As of October 16, 2026, there is no AMD-documented way to enable FSR 4 on a handheld gaming PC. AMD’s Adrenalin 25.3.1 release notes limit FSR 4 support to Radeon RX 9070 Series graphics cards and separately say that Adrenalin does not support handheld gaming devices. Handheld owners are directed to their device manufacturer for drivers.
That means a ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, or another Windows handheld with a Ryzen Z1-series integrated GPU does not meet the cited official FSR 4 support matrix. A missing FSR 4 switch in Adrenalin is therefore expected, not a setting you have overlooked. You can still use the game’s native FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 options, AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF), Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), and HYPR-RX where your handheld and game support them—but none of those features turns the handheld’s integrated graphics into an FSR 4 system.

The current compatibility answer
AMD’s published requirements make FSR 4 a Radeon RX 9000-series feature, specifically tied to the Radeon RX 9070 Series and its RDNA 4 graphics architecture. The same AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.3.1 release notes state that Adrenalin does not include support for handheld gaming devices and tell handheld users to obtain device-specific drivers from the OEM.
Those two statements matter together. Even if a handheld runs Windows, uses an AMD processor, or exposes an AMD graphics control panel, it is not automatically an FSR 4 platform. Most current handhelds use an integrated Radeon GPU inside a Ryzen Z1-series or similar APU. That is different from a desktop Radeon RX 9070 Series card, and the standard Adrenalin package is not the supported driver route for those handhelds.

| Question | Answer based on AMD’s cited documentation |
|---|---|
| Can I enable FSR 4 on a current ROG Ally or Ally X? | No supported procedure is documented. ASUS documents FSR 3/3.1, AFMF, RSR, and HYPR-RX instead. |
| Does a Ryzen Z1 Extreme automatically support FSR 4? | No. The APU’s AMD branding does not satisfy the documented Radeon RX 9070 Series requirement. |
| Should FSR 4 appear in Adrenalin on a handheld? | No. AMD says the cited Adrenalin release does not support handheld gaming devices. |
| Can AFMF, RSR, or HYPR-RX be renamed as FSR 4? | No. They are separate technologies with different rendering and frame-generation paths. |
There is also no cited official source identifying a currently supported handheld with FSR 4. Until AMD and a handheld OEM publish such a combination, claiming that a particular handheld supports FSR 4 would go beyond the available support information.
What the official FSR 4 workflow is designed for
AMD GPUOpen describes an upgrade path for supported Radeon RX 9000 systems. It is not a handheld workaround. The workflow assumes all of the following:
- A Radeon RX 9000 graphics card using the RDNA 4 generation; AMD’s release-note wording identifies the Radeon RX 9070 Series for FSR 4 support.
- AMD Software updated to a release that exposes the FSR 4 option on that supported graphics card.
- A game that already implements FSR 3.1.
- DirectX 12 as the game’s graphics API.
- A signed FSR 3.1 dynamic-link library supplied through the supported integration.
On a qualifying desktop or other supported RX 9000 system, GPUOpen’s sequence is to update AMD Software, enable FSR 3.1 in the game, and then turn on the FSR 4 toggle in AMD Software. Vulkan titles and games using a non-standard FSR 3.1 integration are excluded from that documented path.

The distinction is important: FSR 4 is an upgrade to a supported FSR 3.1 implementation, not a universal driver filter that can be applied to any game or GPU. A game running Vulkan, a title with a custom or unsigned FSR implementation, or a game without FSR 3.1 does not become eligible simply because a control panel is installed.
Why the FSR 4 toggle is missing on a handheld
The GPU does not match the published requirement
Handheld integrated graphics share memory with the APU and are not Radeon RX 9070 Series cards. A Ryzen Z1 Extreme can deliver strong performance for a handheld, but its product name does not make it an RX 9000 desktop GPU or an RDNA 4 RX 9070 implementation. Software cannot remove that hardware requirement.
The standard Adrenalin package is not the handheld driver path
AMD’s 25.3.1 release notes explicitly say that Adrenalin does not support handheld gaming devices. Handheld manufacturers package and validate their own drivers, firmware, power controls, hotkeys, and display behavior. Installing a generic desktop package can remove OEM-specific functions or create instability without adding FSR 4 support.

