How to Enable 4K, HDR, and 120Hz Over HDMI

To enable 4K, HDR, and a high refresh rate such as 120Hz over HDMI, every part of the signal path must support the same combined mode: the source device and its HDMI output, the display’s specific HDMI input, the cable, and the operating-system or device settings. HDMI 2.1 or a “4K” label alone does not guarantee 4K HDR at 120Hz.

Start by checking the exact specifications for both devices. Then connect them directly with an appropriately certified cable, select 4K and the desired refresh rate, enable HDR, and check the display’s enhanced-bandwidth or gaming-input setting. If an option is missing, troubleshoot the hardware path before treating it as a software problem.

What must support 4K, HDR, and 120Hz

Resolution, refresh rate, and HDR are separate capabilities. A source may output 4K at 60Hz, or HDR at a reduced resolution, without supporting 4K HDR at 120Hz. Confirm the complete combination in the source and display specifications rather than checking only a port version number.

  • Source: A PC graphics card, game console, media player, or other source must be able to generate 4K at the selected refresh rate and HDR format.
  • Source HDMI output: The physical output must provide enough bandwidth for that mode.
  • Display input: TVs and monitors can have different capabilities on different HDMI sockets. One input may accept 4K120 while another is limited to 4K60.
  • Cable: The cable must be certified for the required bandwidth and in good condition.
  • Software and input modes: Windows, a console menu, and the display may each require a separate setting.

Think of the connection as a chain. The requested mode is available only when every link agrees on it. For example, a 4K120-capable graphics card connected to a 4K60-only television input will negotiate no higher than 4K60. A capable television connected through a switch that passes only 4K60 has the same limitation. HDR can fail independently even when resolution and refresh rate work.

If a receiver, dock, switch, adapter, or soundbar sits between the source and display, it becomes another compatibility link. For initial setup, bypass intermediaries and connect the source directly to the display.

HDMI Licensing Administrator’s HDMI 2.1b overview describes bandwidth up to 48Gbps and support for formats including 4K at 120Hz. That is a specification capability, not a promise that every product carrying an HDMI 2.1 label implements every feature.

Understand the combinations you are actually choosing

Target mode What it proves What it does not prove
4K at 60Hz The path can carry 3840×2160 at 60Hz. It does not prove 120Hz or HDR.
4K HDR at 60Hz The source, display, cable, and settings support HDR at that rate. It does not prove 4K HDR at 120Hz.
4K at 120Hz The path can carry the higher refresh rate. It does not prove that HDR is available at the same time.
4K HDR at 120Hz The entire chain supports the combined target. It does not mean every HDMI socket or intermediary supports it.

When a specification lists features on separate lines, treat that as separate claims. Look for an explicit resolution-plus-refresh-rate-plus-HDR combination whenever possible.

Check the specifications before changing settings

Verify the source

Look for a specification that explicitly combines 4K (usually 3840×2160), the required refresh rate, and HDR. On a PC, check the graphics processor and the exact HDMI output. On a console or media player, check its video-output table and the supported HDR formats.

Do not assume that a graphics card’s other outputs describe its HDMI output. Likewise, a laptop may have different capabilities on its built-in panel, USB-C video output, and HDMI socket. Confirm which physical port is connected and what that port supports.

Verify the display input

Read the display manual or its input specifications. Look for wording such as 4K120, 2160p at 120Hz, HDR, 10-bit color, enhanced HDMI, deep color, UHD color, or a gaming mode. Do not assume that all HDMI inputs on the same display are identical.

Some televisions identify one socket as the high-bandwidth or gaming input. Some monitors expose the feature only after an input option is enabled. Record the exact socket number and menu name before moving the cable; this makes later troubleshooting much easier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check intermediaries

An AV receiver, switch, capture device, dock, or adapter must pass the entire target mode. A device that advertises “4K” may support only 4K60, may not pass HDR, or may expose different limits on different ports. If its specifications do not state the combined resolution, refresh rate, and HDR support, connect the source directly while diagnosing the problem.

