You cannot currently enable Apple Intelligence while using a supported device in mainland China. Apple says the features are unavailable on supported devices purchased in mainland China. A device purchased elsewhere is also blocked when you are physically in mainland China and its Apple Account Country or Region is set to mainland China. There is no Apple-supported switch, language change, or activation procedure that bypasses those conditions.
What Apple’s current China policy means
Apple’s support guidance, published September 14, 2026, makes mainland-China availability the controlling condition. It states: “Apple Intelligence features will not currently work for supported devices purchased in China mainland.” It also states that a supported device purchased outside mainland China will not currently work when both of these are true:

Apple has not published a mainland-China launch date on the cited support page. It says that, once Apple Intelligence becomes available there, previously purchased compatible devices will be able to activate a core set of features. Apple also says new features will not be available in China while it works through regulatory requirements.

Keep the three eligibility gates separate
Readers often treat Apple Intelligence as a single on/off setting, but Apple’s wording describes three distinct gates. First is the device gate: the exact model and chip must be on Apple’s compatibility list. Second is the technical setup gate: the operating system, matching device and Siri languages, and available local storage must meet Apple’s requirements. Third is the regional gate: where the device was purchased, where it is being used and, for an overseas purchase in mainland China, the Apple Account Country or Region.
A device can pass the first two gates and still fail the third. For example, an M-series Mac bought outside China with macOS 27, English selected for both the system and Siri, and more than 14 GB free can nevertheless remain unavailable while it is in mainland China with a mainland-China account region. Conversely, changing an account or language does not make an unsupported model eligible.
Can an overseas-purchased device be enabled in mainland China?
Not under Apple’s current stated conditions if you are in mainland China and your Apple Account region is mainland China. Buying the iPhone, iPad or Mac in another country does not by itself create an exception.

Language matching is required for eligible use, but it does not remove the China-specific block.
Apple says Apple Intelligence continues to work when an otherwise eligible device and account travel to other regions. That travel statement does not make a device purchased in mainland China eligible, and it does not establish that an overseas device can be activated while it remains subject to the mainland-China conditions.
Check the requirements that will apply when service is available
Use this checklist to determine whether your device is technically ready. These checks are useful now, but they cannot activate Apple Intelligence in mainland China before Apple enables the service there.
1. Confirm the hardware family
| Platform | Models Apple lists as compatible |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air |
| iPad | iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad models with an M1 chip or later |
| Mac | MacBook Neo (A18 Pro) and Mac models with an M1 chip or later |
Apple’s compatibility list is model-specific. An iPhone 15 that is not a Pro model, an iPad without an M-series chip, or an Intel Mac is not included in the listed families. Apple Intelligence availability can also vary by platform, language and region, so a compatible model does not guarantee that every feature will appear.

The iPad requirement is “iPad mini (A17 Pro)” or an M1-or-newer iPad; the Mac requirement includes Mac models with M1 or later plus the separately listed MacBook Neo with an A18 Pro. A newer name alone is not a substitute for checking Apple’s model list.

2. Update to the required software generation
Apple lists iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate for the current supported-device requirements. Install the latest release offered for your exact model rather than assuming that an older 27.x build has every feature. Apple says eligible devices automatically make Apple Intelligence available after updating to the 27.0 software releases when a supported language and region are in use.
On an iPhone or iPad, check the Software Update screen in Settings. On a Mac, use the Software Update pane in System Settings. If the required major version is not offered, the model may not support that operating-system generation; do not treat a missing update as evidence of a China-only activation problem.
Updating is preparation, not an activation workaround. A device that remains under Apple’s mainland-China restriction will not become usable simply because it reaches iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or macOS 27 Golden Gate.

