What Witcher 3 cross-save actually does
Cross Progression uploads eligible saves through your CD PROJEKT RED account so you can continue the same playthrough on another supported installation. The feature is not a direct console-to-console cable transfer and it does not merge two unrelated save lists. The source game must upload a save first; the destination game then downloads that account-linked save when you open Load Game.

The menu terminology is easy to miss because the feature is generally called “cross-save” by players, while the game calls it Cross Progression. Account linking is mandatory. Both installations must be able to run the content represented by the save, and a modded save may require the same mods on the destination.

Check these conditions before trying to move a save. Fixing one of them often resolves an apparent sync failure without any file repair.

- One CD PROJEKT RED account: the source and destination versions must be connected to the same account, not merely accounts belonging to the same console owner.
- Cross Progression available: the option is found at Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression. After account connection, CD PROJEKT RED says the feature is enabled by default.
- Matching game content: the destination needs the expansions and downloadable content required by the source save.
- Matching mods: if the source save uses mods, the destination needs the same compatible mod set enabled.
- A newly created source save: create a save after enabling and linking the feature; do not rely on an older local save to prove that an upload occurred.
How to enable cross-save on PlayStation, Xbox and PC
1. Update both game installations
Install the latest patch offered by your platform, then start the game. Cross Progression behavior changed with the modern version of The Witcher 3, so an unpatched installation can show different menus or fail to recognize a save created by a newer build. Update the source and destination even if you intend to play only briefly on the second platform.
2. Connect the source game to your CD PROJEKT RED account
Open the account or online-services prompt presented by the game and sign in to the CD PROJEKT RED account you intend to use on every platform. If the game displays an account already connected, verify that it is the correct one before uploading. Signing into a different account on the destination creates the most common form of “missing” save: the upload exists, but the destination is looking at another account.
3. Confirm Cross Progression in the options
From the main menu, open Options, choose Gameplay, and locate Cross Progression. Account linking normally turns it on automatically, but the setting is the practical check when no cloud icon appears. If it is off, enable it and return to the game.
4. Create a fresh save
Load the progress you want to carry over and make a new manual save. The upload indicator is tied to the newly created save, so creating one after account connection is important. Open the save list and look for a cloud icon beside the new entry. That icon is the visible confirmation that the save was uploaded for Cross Progression.
5. Open the save on the destination platform
Start the game on the second platform, connect it to the same CD PROJEKT RED account, and open Load Game. Uploaded saves from the account should appear in the list. Select the desired save and use the Cross Progression control shown at the bottom of the screen. The game displays the relevant button or key for the platform you are using; there is no single universal control that applies to every controller and keyboard layout.
Nintendo Switch: the different sequence
Switch uses a documented My Rewards-first flow rather than the exact sequence used on the other versions.
- Launch The Witcher 3 on Switch and open My Rewards.
- Connect My Rewards to the CD PROJEKT RED account that will also be used on the other platform.
- Return to the game and open Load Game.
- Use the on-screen Cross Progression control to access the uploaded save.
Switch players should also distinguish the older Steam/GOG cloud integration from the current Cross Progression method. The Switch support instructions state that saves previously handled through that older integration need the Cross Progression feature introduced in update 4.04 to carry over. In practical terms, update the Switch game, perform the My Rewards account connection, enable the modern feature where available, and upload a new save rather than expecting the old cloud mechanism to populate the list automatically.

How to transfer a save from PS4 to PS5
The PS4-to-PS5 process follows the same account-and-upload model. On the PS4 version, update the game, connect the CD PROJEKT RED account, enable Cross Progression if needed, and create a new save. Confirm the cloud icon beside that save. On the PS5 version, sign into the identical CD PROJEKT RED account, open Load Game, and select the uploaded entry using the prompt shown on screen.
Do not treat the console generation change as proof that a save should appear automatically. A local PS4 save and a cloud-uploaded Cross Progression save are separate things. If the PS5 list is empty, return to the PS4 installation while it is still accessible and verify the cloud icon on a newly created save.

Edition and downloadable-content rules
Save compatibility depends on the content installed at the destination. The important distinction is between a base-game installation and the Complete or GOTY product that includes the expansions and associated downloadable content.

On consoles, the base game and GOTY/Complete Edition are separate products for local saves. Cross Progression can allow continuation between versions, but it does not remove the content requirement. A base-game save is the less restrictive direction because the Complete Edition contains the base content. A Complete Edition save may reference expansion quests, items or other downloadable content that a base-only destination does not have.