Choose the right HDMI cable

Cable labels describe certification and intended bandwidth; they do not upgrade a source or display. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s cable guidance distinguishes the following categories:

Cable category Published capability Typical fit
Premium High Speed HDMI Certified for up to 18Gbps Some 4K at 60Hz and HDR configurations, when both devices support them
Ultra High Speed HDMI Certified for up to 48Gbps High-bandwidth formats including 4K at 120Hz

For a 4K120 setup, use a certified Ultra High Speed cable and look for the official certification label on the packaging or cable. A certified Premium High Speed cable may be sufficient for a compatible 4K60/HDR configuration. “High speed,” “8K,” or “gaming” printed by itself is not the same as an official certification.

Keep the cable as short and direct as practical during testing. Do not add couplers, extension leads, or wall plates until the target mode is stable. A damaged connector can cause flicker or intermittent handshakes even when the cable category is correct.

Replace a cable only when the existing one lacks the required certification, is damaged, or produces intermittent signal loss; a new cable cannot create a mode that the hardware does not support. When comparing purchases, compare certification and the needed mode rather than price or decorative features. There is no benefit in paying for a higher category if the source and display are both limited to 4K60, but an Ultra High Speed cable is the appropriate starting point for a 4K120-oriented path.

Connect directly and establish a baseline

  1. Turn off or place the source and display in standby.
  2. Connect the source’s specified HDMI output directly to the display input rated for the target mode.
  3. Use a certified cable suited to the target bandwidth.
  4. Turn on the display, select that HDMI input, and then start the source.
  5. Check the display’s information panel, if available, to see the incoming resolution, refresh rate, and HDR status.

This baseline removes uncertainty from receivers, docks, switches, and adapters. Once direct operation is confirmed, add one intermediary at a time and test again. If the mode disappears after adding a device, that device or its configuration is the likely limiting link.

Windows 10 and 11: set resolution and refresh rate

Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. The available choices depend on the connected hardware.

  1. Connect the source directly to the display and turn on the display.
  2. Open Settings > System > Display.
  3. If more than one screen is listed, select the HDMI-connected display.
  4. Open Advanced display.
  5. Use the display selector if necessary, then open the refresh-rate menu and choose the highest rate that the hardware exposes. Select 120Hz or 119.88Hz when that is the available label for a 120Hz mode.
  6. Return to Settings > System > Display and confirm the resolution is 3840×2160 (4K) if that is the target mode.

Windows cannot display a refresh-rate option that the source, input, cable, driver, or display has not negotiated. If 120Hz is absent, do not force an unrelated custom mode until the physical compatibility chain is verified. A listed 120Hz option also does not prove that HDR is active; verify HDR separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If changing the rate causes a blank screen, wait for Windows to revert or select a known-working rate such as 60Hz. Then check the cable, input, and display mode before trying again.

Turn on HDR in Windows

  1. Open Settings > System > Display and select the HDR-capable HDMI display.
  2. Open the HDR section.
  3. Turn on Use HDR when Windows reports that HDR is supported.
  4. Play HDR content on the display selected in Windows and check the display’s on-screen information panel, if it provides one.

Microsoft documents HDR settings at HDR settings in Windows and explains the feature at What is HDR in Windows?. The HDR switch applies to the selected display, so changing it while another monitor is selected will not configure the HDMI screen.

Avoid duplicated-desktop mode

Windows may duplicate the desktop on an external display by default. Microsoft says HDR is not supported in that configuration and recommends extending the desktop instead. Press Windows key + P and choose Extend, or select the equivalent multiple-display option in Settings > System > Display. Then select the external HDR display and enable Use HDR.

After extending, place the application or video window on the HDR display. A screen can be HDR-capable while content is still playing on a different, non-HDR panel.

Enable HDR video streaming separately

Streaming video can have its own control. In the selected display’s HDR settings, turn on HDR video streaming when that option appears. Start playback on the display that Windows identifies as HDR-optimized. Microsoft’s streaming-specific instructions are at Stream HDR video on Windows.

This option concerns video playback; it does not make games or the Windows desktop HDR automatically. Those uses still depend on the display’s HDR setting and the application’s own support.

