The first time, select Turn on. You can also enable it at Start > Settings > System > Clipboard > Clipboard history. Once enabled, copy several items normally, press Windows+V, and select any entry to paste it. These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; however, Windows 10 no longer receives free security fixes or technical support after October 14, 2025.
What Clipboard history does
The ordinary Windows clipboard holds the most recently copied item. Clipboard history adds a panel containing multiple recent copied items, allowing you to choose which one to paste instead of copying it again. The panel is opened with Windows+V, where “Windows” means the key with the Windows logo.

History is useful when you are assembling a document from several sources, entering repeated text, moving multiple snippets between applications, or switching between addresses, notes, and other copied content. It is built into Windows, so no separate utility, keyboard, or paid service is required for the basic feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEnable Clipboard history in seconds
Fastest method: Windows+V
- Copy any item, or simply press Windows+V.
- If history is disabled, a prompt appears. Select Turn on.
- Copy additional items as usual. Each supported item is added to the history panel.
- Press Windows+V whenever you need the list, then select an entry to paste it into the active application.
The first Windows+V press is both the quickest way to discover the feature and the quickest way to activate it. If the panel does not offer a Turn on option, use the Settings route below to check the switch directly.

Settings method
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open System, then select Clipboard.
- Turn on Clipboard history.
- Return to your application and press Windows+V to view copied entries.
The labels above are the current paths documented by Microsoft for both Windows 10 and Windows 11. The surrounding Settings design can look different between those releases, but the System and Clipboard locations are the same.
Use the history panel
Paste an older copied item
- Click in the document, message, form, or other application where the content should go.
- Press Windows+V.
- Select the required entry in the panel.
Windows inserts the selected item at the active cursor position. Copying another item does not require you to clear the panel first; the new item is added automatically until the history limit is reached.
Keep an item after a restart
Open Windows+V, find the item, open its more-options menu, and choose Pin. Pinned entries remain available through a PC restart. Pinning is appropriate for text you reuse frequently, such as a standard paragraph or a regularly entered value, but it should not be used as a substitute for a secure password manager.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Delete one entry
Open Windows+V, open the more-options menu for the unwanted entry, and choose Delete. This removes that item without clearing the rest of the history.
Clear all unneeded entries
To clear the panel, choose Clear all inside Windows+V. You can also open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and select Clear. Microsoft’s documented clear-all action does not remove pinned entries, so inspect pinned content separately if you are preparing a shared or unattended PC.
Open history while working
Clipboard history is designed to be opened on demand rather than left as a separate window. First place the insertion point in the destination app, then use Windows+V. Selecting a clip closes the panel and pastes it at that location. If you open the panel before selecting a text box, click the destination field first and reopen the panel so the paste goes where intended.
Limits and retention behavior
| Behavior | Current Microsoft guidance | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum history | 25 copied entries | When the limit is reached, older unpinned entries are automatically removed as newer items are added. |
| Maximum item size | 4 MB per item | An item larger than this limit cannot be relied on as a Clipboard history entry. |
| Supported formats listed by Microsoft | Text, HTML, and Bitmap | Content is retained only in the formats Windows documents for this feature. |
| Restart behavior | Unpinned history is cleared when the PC restarts | Pin entries that must survive a restart. |
| Pinned entries | Retained through restart and excluded from the documented Clear all action | Review and delete pins individually when they are no longer appropriate. |
The 25-entry and 4 MB figures are product limits in Microsoft’s current support guidance, accessed October 13, 2026, not independent performance measurements. They describe the built-in Windows feature, not third-party clipboard managers.

The format note matters when copying rich content. Microsoft lists text, HTML, and Bitmap, but that does not promise that every application will preserve its own formatting or embedded objects. If a clip looks different after pasting, try a plain-text version or paste it into an application that supports the original format.
Sync Clipboard history between Windows devices
Windows can synchronize clipboard history between devices when you deliberately enable the feature. This is separate from merely keeping history on one PC.
- On each Windows device, open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Enable Clipboard history if it is not already enabled.
- Turn on the option to synchronize clipboard history across devices.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account or the same work account on every participating device.
- Choose either automatic text synchronization or manual synchronization from an individual item in Windows+V.
Automatic text synchronization sends copied text for synchronization without requiring you to select each item. Manual synchronization lets you decide which item is sent by using the sync control on that entry in the Windows+V panel. The documented workflow concerns copied text; do not assume that every format or application-specific object will synchronize identically.
Privacy decisions before enabling sync
Microsoft’s sync workflow sends copied text to the cloud so it can reach another device. Treat that as a data-sharing decision, not merely a convenience switch. Leave synchronization off on devices where it is not wanted, prefer manual sync when you need tighter control, and clear sensitive entries after use. This is especially important on a shared computer or when copying account details, private messages, internal documents, or other confidential text.
A practical setup is to enable automatic sync only on devices you control and use manual sync for occasional transfers. After pasting a sensitive clip, delete that entry on each device where it appears. Remember that pinning makes a clip persist through restart and protects it from Clear all, so do not pin material merely because it is convenient.
Why Clipboard history may look empty
Clipboard history is not enabled
Press Windows+V. If Windows displays the activation prompt, select Turn on. Alternatively, check Settings > System > Clipboard and enable Clipboard history.
The PC restarted
Unpinned entries are cleared at restart. This is expected behavior, not necessarily a failure. Pin anything that must remain available, then copy it again if it was not pinned before the restart.

