“AC Wi-Fi” means 802.11ac, also called Wi-Fi 5. There is no universal Windows switch for it: your router and your computer’s wireless adapter must both support the standard. On many routers, enabling the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band and a compatible wireless mode is the key step; the exact controls depend on the router model.
What you need to enable AC Wi-Fi
- A router or access point that supports 802.11ac and has a 5 GHz radio.
- A computer or other client with a wireless adapter that supports the network’s frequency and 802.11ac.
- A router configuration that allows 802.11ac, often through an automatic or mixed wireless mode.
Both ends matter. Changing a router setting cannot add AC capability to an older client adapter, and a compatible computer cannot connect to a 5 GHz network if the router is not broadcasting that band. Microsoft lists 802.11ac as a wireless networking technology and explains that a computer needs a wireless network adapter to connect (Microsoft: Setting up a wireless network in Windows).

Enable 5 GHz and a compatible mode on the router
- Identify the router model. Check its label or administration interface, then find the manufacturer’s manual or support page for that exact model. Router changes are usually made by signing in to the access point, often through a browser; Microsoft advises consulting the access-point documentation for its settings (Microsoft: Wi-Fi and your home layout).
- Find the wireless controls. Depending on the router, look for settings labeled Wireless, Wi-Fi, Radio, or Band. These are examples, not universal menu names.
- Turn on the 5 GHz radio and allow 802.11ac. If the router offers a wireless-mode setting, choose one that permits 802.11ac, such as a compatible automatic or mixed mode. Labels and options differ by model; do not disable older modes unless you have a specific reason.
- Identify the 5 GHz network for testing. If the router broadcasts separate names (SSIDs) for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, connect to the 5 GHz name. Some routers combine both bands under one name and select a band automatically, so you may not see a separate 5 GHz network.
- Keep the network protected. Prefer WPA3 if both the router and PC support it. Microsoft explains how Windows reports Wi-Fi networks that do not use secure settings (Microsoft: Wi-Fi network not secure in Windows).
Check the Windows Wi-Fi adapter
- Turn on Wi-Fi in Windows and check for any physical wireless switch on the computer.
- Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and confirm that the wireless adapter is enabled.
- Open the adapter’s Properties and look for a setting named Wireless Mode or Band. If present, ensure it allows the frequency used by your network and a mode compatible with 802.11ac. Not every adapter exposes the same settings.
- Install available driver updates through Windows Update or the computer or adapter manufacturer. Microsoft notes that an adapter may not support the network’s frequency, or its driver settings may prevent it from using that band (Microsoft: Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows).
Should you choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?
These are general tendencies, not guarantees for every router, device, or home. Microsoft’s guidance describes the trade-offs this way (Microsoft: Wi-Fi and your home layout):
| Factor | 2.4 GHz | 5 GHz |
|---|---|---|
| Throughput | Generally slower | Generally faster |
| Range and obstacles | Generally reaches farther and passes through walls better | Generally has shorter range and is more affected by obstacles |
| Channel crowding | Fewer non-overlapping channels and often more congestion | More non-overlapping channels, so channel overlap is less of an issue |
| Compatibility | More widely supported, including by many IoT devices | Requires a compatible router and client |
Use 5 GHz when the client is compatible and is close enough to receive a strong signal. A device farther away or behind several walls may work better on 2.4 GHz. A faster Wi-Fi link also does not increase the speed of your broadband plan.

Test whether the change helped
- At a fixed location, run an internet speed test before changing settings and note the result.
- After enabling 5 GHz, connect to that band if it has a separate SSID and repeat the test from the same location under similar conditions.
- If range matters, test at another location too. Distance, walls, congestion, client capability, and the broadband connection can all affect the result.
- If the connection remains slow, test close to the router, reduce obstructions, and compare with another device. If multiple devices are slow, the issue may not be specific to the computer’s Wi-Fi adapter.
Microsoft recommends establishing a speed-test baseline and testing again after network changes; its guidance also notes that home layout affects Wi-Fi performance (Microsoft: Wi-Fi and your home layout).

The 5 GHz network does not appear
- Confirm in the router’s settings that its 5 GHz radio is enabled and broadcasting.
- Check whether the client adapter supports 5 GHz and whether its Band or Wireless Mode setting allows it.
- Update the adapter driver, then check for the network again.
- If the router combines bands under one SSID, a separate 5 GHz name may not be available; the router may choose the band automatically.
Wi-Fi is missing on the Windows PC
Check the Windows Wi-Fi control and any physical wireless switch, then verify in Device Manager that the wireless adapter is enabled. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also covers restarting WLAN AutoConfig and enabling a disabled adapter (Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows).

The router setting is unclear
Use the instructions for the exact router model rather than guessing at a menu path. The names and availability of wireless-mode and band controls vary between manufacturers and models.

Test near the router, reduce obstacles, and compare another device. If the result does not improve when the Wi-Fi connection is stronger, the limiting factor may be the broadband service, congestion, or the client’s capabilities rather than the Wi-Fi standard alone.