Check the display’s HDMI input mode

Manufacturers use different names and menu locations for high-bandwidth input settings. A television may call the option enhanced HDMI, HDMI signal format, deep color, or UHD color. A monitor may place it under an input, gaming, or system menu. Enable the enhanced or high-bandwidth mode only on the socket carrying the source, then consult the model’s manual for the exact path.

Some displays switch to a limited compatibility mode after a signal error or factory reset. Re-select the correct HDMI input, power-cycle both devices, and verify the input setting again. Do not assume a universal menu path: labels vary by model and firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change only one display option at a time. If enabling an enhanced mode makes the screen blank, return to the previous setting, establish a 4K60 baseline, and then retry with a direct connection and the certified cable.

Console and non-Windows sources

On consoles and other sources, open the video or display settings and select 4K output, the desired refresh rate, and HDR when the device reports that the display supports them. Exact menu names differ by product and are not established universally here, so use the source manufacturer’s manual. The same physical checks still apply: source capability, display input capability, cable certification, and any intermediary device.

If the source offers an automatic test, run it after connecting directly. An automatic result of 4K60 does not prove that 4K120 is possible; it may reflect the display input, cable, or current intermediary rather than the source’s maximum capability. Run the test again after selecting the display’s enhanced input mode and changing to the certified cable.

  1. Confirm the selected display. In Windows, select the HDMI display rather than the laptop panel or another monitor before opening Advanced display or HDR settings.
  2. Check the HDMI socket. Move the cable to the display input specified for 4K120 or enhanced bandwidth. Re-select that input in the display menu.
  3. Connect directly. Remove a receiver, dock, switch, adapter, or capture device temporarily.
  4. Reseat the cable. Unplug both ends, inspect for damage, reconnect firmly, and test with a certified cable suited to the target mode.
  5. Update graphics drivers. Use Windows Update or the PC manufacturer’s support page. Microsoft advises keeping graphics drivers current for HDR operation.
  6. Lower the mode temporarily. Try 4K at 60Hz, then a lower resolution at 120Hz. If one works and the other does not, the result helps isolate a bandwidth or combined-mode limitation. Microsoft lists lowering refresh rate or resolution as a workaround for some HDMI color issues.
  7. Disable duplication. Extend the desktop and test HDR again.
  8. Recheck specifications. Confirm that the exact source output and display input—not merely the product family or HDMI version—support the desired combination.

Black screen, flicker, or intermittent signal

  • Return temporarily to 4K60 or a lower resolution.
  • Replace an uncertified, excessively long, or suspect cable with a certified cable for the target bandwidth.
  • Test another HDMI input explicitly rated for the mode.
  • Remove intermediary equipment and test a direct connection.
  • Power-cycle the source and display after changing the input’s enhanced-bandwidth setting.
  • Reconnect the cable firmly at both ends and inspect the connectors for visible damage.

4K works but HDR is missing

  • Check that HDR is enabled on the display’s selected input.
  • In Windows, select the external display and turn on Use HDR.
  • Use Extend instead of duplicate display mode.
  • For streamed video, enable HDR video streaming and play it on the HDR display.
  • Update the graphics driver and verify that the source supports the display’s HDR format.
  • Test the display’s enhanced, deep-color, or UHD-color input setting.

HDR works but 120Hz is missing

Check whether the display supports HDR and 120Hz simultaneously at 4K. Many specifications list these features separately. Confirm the output port, input socket, cable category, and any intermediary’s pass-through capability. If 4K120 is not supported, choose the highest supported combination, such as 4K HDR at 60Hz or a lower resolution at 120Hz.

4K120 works but HDR is unreliable

First verify that the source and display support HDR at 4K120, not merely at 4K60. Recheck the display’s enhanced input mode, update the graphics driver, and test with a direct connection. If lowering the refresh rate restores stable HDR, the result points to a combined bandwidth or device-implementation limit rather than a missing Windows checkbox.

