To enable a custom map on a Conan Exiles dedicated server, install the map’s .pak file in ConanSandbox/Mods/, list that filename in ConanSandbox/Mods/modlist.txt, restart the server, and make every player install and activate the identical map and dependency mods in the identical order. If players rely on automatic downloads, the server’s mod-download port and firewall must also be configured.

The procedure works for both a self-hosted dedicated server and a managed host panel. The exact folders around ConanSandbox vary by installation, but the two items inside that directory— the map archive and the ordered mod list—are the pieces that determine whether the server can load the map.

What a modded map is on a Conan Exiles server
Funcom defines a Conan Exiles mod as a single .pak archive containing modified game assets and, optionally, new assets. A custom-map mod uses that same package format. Enabling the map is therefore not a separate map-file conversion: the server loads the archive as a mod, and the map author’s package supplies the world content.
There are two sides to the setup:
- Server side: the dedicated server must have the correct
.pakfile inConanSandbox/Mods/and its exact filename inmodlist.txt. - Player side: each player must subscribe to or otherwise install the same map and any dependencies, then enable and order them in the game’s Mods screen.
A mismatch on either side can stop a connection or cause the map to fail while loading. The server and clients must use compatible versions and the same load order; a map author’s instructions take precedence over any generic ordering example.

Decide how you will distribute and manage the map
Before copying files, choose the distribution method and who will maintain the server. A map may come from Steam Workshop or from the author as an external .pak. You can maintain the files yourself or use a managed Conan Exiles host whose panel automates some of the copying and list editing.

Version selection, file integrity and how players obtain the same package |
Do not assume that a map obtained outside Workshop can be substituted for a Workshop version, or that a panel’s installation wizard knows the correct order for every map. A Host Havoc example, for instance, demonstrates a panel workflow that installs a Workshop custom map and inserts it at a specified position; the map author’s documentation remains the authority for your map.
Prepare the server before installing
Check game-build compatibility
Choose a map that supports the Conan Exiles server build you are running. The technical manual cited for this procedure was published in 2020, while the game, dedicated-server software and host panels can change. Check the current build and the map author’s compatibility notes immediately before installation. A package built for a different game version may appear in the folder but still fail during startup or world loading.
Identify every required package
Some maps depend on other mods. Record the map package and each dependency exactly as supplied by the author. The dependency files belong in the same server Mods directory and must all appear in the ordered list. On the player side, every dependency must also be installed and enabled.
Back up the current save
Back up the server save before replacing an active map, changing the order of a live mod set or removing a package. The available documentation does not promise a universal rollback procedure, so preserve a known-good copy and follow the map author’s migration instructions. A backup is especially important when the new map changes world data rather than merely adding cosmetic assets.
Install the map on a dedicated server
1. Obtain the package
Subscribe to the map in Steam Workshop or download the package from the map author’s distribution. You need the actual .pak archive that the dedicated server can load. If the author supplies a zip or another container, extract it according to the author’s instructions so that the final file placed on the server is the map’s .pak.

Do not rename the archive casually. The filename is used again, character for character, in modlist.txt. A spelling change, missing extension or different capitalization can leave the server unable to resolve the entry.
2. Copy the .pak into ConanSandbox/Mods/
Open the dedicated server installation and locate its ConanSandbox/Mods/ directory. Copy the map’s .pak into that folder. For a map with dependencies, copy each required dependency archive there as well.
The Funcom technical manual describes the .pak archive and documents this dedicated-server location. If you use a control panel instead of direct file access, use its file manager or mod installer to place the package in the equivalent ConanSandbox/Mods/ directory, then verify the resulting filename on disk.
3. Create or edit modlist.txt
In the same ConanSandbox/Mods/ directory, create modlist.txt if it does not exist, or edit the existing file. Put one mod filename on each line, including the .pak extension. The line must match the file on disk exactly.

RequiredDependency.pakKeep the intended load order. A map author may require a dependency before the map, or may specify a particular position among your existing mods. Do not infer an order from the alphabetical position of filenames. The client’s mod list can be copied to the dedicated server to reduce typing errors, but inspect it before replacing a working server list so that unrelated entries are not removed.
4. Save the file and restart the server
Stop the dedicated server cleanly, save the edited list, and start it again. Changing the archive or modlist.txt while the process is running does not replace the already-loaded mod set. A managed panel may perform the copy and list update for you, but it still needs a restart or reload operation that actually starts the server with the new order.

Watch the startup output for the map package and any dependency errors. If the process stops before the world is available, return to the filename and order checks rather than repeatedly restarting with the same list.
Set up every player’s client
Install the same packages
Each player must subscribe to or otherwise install the same custom map and dependency mods. Steam players can enable and reorder mods from the in-game Mods screen. Have players finish installation before they attempt to join; a server cannot make an incompatible local package compatible.

Match the server’s order
In the Mods screen, enable the map and dependencies in the same order used by the server. The order is part of the configuration, not merely a visual preference. If the map author publishes a complete list, use it as the reference for both sides. Players who already have a large mod collection should compare the complete active list rather than assuming the new map can be placed at the end.
Account for Workshop updates
A Workshop subscription can update a package independently of the server’s copy. Before troubleshooting a failed join, compare the installed client version with the version currently on the server and with the map author’s stated compatibility. If a host panel downloaded a newer archive while a player still has an older local copy, the two installations are not equivalent even when the filename is identical.
Configure automatic mod downloads
Some servers allow clients to download required mods automatically. Automatic delivery does not remove the need for a correct server package and mod list; it only changes how a player obtains the files.

