The model manager is global: it applies to the AI subsystem and lets you order providers by priority. If an application does not explicitly select a model or deployment type, openKylin uses the highest-priority available provider and falls back when that provider is unavailable.
For a ready-to-use hosted model, connect an OpenAI-compatible client to the openKylin LLM Gateway, then add the same provider to the built-in AI Assistant, Codex, or another supported coding tool. Install kylin-python for Python work, and add Remote-Dev when the source or build environment is on another machine.

What you need before enabling AI development tools
The exact menus vary slightly between openKylin releases and IDE builds, but the setup has four independent parts:

- Model management: a newer system image should include the
kylin-ai-model-managerpackage and expose the AI Module Management page. - Provider access: either a model already available to the system or credentials for an external API provider.
- Client integration: the built-in AI Assistant, Codex, Claude Code, or another client that accepts the provider’s API format.
- Language and workspace tooling:
kylin-pythonfor Python, plus Remote-Dev if editing and running code on an SSH server.
Keep the operating system and IDE packages updated before troubleshooting. A missing model-manager page or missing extension may indicate an older image rather than a bad API key.

1. Open the global AI model manager
- Open Settings.
- Go to General → AI Module Management.
- Review the providers already registered by the system.
- Move the preferred provider to the highest position. Leave a second provider enabled if you want automatic fallback.
- Save the change and reopen an AI-powered application if it does not immediately refresh its provider list.
openKylin’s AI SDK documentation describes this configuration as global. An SDK application that does not name a model or deployment type inherits the model selected by the AI subsystem. Priority therefore matters: the first available provider handles requests, while lower entries are used when the preferred provider cannot be reached.
When the page is missing
Do not create a project-level configuration as a substitute for a missing system component. Confirm that the installation is a newer openKylin build containing kylin-ai-model-manager, then update the system or install the corresponding openKylin package through your organization’s normal package-management process. The precise package command is release-specific and is not the same on every openKylin image.
2. Connect the openKylin LLM Gateway
The official free-token instructions identify the openKylin LLM Gateway as an OpenAI-compatible service. Its documented request endpoint is https://llm-gateway.openkylin.top/v1. Requests use Bearer authentication.

Request and protect an API key
- Apply for access through the openKylin service and wait for approval.
- Use 领取 API Key (the “Get API Key” action) after approval.
- Copy the complete key immediately. The complete value is displayed only when the key is issued or reset; later pages show only a prefix.
- Store the key in a password manager or an environment-variable store. The displayed prefix cannot authenticate requests.
Never paste the key into a shared screenshot, commit it to a Git repository, or place it in a project file that will be uploaded. If the value is lost, reset the key and update every client that used the old value.

Availability is controlled by the gateway and your account. A model can be listed in the guide yet be unavailable to a particular account or temporarily disabled, so treat a model error as an access or availability issue before changing unrelated client settings.

3. Add the gateway to openKylin AI Assistant
The built-in assistant uses the model manager rather than a project-specific configuration file.
- Open the AI model manager from the AI Assistant or from Settings → General → AI Module Management.
- Choose Add model.
- Select Custom as the provider type.
- Enter one of the enabled model names from the table above.
- Paste the full API key, not the masked prefix shown on a later account page.
- Enter the complete OpenAI-compatible request URL:
https://llm-gateway.openkylin.top/v1. - Save the provider, move it to the desired priority position, and send a small test request from the assistant.
If the assistant reports that the model is unavailable, verify the spelling, account entitlement, and endpoint path. The /v1 suffix is part of the documented request URL for this client path; omitting it can send requests to the wrong route.
4. Configure Codex with the gateway
Codex requires a provider entry and an environment variable containing the API key. Keep the credential outside the project configuration.

wire_api = "responses"The context-window number in an example is a configuration value, not a guarantee that every gateway model supports that exact limit. Use the limit documented for the model and client version you are running. Set OPENKYLIN_API_KEY (or the variable name you selected) in the shell, user profile, or secret manager used to launch Codex. Do not put the actual key in the TOML file or commit the file with a key embedded in it.

Check the Codex connection
- Start a new shell or IDE session after setting the environment variable.
- Confirm that Codex is using the custom provider identifier, not a default provider with a different endpoint.
- Run a short request that does not require a large context window.
- If the response says the model is unknown, compare the model spelling with the gateway’s enabled-model list.
5. Configure Claude Code or another external client
External clients have their own naming and authentication conventions, but the same three values must agree: the gateway host, the API key, and an enabled model name.
Claude Code
The openKylin instructions specify the gateway host without the /v1 suffix as Claude Code’s base URL. Use the complete key in the environment variable expected by your Claude Code installation, and set the model to an enabled name such as deepseek-v4.1-flash. Do not copy the AI Assistant URL blindly into this field: the built-in assistant and Claude Code use different base-URL conventions.
If Claude Code returns an authentication error, check the variable name first, then confirm that the key was copied at issuance or reset. If it returns a model error, select a model enabled for your gateway account rather than changing the host.
Other OpenAI-compatible tools
- Use
https://llm-gateway.openkylin.top/v1when the client asks for an OpenAI-compatible API endpoint. - Choose Bearer-token authentication and supply the complete API key through the client’s secret or environment-variable mechanism.
- Use an exact gateway model identifier.
- Check whether the client expects chat-completions or Responses-style requests. The Codex example explicitly uses
wire_api = "responses"; another client may expose this choice under a different label.
6. Install Python tooling in Kylin IDE
For Python projects, install the kylin-python extension in Kylin IDE. The extension supports interpreter selection, running, debugging, and linting.
- Open the IDE’s Extensions view and install
kylin-python. - Open the Command Palette and run the Python interpreter-selection command.
- Choose the interpreter or virtual environment used by the project.
- Open a Python file and use the play button to run it, or press F5 to start debugging.
- Configure linting in the extension’s settings if the project uses a specific linter or rule set.
The openKylin ide-python project lists version 0.4.2, released on 2025-07-10. Extension compatibility can depend on the Kylin IDE build, so install the package version offered by your IDE’s extension source when the latest VSIX does not load.