Apple says the on-device models can require several gigabytes of storage:
| Device group | Storage Apple says may be required | Models covered |
|---|---|---|
| Larger requirement | Up to 14 GB | iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air; iPads with M4 or later and at least 12 GB unified memory; Macs with M3 or later and at least 12 GB unified memory; Apple Vision Pro with M5 |
| Other supported models | Up to 8 GB | Other supported iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro models |
“Up to” is a maximum cited by Apple, not a promise that every model downloads exactly that amount. Keep additional headroom beyond the stated figure for the operating system, app updates and personal files. If an eligible device reports insufficient space, remove or offload large videos and unused apps, then retry the software update or feature download.
The storage figure is local device storage, not an iCloud plan allowance. Before a future download, check the device’s available-capacity screen and avoid filling it to the exact 8 GB or 14 GB threshold; the operating system still needs working space for installation and updates.
4. Match the device and Siri languages
Apple requires the device language and Siri language to be set to the same supported language. The listed languages are English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
On iPhone and iPad, review the language setting and Siri language in Settings; on Mac, review the corresponding Language & Region and Siri settings in System Settings. Select the same language in both places, allow any language resources to finish downloading, and restart only if the operating system requests it. Matching languages satisfies a prerequisite; it does not bypass mainland-China availability rules.

Keyboard language, region-format preferences and the language used in individual apps are not identified by Apple as substitutes for the device-and-Siri match. The relevant check is the system language paired with Siri’s language.
What to do now if you are in mainland China
There is no supported activation sequence to complete today. The practical process is to verify readiness and wait for Apple’s regional launch rather than repeatedly changing account or language settings.
- Identify where the device was purchased. If it was purchased in mainland China, Apple’s current policy excludes it from Apple Intelligence for now. If it was purchased elsewhere, continue checking the account and location conditions.
- Check your physical location. An overseas purchase is still blocked when you are in mainland China under the conditions Apple describes.
- Check the Apple Account Country or Region. A mainland-China account region is part of the stated block for an overseas-purchased device located in mainland China.
- Verify model, software, language and storage. These are the technical prerequisites that will matter when the service is enabled, but passing them does not turn on the service before then.
- Do not erase the device or create an account solely to chase an activation prompt. Apple has not documented that as a solution, and erasing can create backup, authentication and data-loss risks without changing the regional policy.
If you travel outside mainland China
Apple says Apple Intelligence continues to work when you travel to other regions, provided the device and account are otherwise eligible. This is a usage statement for an already eligible setup, not a promise that a mainland-China-purchased device becomes eligible merely by crossing a border.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For an overseas-purchased device, eligibility still depends on the complete combination of model, supported software, matching languages, available storage and Apple Account conditions. A short trip should not be treated as a guaranteed activation method, and changing the account country can affect subscriptions, payment methods, balances and other Apple services.
Travel therefore answers a narrow question: whether an already eligible configuration keeps working abroad. It does not answer whether an ineligible configuration can be activated temporarily, and Apple has not described a travel-based exception for mainland-China purchases.
How activation is expected to work after mainland-China availability begins
Apple has not published a final China-specific activation walkthrough or launch date. Its current wording indicates that previously purchased compatible devices will be able to activate and use a core set of Apple Intelligence features when the service becomes available in mainland China.
When that happens, the sensible order will be:
- Update the device to the supported iOS, iPadOS or macOS release offered for the model.
- Confirm that the device and Siri use the same supported language.
- Free the required local storage, allowing up to 14 GB on the higher-storage configurations and up to 8 GB on other supported models.
- Follow the Apple Intelligence prompt or settings control presented by Apple for that release and region.
- Allow on-device models and language resources to download over a reliable connection, then test the individual features available on that platform.
The final feature set may differ by platform, language and region. A launch of a core set does not mean that every Apple Intelligence feature introduced elsewhere arrives in mainland China at the same time.
Apple’s statement about previously purchased devices is significant for owners who already have qualifying hardware: the policy does not say that they must buy a new China-specific model after launch. It promises activation for previously purchased devices that support Apple Intelligence, subject to the final regional rollout and feature limits.