How to compare equipment for this setup

Compare the exact mode, not a marketing label. The useful checklist is:

Item What to verify
Source device 4K resolution, target refresh rate, HDR format, and exact HDMI output
Display 4K HDR at the target refresh rate on the specific HDMI input
Cable Official Premium High Speed certification for suitable 4K60/HDR use, or Ultra High Speed certification for 4K120-oriented use
Intermediary Pass-through of the complete resolution-plus-refresh-rate-plus-HDR combination
Software Current graphics driver and enabled HDR, streaming, and display-mode settings

“HDMI 2.1” and “4K ready” are not sufficient purchasing criteria by themselves. Ask whether the exact port supports 3840×2160 at the desired refresh rate with HDR enabled. For a cable purchase, certification is the meaningful comparison: Premium High Speed is rated up to 18Gbps, while Ultra High Speed is rated up to 48Gbps and covers 4K120 use cases.

Buy a replacement only when a component is demonstrably limiting the path. If the source output is limited to 4K60, spending more on a cable or display input will not produce 4K120. If a switch or receiver is the limiting link, bypassing it may solve the issue without replacing the source or display. No streaming service, driver utility, or software toggle can add HDMI bandwidth that the hardware lacks.

When the requested mode is impossible

A setting cannot add missing hardware bandwidth. If the source output or display input is limited to 4K60, no Windows toggle or cable can turn it into 4K120. Likewise, an HDR-capable display cannot receive HDR from a source that does not output it. Use the highest supported combination, replace only the limiting component, or remove an intermediary that does not pass the mode.

Document the highest stable result for each direct connection—for example, 4K HDR at 60Hz or 1440p at 120Hz. That gives you a clear baseline when deciding whether a new source, display, cable, or intermediary is actually necessary.

Quick verification checklist

  • Source specifications list the desired resolution, refresh rate, and HDR format together.
  • The connected HDMI output is the one rated for that mode.
  • The display’s specific HDMI input is rated for the same combination.
  • The cable carries the official Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed certification appropriate to the target.
  • Any receiver, dock, switch, adapter, or soundbar passes the full combination, or has been bypassed for testing.
  • Windows is using the correct display, with the desired resolution and refresh rate selected.
  • Windows HDR and, where applicable, HDR video streaming are enabled.
  • The desktop is extended rather than duplicated for external HDR.
  • The display’s enhanced-bandwidth, deep-color, UHD-color, or gaming-input option is enabled as required.
  • Graphics drivers are current and the display reports the expected incoming signal.

Why does Windows show HDR as unavailable?

Select the external display under Settings > System > Display, avoid duplicate-desktop mode by choosing Extend, update the graphics driver, enable the display’s enhanced input mode, and verify that the source, input, cable, and display all support HDR.

Can a cable upgrade fix a monitor limited to 60Hz?

Only if the existing cable is the limiting link and the source and display already support the higher mode. A certified cable cannot add 120Hz capability to hardware limited to 60Hz.

Why can I select 4K but not 120Hz?

The source output, display input, intermediary, or cable may be limited to 4K60. Check the exact port specifications, use the display’s 4K120-rated input, connect directly, and test with a certified Ultra High Speed cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does HDR work at 60Hz but not at 120Hz?

The devices may support HDR and 120Hz separately but not the combined 4K HDR 120Hz mode. Verify the combined specification, enhanced input setting, cable certification, graphics driver, and any intermediary’s pass-through capability.

Does Windows duplicate mode support HDR?

Microsoft says HDR is not supported when Windows duplicates the desktop to an external display. Choose Extend, select the external HDR display, and enable Use HDR for that display.

Do I need to replace my HDMI cable immediately?

No. Replace it when it lacks the certification required for your target mode, is damaged, or causes signal loss. A new cable cannot overcome a source or display that lacks the necessary capability.

Can a receiver, dock, or switch prevent 4K120?

Yes. Every intermediary must pass the complete resolution, refresh-rate, and HDR combination. Bypass it and test a direct source-to-display connection before replacing other equipment.

The Bottom Line

Enable 4K, HDR, and 120Hz by matching the complete capability of the source output, display input, certified cable, intermediary devices, and software settings. Use Ultra High Speed HDMI for 4K120-oriented connections, select the correct Windows display and refresh rate, enable HDR, extend rather than duplicate the desktop, and troubleshoot the physical chain before buying replacements.
