There is no universal Android switch for “battery-free mode.” On supported phones, battery bypass is a manufacturer-specific feature: Google Pixel’s Limit to 80% can power the phone from its charger after the battery reaches 80%, while Samsung Galaxy’s Pause USB Power Delivery works during gaming under specific charger and battery conditions.
What “battery-free mode” means on Android
Two different things are often described as battery-free. A batteryless device is designed to operate without an internal battery; Android’s platform documentation covers the system work involved in supporting that type of product. Battery bypass on a phone instead means that, under supported conditions, power from the charger runs the device without continuing to charge the battery. Whether a phone can do this—and how to enable it—depends on its maker, model, software, and, in some cases, what the phone is doing.

Google Pixel: use Limit to 80%
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery health, then Charging optimization.
- Turn on Use charging optimization.
- Select Limit to 80%.
- Keep the phone connected until it reaches 80%. According to Android Authority’s report of Google’s confirmation, once the limit is reached, the battery stops charging and the connected power source runs the phone.
This is not a manual bypass switch that works at any charge level: the reported bypass behavior begins after the phone reaches 80% while plugged in. Google presents the option as a charging optimization intended to prioritize long-term battery health. Google also says the phone fully charges on every tenth cycle to keep battery-capacity readings accurate. Google’s help page does not establish an exact list of Pixel models with the reported bypass behavior. Check whether the setting appears on your specific phone and consult current Google guidance; do not assume that every Pixel supports it. Samsung Galaxy: use Pause USB Power Delivery while gaming
Samsung calls its feature Pause USB Power Delivery and describes it as a direct system power supply method that bypasses the battery. It operates while a game is running and requires all of the following:

- A USB Power Delivery charger that supports PPS and is rated at 25 W or higher.
- Battery charge of at least 20%.
- A game running, with the feature enabled.
- Connect the phone to the compatible charger.
- Open Gaming Hub.
- Tap More (or the three-dot menu), then choose Game Booster.
- Turn on Pause USB Power Delivery. If it is missing or disabled, Samsung’s instructions also describe opening the in-game Game Booster icon and checking its settings.
- Run a game and keep the battery at or above 20%.
The feature may turn off when gaming ends or if the phone leaves the active game. Samsung UK’s support page lists the S22 and S23 series, Tab S8 series, Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Flip5, Z Fold4 and Z Fold5, A23, A33, A53, A73, and M33. That regional list should not be treated as a complete or current worldwide compatibility matrix. How to check whether your Android phone supports battery bypass
- Find the exact model name and software version in your phone’s Settings. “Android phone” or a USB-C port alone does not establish support.
- Look for the manufacturer’s own feature name: on Pixel, check Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization for Limit to 80%; on Samsung, check Gaming Hub > More > Game Booster for Pause USB Power Delivery.
- For Samsung, connect a qualifying PD/PPS charger and check Game Booster again; the option may be unavailable until the prerequisites are met.
- If the option is absent, check the manufacturer’s current support information for your exact model and region. A compatible charger cannot add bypass support to a phone that lacks the required hardware or software.
Menu names and availability can change with software updates. For Pixel cable and adapter compatibility, see Google’s charging guidance; for Samsung, consult the Samsung feature instructions and confirm the option on the phone itself.