Why the rollout has taken longer in China
Apple’s February 22, 2025 China newsroom announcement said Simplified Chinese and other languages would ship with iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4. That language expansion did not establish mainland-China Apple Intelligence availability under Apple’s later support policy.
The same announcement said the timing of Apple Intelligence’s China launch depended on regulatory approval: “Apple 智能在中国推出的时间依监管部门审批情况而定。” In English, Apple describes this as the timing depending on approval from regulatory authorities. Language support and service authorization are therefore separate milestones.
Troubleshooting: identify the type of failure
The device is not listed as compatible
Check the exact model, not only the product name. The current list starts at iPhone 15 Pro and includes newer listed iPhone models, the A17 Pro iPad mini and M1-or-later iPads, and M1-or-later Macs. If the model is outside those families, a software update will not add compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe required software is unavailable
Install all offered updates and confirm that the device has enough free storage. If iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or macOS 27 Golden Gate is not offered for the model, it may be outside the supported hardware list. Do not install unofficial system software to force an unsupported configuration.
The language requirement is reported as incomplete
Set the device language and Siri language to exactly the same supported language. “English (United States)” and another Siri locale may not satisfy a strict matching check; use the same language choice in both settings and wait for any resource download to complete.
Everything is eligible except the region
This is the expected result under the current mainland-China policy, not a fault with the device. An overseas purchase, a matching language and an M-series chip do not override Apple’s stated location and Apple Account conditions. There is no Apple-supported switch to change that status today.
The device has enough storage but still shows no feature
Storage is only one prerequisite. Recheck the exact model, operating-system generation, device language, Siri language, physical location and Apple Account Country or Region. If all technical checks pass while the device is in mainland China under Apple’s stated conditions, the regional block explains the missing feature.
Choosing a device while waiting for the China launch
If Apple Intelligence is an important reason for a purchase, compare the following rather than assuming that the newest product automatically offers the broadest service:

- Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Straight Talk., Etc.
- Compatibility list: verify the exact model and chip against Apple’s supported families.
- Unified memory: some newer iPads and Macs with at least 12 GB fall into Apple’s higher, up-to-14-GB storage requirement.
- Storage headroom: leave room for on-device models in addition to normal system and personal-file needs.
- Language: ensure the language you use is on Apple’s supported list and can be selected identically for Siri.
- Regional feature set: Apple warns that availability can vary by platform, language and region, so a compatible device may receive a smaller feature subset in mainland China.
These comparisons help avoid buying hardware that cannot meet the technical prerequisites, but no purchase decision can guarantee a mainland-China activation date that Apple has not announced.

Bottom line for iPhone, iPad and Mac owners in China
As of October 2026, mainland-China regional availability—not a hidden setting—is the blocker. China-purchased supported devices are excluded for now, and overseas-purchased devices are also blocked in mainland China when the Apple Account region is mainland China. Keep the device updated, match the device and Siri languages, and reserve the required storage so the hardware is ready. Activation must wait for Apple to make the service available in mainland China; Apple has not announced the date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enable Apple Intelligence by changing my iPhone or Mac to English?
No. Device and Siri languages must match a supported language, but Apple’s mainland-China restriction still applies. Language changes are a prerequisite for eligible use, not a regional workaround.
Does buying an iPhone, iPad or Mac overseas bypass the China block?
No. Apple says an overseas-purchased supported device will not currently work when you are in mainland China and the Apple Account Country or Region is mainland China.
Will an M-series iPad or Mac bought in mainland China work?
Not currently. Apple’s support policy excludes supported devices purchased in mainland China, regardless of whether the hardware meets the chip requirement.
Will Apple Intelligence work when I travel outside mainland China?
Apple says it continues to work in other regions for a device and account that are otherwise eligible. That statement does not make a mainland-China-purchased device eligible or guarantee activation during a short trip.
How much free storage should I keep?
Apple cites up to 14 GB for specified newer configurations and up to 8 GB for other supported iPhone, iPad and Mac models. Keep extra room for the operating system, updates and personal files.
Which languages are supported?
Apple lists English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The device and Siri must use the same language.
Is there a China launch date?
Apple’s September 14, 2026 support guidance does not provide one. Apple says timing depends on regulatory requirements and that a core set will be available for previously purchased compatible devices when the service launches.
Do I need to erase my device or create a new Apple Account?
No supported procedure says that either action enables Apple Intelligence. Erasing can create backup and data-loss risks, while changing an account country can affect other Apple services without overriding Apple’s stated policy.
The Bottom Line
Apple Intelligence cannot currently be enabled in mainland China. Verify your model, software, matching languages and storage now, but wait for Apple’s regional launch rather than relying on language changes, travel or account changes.