The game may fail the API and integration checks
Even on a supported RX 9000 computer, GPUOpen’s procedure requires DirectX 12 and a signed FSR 3.1 DLL. A Vulkan renderer or a non-standard FSR 3.1 integration does not qualify. Therefore, an absent FSR 4 option can reflect both platform support and game-integration requirements; on a current handheld, the platform limitation is already decisive.
What you can enable on a ROG Ally or Ally X today
ASUS’s Ally documentation covers three practical alternatives: native FSR 3/3.1 in games, AFMF through Armoury Crate SE, and HYPR-RX in AMD Software. These options can improve image reconstruction or perceived smoothness, but they should be labeled accurately in your settings and expectations.
| Feature | Where it is configured | What it does | Is it FSR 4? |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSR 3/3.1 upscaling and frame generation | Inside a compatible game’s Graphics or Display menu | Uses the game’s own FidelityFX integration for upscaling and, when offered, generated frames | No |
| AFMF | Armoury Crate SE > Settings > Performance > GPU Settings | Driver-level frame generation for supported games and display modes | No |
| HYPR-RX | AMD Software > Gaming > Graphics, where the OEM driver exposes it | Applies supported combinations such as RSR, FSR Quality in HYPR-Tuned games, or AFMF | No |
| RSR | Exposed through supported HYPR-RX profiles or the game/display configuration | Driver-level spatial upscaling when a game renders below the panel resolution | No |
How to use native FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 in a handheld game
This is the closest handheld equivalent to the first part of AMD’s supported FSR 4 workflow, but it remains FSR 3 or FSR 3.1. The exact menu wording varies by game.

- Install the handheld OEM driver. Use the support channel and driver package supplied for your model. Do not assume that replacing it with a generic desktop Adrenalin package will add FSR 4.
- Launch a game that explicitly lists AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution. Open the game’s Graphics, Display, or Video menu.
- Select the FSR mode. Choose the available FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 setting, then select a quality preset such as Quality, Balanced, or Performance according to the resolution and frame-rate target you need.
- Enable frame generation only if the game offers it. The switch may be labeled Frame Generation or similar. It is configured in the game, not created by HYPR-RX.
- Apply the settings and restart if requested. Some games reload their upscaler or frame-generation module only after a restart.
- Check latency and image stability. Frame generation works best when the game already produces a stable base frame rate. If controls feel delayed or fine details shimmer, lower the frame-generation expectation, raise the base frame rate, or disable the option.
ASUS’s guidance for Ally systems is to reach roughly 45–50 frames per second before enabling frame generation. That is an ASUS recommendation for FSR 3 and AFMF use, not an FSR 4 requirement and not a universal benchmark for every game.
How to enable AFMF through Armoury Crate SE
AFMF is a separate AMD frame-generation technology. On an Ally or Ally X, ASUS documents the following path for games that do not provide FSR 3 frame generation:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Armoury Crate SE.
- Open Settings.
- Select Performance.
- Open GPU Settings.
- Turn on AFMF, if the current OEM driver and device profile expose the option.
- Run the game in fullscreen or borderless fullscreen, as ASUS recommends for AFMF.
- Set a frame-rate target that leaves the game with a stable base rate. ASUS suggests approximately 45–50 FPS before generated frames are added.
AFMF can increase the number shown by an on-screen counter, but generated frames do not replace the responsiveness of the underlying rendered frames. A low or erratic base rate can still feel uneven. Use the handheld’s power profile, resolution, and in-game quality settings to stabilize the base output first.