Interpreter checks that prevent false AI-tool failures
- Run the project with the same interpreter selected in the IDE, not merely the system default.
- Open the integrated terminal and verify that dependencies are installed in that environment.
- Use the debugger after a successful run; an import failure is a Python-environment problem, not an AI-provider problem.
- Keep linting diagnostics separate from model responses so a code-style warning is not mistaken for a failed AI request.
7. Enable remote development with Remote-Dev
Remote-Dev adds SSH-based remote editing, compiling, running, and debugging to Kylin IDE, VS Code, or VSCodium. It is appropriate when the source tree, toolchain, or hardware is on another Linux machine.
Prepare the target machine
- Install and start an SSH server on the target.
- Verify that the account you will use can log in and can access the project directory.
- Check the SSH server configuration and ensure
AllowTcpForwarding yesis permitted. - Confirm that network policy, firewalls, and any jump host allow the SSH connection and forwarding required by the extension.
Install and connect
- Install the Remote-Dev extension from OpenVSX or the IDE’s extensions repository.
- Open the Remote-Dev connection command.
- Enter the target in
user@hostform. - Authenticate with the configured SSH method.
- Wait for the remote window to open, then select the project folder on the target machine.
Compilation, execution, and debugging occur in the remote window with the target machine’s compilers, runtimes, and files. The guide lists support for C/C++, Java, Python, Go, and JavaScript, so the remote workflow is broader than the Python-only extension.
Remote connection failures
- Authentication denied: test the same account with a normal SSH client and correct the key, password, or username before changing IDE settings.
- Connection opens but the remote window fails: check forwarding permissions, especially
AllowTcpForwarding yes, and verify that the target can create the extension’s remote service. - Code opens but cannot build: install or select the compiler and language runtime on the target; local packages are not automatically available remotely.
- Debugging stops immediately: confirm that the debug adapter and project dependencies are installed in the remote environment.
8. Choose the right development arrangement

These options can be combined. For example, you can use Remote-Dev to open a Python project on a server, select the remote interpreter, and use an AI client in the same development session. The model provider still has to be configured for the client that sends the request.
9. Local versus gateway-backed model execution
A model selected through the openKylin manager can be supplied by different providers, and the manager’s priority system decides which one is used when an application has not made an explicit choice. A gateway configuration sends requests to the hosted endpoint; it is therefore dependent on network access, account approval, model entitlement, and service availability.

The supplied openKylin guidance does not establish a universal hardware requirement or a fixed list of local models, so choose only providers actually displayed by your installation. Do not assume that a model name available through the gateway is installed locally.
10. Security and maintenance checklist
- Copy the full API key at issuance or reset; a masked prefix is not usable.
- Keep credentials in environment variables, a desktop secret store, or an enterprise secret manager.
- Do not commit Codex TOML, shell history, IDE settings, or screenshots containing a key.
- Use separate keys for personal, test, and shared environments when the service permits it.
- Reset a key immediately if it appears in a repository, log, ticket, or screen recording.
- Review provider priority after an IDE or system upgrade; a newly installed provider may change which model receives requests.
- For remote work, use an account with only the permissions required for the project and keep SSH forwarding enabled only where policy allows it.
11. Troubleshooting by symptom
“The model manager has no providers”
Check that the system includes kylin-ai-model-manager and that you are opening the global page at Settings → General → AI Module Management. If the package is absent, update through your openKylin distribution channel rather than copying configuration files from another release.
“401 Unauthorized” or “invalid API key”
Use the complete key issued or reset by the gateway, verify that the client is sending Bearer authentication, and confirm that the environment variable is visible to the process that launches the client. A prefix copied from the account page cannot authenticate.
“Model not found”
Compare the identifier character-for-character with the enabled list: qwen3.8-max, qwen3.7-max, qwen3.7-plus, deepseek-v4-pro, or deepseek-v4.1-flash. Then check whether your account is allowed to use that model. Do not add extra spaces, capitalization, or a provider-specific suffix.

Use the full https://llm-gateway.openkylin.top/v1 endpoint for the AI Assistant and OpenAI-compatible clients that require a versioned path. For Claude Code, follow its documented convention of using the gateway host without /v1. Mixing those two forms is a common cause of route errors.
“Codex ignores my provider”
Check that model_provider exactly matches the provider-table identifier, that base_url is inside the matching provider block, and that the environment variable is set before Codex starts. Keep wire_api = "responses" in the custom provider entry shown by the openKylin guide.
“Python runs with the wrong packages”
Reopen the Command Palette, select the project’s intended interpreter, and install dependencies into that environment. If the project is in a Remote-Dev window, repeat the selection on the remote machine; local and remote interpreters are separate.
“Remote-Dev cannot connect”
First test SSH outside the IDE. Then verify the user@host target, authentication method, server availability, and AllowTcpForwarding yes. Once the remote window opens, troubleshoot compilers, runtimes, and debugger adapters on the target rather than on the local desktop.