ModFileDownload.DownloadPortOffset=...The offset controls the mod-download port used by the server. The exact value depends on your server configuration, so use the value configured for your instance rather than copying an arbitrary number. Open the server’s firewall for the resulting download port and confirm that any host-level firewall, router rule or provider network policy allows the traffic.
If normal gameplay connections work but automatic mod delivery does not, test the download path separately. A blocked download port can make players appear to have a map mismatch even though the game server itself is reachable. Players can still install the same packages manually when the map’s distribution method permits it.
Verify the installation before inviting players
- Confirm that each required
.pakexists inConanSandbox/Mods/. - Open
modlist.txtand compare every line with the corresponding on-disk filename, including the extension. - Compare the server order with the order required by the map author.
- Restart the dedicated server after the final file and list change.
- Use a test account or a small group of players who have installed the same versions and order.
- Connect, load into the custom world, travel or perform the map-specific action that confirms the map—not just the server’s connection screen—is active.
This sequence separates file and ordering errors from player download problems. If the server cannot start with the package, work on the server files first. If the server starts but only some players fail, compare those clients’ versions, dependencies and order.

The server starts, but the map is not active
- Check that the map archive is in
ConanSandbox/Mods/, not in a parent folder or an extra extracted subfolder. - Check that its exact filename appears on one line in
modlist.txt. - Confirm that the server was restarted after the copy and list edit.
- Review the map author’s required position and dependencies; a package in the wrong order may load differently from the author’s supported configuration.
The server refuses to start or reports a mod error
- Compare the server build with the map’s supported build.
- Look for a missing dependency or a dependency listed after the package that requires it.
- Remove accidental duplicate or obsolete entries from the list, then restore the documented order.
- Re-copy the archive from a trusted Workshop or author distribution if the file may be incomplete.
Players receive a mismatch or cannot join
- Compare the client and server mod versions, not only their filenames.
- Have the player enable every required package in the Mods screen.
- Compare the complete load order character by character with the server’s intended order.
- Check whether the player’s Workshop installation updated after the server package was installed.
Funcom’s documentation and Conan modding guidance both identify version and order mismatches as connection or map-loading causes. Treat the player’s active list as a configuration file that must match the server, rather than asking the player to keep reconnecting.
Automatic downloads fail while manual installation works
- Read the configured
ModFileDownload.DownloadPortOffsetvalue inEngine.ini. - Calculate which download port that setting produces for your server instance.
- Allow that port through the server firewall and any upstream firewall or provider rule.
- Restart the server after changing the setting, then test with a client that does not already have the package.
If the port is open but downloads still fail, use the map author’s or host provider’s current networking instructions; the 2020 technical manual cannot guarantee behavior for every later server build or hosting platform.
A panel installation puts the map in the wrong place
Panel automation is convenient but map-specific. Inspect the generated modlist.txt and the files in the panel’s equivalent of ConanSandbox/Mods/. If the map author requires a defined position, move the entry to that position using the panel’s list editor or file manager, then restart. Do not assume that the position used by one provider example, such as the documented Savage Wilds workflow, applies to another map.
Changing maps or removing the mod safely
Replacing an active map is more disruptive than adding a cosmetic mod because the saved world may contain references to the previous map. Make a separate backup before changing the active list. Record the old .pak files and their order so you can reconstruct the prior configuration if the new map does not load.

- Stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the save and the current
ConanSandbox/Mods/modlist.txt. - Follow the map author’s instructions for migration or removal.
- Remove or replace only the packages that the instructions identify.
- Write the new ordered list, verify filenames, and start the server.
- Test world loading before allowing the full player group to reconnect.
There is no universal rollback guarantee for every custom map, so retain the backup until the new world has been tested and the author’s migration path is known to work for your build.
Maintenance after the map is live
Track versions deliberately
Keep a short record of the server build, map version, dependency versions and the date of each update. When a Workshop item changes, decide whether to update the server immediately or pin the server and clients to a known-compatible combination according to the author’s guidance. Updating only one side creates the mismatch that prevents joining.
Keep the order documented
Save a copy of the working modlist.txt with your backup. If a panel rebuilds the server or a new administrator edits the list, the saved order provides a known-good reference without relying on memory.
Recheck networking after host changes
A change of host, server port, firewall policy or provider plan can affect automatic mod downloads even when ordinary player connections continue to work. Recheck the Engine.ini download setting and firewall rule whenever the network environment changes.

Self-hosting gives you direct control of the archive, list and firewall, but you are responsible for every file transfer, backup and restart. Managed hosting can shorten installation through a panel and may automate Workshop downloads and list placement, while still requiring you to verify the generated order and understand the provider’s networking controls.
Choose manual control when you need direct access to several custom packages, want to preserve a precise configuration, or are comfortable maintaining firewall and backup procedures. Choose a managed panel when automated file handling and a simpler restart workflow matter more than low-level control. In either case, the compatibility contract is the same: the server and every client need the same supported package versions and load order.