Work through the following checks in order. Each step tests a different failure point, so skipping directly to reinstalling the game can waste time and does not correct an account mismatch.
1. There is no cloud icon beside the source save
This means the save has not been visibly confirmed as uploaded. Open Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression and make sure the feature is enabled. Then create another manual save after the setting is active and check the new entry. The cloud icon should appear beside the uploaded save.
If the option is unavailable, first finish the account connection flow and restart the game. A platform can be online while the game is still signed into the wrong CD PROJEKT RED account, so verify the account identity rather than relying on the console profile alone.
2. The destination list is empty
Confirm that the destination is connected to the exact same CD PROJEKT RED account as the source. The account email or account identity must match; using the same PlayStation Network, Xbox or PC owner profile does not substitute for the game-account link.
Next, return to the source installation and make a new save. If the source entry has no cloud icon, there is nothing for the destination to retrieve. Once an icon is present, restart the destination game, open Load Game, and check the list again.
3. The save appears but will not load
Compare the source and destination editions and installed content. A Complete Edition save cannot be loaded on a base-game installation that lacks the expansions and DLC it requires. Install the missing content, update the destination, and try the save again.
For a modded save, compare the enabled mod list on both installations. CD PROJEKT RED warns that a missing or incompatible mod can prevent correct loading. Disable unsupported changes only if you have a safe, compatible save path; removing a mod from an active save can itself create missing references.

4. A save vanished after a console Remastered update
Sign in with the CD PROJEKT RED account that was previously used for Cross Progression. A remastered or updated console installation may not show local progress in the same place as the older installation, while the account-linked upload remains available through the modern load flow.
If Cross Progression was never used and the old console is still accessible, open the old version, connect the account, enable the feature, and upload a new save. CD PROJEKT RED states that support cannot retrieve saves when Cross Progression was never used and the player no longer has access to the old console. This makes access to the original machine important: use it to create the first cloud-backed save before disposing of, resetting or selling it.
5. The wrong control is being pressed in Load Game
The Cross Progression action is shown as a button or key prompt at the bottom of the Load Game screen. Use that displayed prompt for the current platform and input device. Instructions that name one fixed button for every version can be misleading because layouts differ between console controllers, keyboard settings and platform editions.

When troubleshooting, write down the values for the source and destination instead of checking them from memory. The following comparison catches mismatches quickly.

A safe repeatable workflow for moving progress
Use this procedure whenever you move between platforms, even if an earlier transfer worked. It leaves a recent recovery point on the source device.

- Update The Witcher 3 on both platforms.
- Confirm the source edition and the expansions or DLC used in the playthrough.
- Connect the source game to the intended CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Open Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression and enable it if it is not already active.
- Load the desired checkpoint and create a new manual save.
- Open the save list and verify the cloud icon beside that new entry.
- On the destination, install the required edition, expansions and DLC.
- Connect the destination game to the same CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Open Load Game and use the displayed Cross Progression control.
- Load the uploaded save and make a local save on the destination after confirming that the world, quests and inventory are correct.
That final local save gives you a current checkpoint on the destination. Keep the original source save until you have confirmed that the transfer opened correctly, particularly when the playthrough uses mods or expansion content.
What Cross Progression does not fix
- It does not make a base-game installation understand expansion content that is not installed.
- It does not reconcile saves from different CD PROJEKT RED accounts.
- It does not guarantee that a modded save will work with a different or incomplete mod set.
- It does not recover a local save from an inaccessible console when that save was never uploaded through Cross Progression.
- It does not use the old Steam/GOG cloud integration as a substitute for the modern Switch Cross Progression flow introduced in update 4.04.
Frequently overlooked details
Account connection is separate from platform ownership
Owning the game on two platforms does not automatically connect their saves. The account link is the identity that tells the game which uploaded saves belong to you. Check it on each installation before creating the source save.
The cloud icon is more useful than a successful save message
A manual save can complete normally while remaining local. The cloud icon beside the save is the practical confirmation that Cross Progression uploaded it. If the icon is missing, troubleshoot the setting and account before attempting the destination load.
Content direction matters
Moving a base-game save into the Complete Edition is supported because the destination includes the base content. Moving in the opposite direction requires the destination to contain every expansion and DLC element used by the Complete Edition save.
Keep the original console when migration is unfinished
If you have not yet created a Cross Progression upload, the old console may be the only place where the local save exists. Upload a fresh save and verify its cloud icon before resetting or giving away that hardware.
