plus dark styling on sites that support the preference | Device interface and compatible websites | Manual Dark setting or an automatic schedule |
| Safari Reader | A simplified reading view for supported article pages | Individual pages where Reader is available | Can be enabled for an article site in Website Settings |
| Safari web extension | Dark styling applied by the extension | Depends on the extension and its site access | While the extension is enabled; check its settings for any site-specific controls |
Use the built-in device setting first: it needs no extension and lets websites designed for dark appearance respond normally. Use Reader when the main goal is a less cluttered article view, not as a guaranteed dark-mode control. If a site still needs dark styling, consider an extension and review the access it requests.
Use Reader for a cleaner article view
On Mac, Safari’s Page menu beside the Smart Search field includes Website Settings. For an article site, enable Reader when available there. Reader strips distractions from supported reading pages, but Apple does not describe it as a dark-mode switch. Do not rely on Reader to recolor every page or to work on pages where it is unavailable.
Use an extension when a site ignores the system theme
If a website remains light after you turn on Dark Mode and reload, a Safari web extension that applies a dark stylesheet is the fallback. Apple’s Safari extensions editorial page lists Dark Reader for Safari as “Dark mode for every website.” That description is the listing’s wording, not a guarantee that every page will render perfectly. Extensions can change a webpage’s appearance, and their behavior and controls depend on the extension.

Enable an extension on iPhone or iPad
- In Safari, open the More menu and choose Extensions to manage extensions from the browser.
- Alternatively, open Settings > Safari > Extensions to manage them in Settings.
- Review the extension’s requested permissions and website access before enabling it.
Enable an extension on Mac
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings.
- Click Extensions.
- Enable the extension you want to use, after reviewing the access it requests.
Safari manages extension permissions and website access, and users control whether to grant access. An extension may request access to webpage content or URLs. Check the permission prompt and the extension’s settings rather than assuming that every extension has the same access or privacy practices.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a webpage rather than change how it looks while you browse, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a Safari dark-mode setting. It can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Its clean-shot steps can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billing status reported in response headers.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For example, this cURL request captures https://stripe.com as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same GET request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Or use the Node.js fetch example:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Plans include all features. Visit ScreenshotNeo for the service, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Troubleshoot Safari dark mode
Safari’s menus and controls are dark, but the webpage is still white
That usually means the site has not applied a dark design. Confirm that the device appearance is set to Dark, reload the page, and try another website. If other compatible sites respond but this one does not, the likely limitation is the site’s theme support; use an extension if you want to try applying dark styling.
The page did not change after I selected Dark
Reload the page after changing appearance. If it remains unchanged, check the device’s Appearance or Display & Brightness setting rather than assuming Safari has a separate global dark-mode switch. A site without dark styles will remain light in Safari’s built-in mode.
I cannot find Appearance in iPhone or iPad Settings
Settings labels vary by release. Apple’s support instructions identify Display & Brightness as the path on iOS 26 and earlier; look there for the Dark and automatic appearance controls if Appearance is not shown as its own item.

Reader is available, but it does not make the page dark
Reader’s purpose is to simplify supported article pages. It is not a universal dark-mode control. For a dark color scheme, use the device appearance setting on sites that support it, or consider a web extension.
An extension is enabled, but a site looks wrong or stays unchanged
Check the extension’s own controls and whether Safari has granted it access to that website. An extension’s effect depends on its settings and the page; the available evidence does not establish that any one extension will render every site correctly. If you do not want to grant the requested access, leave the extension disabled.
Quick Recap
What to check before changing the setting
- To darken Safari’s own interface, change the device appearance.
- To make a website dark, the site must support dark styles or an extension must apply them.
- To read an article with fewer distractions, use Reader where available; do not treat it as a guaranteed theme control.
- To automate system appearance, use the device’s automatic or scheduled option; individual sites still determine whether to respond.