The entry was removed by the size or count limit
History holds up to 25 entries, and each item is limited to 4 MB. If you copied more than 25 items, older unpinned entries may already have been displaced. A large item may also fail to appear because it exceeds the per-item limit.
Recommended Free Tools
You used Clear all
Clear all removes the unpinned history shown in the panel. Pinned items are excluded from that documented action, so check the pinned section if an item you expected to disappear is still present.
Cross-device sync is not working
- Confirm that Clipboard history and cross-device synchronization are enabled on every device.
- Verify that all devices use the same Microsoft account or the same work account.
- Check whether the item was sent manually, if automatic text sync is not enabled.
- Remember that synchronization is intended for copied text and that application-specific formatting may not be preserved identically.
If the same-account and setting checks pass but an item still does not arrive, copy a short text sample and try the manual sync control on that item. This isolates an account or synchronization-setting problem from an issue involving a particular application or format.
The copied content is not a supported or complete clip
Microsoft documents text, HTML, and Bitmap formats for Clipboard history. A proprietary object, an application-only selection, or content larger than 4 MB may not appear as expected. Test with a short plain-text sentence; if that works, the issue is likely related to the original content rather than the history switch.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 support context
Microsoft’s clipboard instructions cover both Windows 10 and Windows 11. The clipboard steps remain relevant on Windows 10, but support status matters: Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Clipboard history may still operate, but using an unsupported operating system carries a separate security and maintenance risk.
Clipboard history versus Android-related copy and paste features
Several Microsoft features move copied content between a PC and a phone, but they do not provide the same workflow. Choose based on whether you need a Windows history, a keyboard-based Android workflow, or a current clipboard shared between devices.
| Feature | Device coverage | What is retained | Account or setup requirement | Sync behavior and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Clipboard history | Windows devices | Up to 25 copied entries, with pins retained through restart | Enable Clipboard history; use the same Microsoft or work account for cross-device sync | Automatic text sync or manual item sync; copied text is sent to the cloud when synchronization is used |
| Microsoft SwiftKey Cloud Clipboard | SwiftKey Keyboard on Android and Windows | The last copied clip, retained for one hour according to Microsoft’s SwiftKey support guidance | Set up SwiftKey’s cloud clipboard workflow between the Android keyboard and Windows | Designed for the last clip rather than a 25-item Windows history; it is a separate integration |
| Phone Link copy and paste | A paired Windows PC and Android device | The current copied item, which replaces clipboard content on both devices | Configure copy and paste between the PC and Android device through Phone Link | Formatting can vary by application; whether mobile data is used depends on device synchronization settings |
These options are not interchangeable. Use Windows+V when you need to choose among several recent Windows clips. Use the SwiftKey workflow when the Android keyboard is the important part of the process and the last clip is sufficient. Use Phone Link when you need current copy-and-paste between a paired PC and phone rather than a retained list.

For example, copying three passages on a Windows laptop and choosing among them later is a Clipboard history task. Sending one sentence from an Android keyboard to Windows through SwiftKey is a last-clip workflow. Phone Link is likewise centered on the current clipboard, so copying a new item replaces the previous item on both paired devices.
Practical workflows
Building a document from several sources
Copy each required passage, switching between source windows as needed. When writing, press Windows+V and select the passage you need at that moment. This avoids repeatedly returning to each source just to recopy the same text. Because the panel is limited to 25 entries, pin a passage you will reuse throughout the session and clear the rest when the work is finished.

Entering repeated text safely
Pin a non-sensitive standard snippet that you use frequently, then retrieve it with Windows+V whenever required. Do not pin passwords, authentication codes, private keys, or confidential customer information. Pinned content survives restart and is not removed by Clear all, which makes careless pinning more persistent than ordinary clipboard use.
Moving a short note between Windows PCs
Enable history and cross-device sync on both PCs, sign in with the same account, and choose automatic text sync or manually sync the specific entry. On the destination PC, press Windows+V and select the synchronized text. For confidential material, leave sync disabled or clear the entry after pasting.
Cleaning up after a shared session
Review the Windows+V panel before handing a PC to another person. Delete individual clips that should not remain, use Clear all for the unpinned list, and inspect pinned entries separately because Clear all does not remove them. If synchronization was enabled, clear the corresponding sensitive clips on participating devices as well.

- Use Windows+V and choose Turn on the first time.
- Use Settings > System > Clipboard when you need to verify or change the setting.
- Select an entry in Windows+V to paste it.
- Choose Pin for items that must survive a restart.
- Use Delete for one item and Clear all for the unpinned list.
- Remember the documented limits: 25 entries and 4 MB per item.
- For device-to-device use, enable sync on every device and use the same Microsoft or work account.
- Decide deliberately whether copied text should be sent to the cloud.
Bottom line
For a single Windows PC, the complete setup is Windows+V, then Turn on; afterward, Windows+V is the control panel for selecting, pinning, deleting, and clearing clips. Enable cross-device synchronization only when the same-account requirement, cloud transfer, and retention behavior fit your needs. The built-in feature is intentionally bounded to 25 entries and 4 MB per item, so it is best treated as a convenient short-term history rather than permanent storage.

Synchronization sends copied text to the cloud so it can reach another device. Leave sync off when it is not wanted, use manual item sync for more control, and clear sensitive clips after pasting.
Does Phone Link provide the same feature as Windows+V?
No. Phone Link shares the current copied item between a paired PC and Android device, and a new copy replaces the previous clipboard content. Windows+V provides a retained Windows list of up to 25 entries.
How is SwiftKey Cloud Clipboard different?
Microsoft SwiftKey’s Android workflow is a separate integration that makes the last copied clip available between SwiftKey Keyboard and Windows for one hour. It is not the same as Windows’ 25-entry history.