How HYPR-RX fits into the handheld setup
On systems where the OEM driver exposes it, open AMD Software, choose Gaming, then Graphics, and enable HYPR-RX. ASUS says HYPR-RX can select RSR or FSR Quality in HYPR-Tuned games, or AFMF, depending on the title and profile.
HYPR-RX is an automation layer for supported Radeon features. It is not the FSR 4 model and does not convert FSR 3 into FSR 4. ASUS also states that HYPR-RX does not itself enable FSR 3 frame generation; that feature must be enabled in the game’s own graphics menu. If a game has a native FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 frame-generation switch, configure it there even when HYPR-RX is enabled.
What not to do when troubleshooting
- Do not treat FSR 3 as FSR 4. The names are related but the versions have different support requirements and image-generation paths.
- Do not treat AFMF as FSR 4. AFMF generates frames at the driver level; it is not the FSR 4 upscaler.
- Do not treat RSR as FSR 4. RSR is driver-level spatial upscaling and does not provide the same game-integrated pipeline.
- Do not treat HYPR-RX as FSR 4. HYPR-RX selects combinations of supported features; it does not change the GPU architecture or add an FSR 4 implementation.
- Do not install generic driver utilities as a supposed unlock. AMD directs handheld users to OEM-specific drivers, and unsupported driver replacement can break power management or device features without satisfying FSR 4 requirements.
- Do not count an external GPU as FSR 4 on the handheld’s integrated graphics. The documented support requirement applies to the graphics processor actually running the supported path. Connecting other hardware does not make the handheld APU itself an FSR 4 device.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No FSR 4 option in AMD Software | The handheld is outside the cited Adrenalin and RX 9070 support matrix. | Use the OEM driver and configure FSR 3/3.1, AFMF, RSR, or HYPR-RX where available. |
| FSR appears in the game but frame generation does not | The title may implement upscaling without FSR 3 frame generation, or the feature may require a compatible API and driver. | Check the game’s own documentation and test its native options; do not substitute HYPR-RX for the in-game frame-generation switch. |
| AFMF switch is absent | The current OEM driver, game profile, display mode, or device firmware may not expose the feature. | Update through the handheld manufacturer, use fullscreen or borderless fullscreen, and verify Armoury Crate SE’s Performance > GPU Settings path. |
| Image looks soft after enabling RSR or FSR | The selected render resolution or quality preset is too aggressive for the panel and viewing distance. | Move from Performance to Balanced or Quality, or raise the internal render resolution while checking the base frame rate. |
| Controls feel delayed with generated frames | The base frame rate is too low or unstable. | Reduce detail, resolution, or other GPU-heavy settings until the base rate is steadier; ASUS’s approximate 45–50 FPS target is a useful starting point for its documented FSR 3/AFMF guidance. |
| A desktop guide says to enable FSR 4 after updating Adrenalin | That guide may describe the supported Radeon RX 9000 desktop workflow, not a handheld. | Confirm the GPU model, OEM driver policy, DirectX 12 requirement, and signed FSR 3.1 integration before applying the instructions. |
How to evaluate a future FSR 4 handheld
If AMD or a handheld manufacturer later announces official FSR 4 support, verify the complete platform rather than relying on a product name or a screenshot of a graphics menu. These are the checks that determine whether the claim matches AMD’s documented path.
- GPU architecture: Confirm that the handheld’s graphics processor is an RDNA 4 Radeon RX 9000 implementation, not merely an older integrated Radeon GPU with an AMD processor name.
- OEM driver availability: Check that the manufacturer publishes a driver package that explicitly supports the handheld and FSR 4. AMD’s cited Adrenalin notes say handheld devices require OEM-specific drivers.
- Windows and driver version: Record the supported Windows edition and exact driver release. Feature availability can depend on the OEM package rather than the newest generic desktop installer.
- Game API: Confirm that the game runs through DirectX 12. GPUOpen’s documented FSR 4 upgrade path excludes Vulkan.
- FSR 3.1 integration: The game must use a signed FSR 3.1 DLL and a supported integration. A custom or non-standard implementation does not qualify for the described toggle.
- Power profile: Check the wattage mode used for testing. A handheld may expose different performance and battery behavior at each power limit, even when the graphics feature is available.
- Display refresh rate: Match the generated-frame output to the panel’s refresh rate and variable-refresh behavior. A feature being enabled does not guarantee that every generated frame can be displayed usefully.
Until those details are published by AMD and the OEM, treat claims of “FSR 4 on a handheld” as unverified rather than assuming that an AMD control panel or a frame-rate increase proves compatibility.
Why a supported handheld procedure cannot be supplied yet
The requested procedure depends on a platform that the cited official material does not currently identify. AMD’s own statements establish an RX 9070 Series requirement for FSR 4 and exclude handheld devices from the referenced Adrenalin package. GPUOpen’s later workflow adds DirectX 12, signed FSR 3.1, and a standard integration as further conditions.
Consequently, the honest handheld instructions stop at the features the OEM documents: use native FSR 3/3.1 in compatible games, configure AFMF through Armoury Crate SE when needed, and use HYPR-RX or RSR where the OEM driver provides them. Calling any of those settings FSR 4 would give the wrong answer to owners trying to identify a supported feature.
