Then defer JavaScript that can wait until HTML parsing finishes, use async only for independent scripts, inline the small amount of CSS required for the first viewport, and load the remaining CSS later. Finish by testing real interactions and Core Web Vitals; a higher PageSpeed score is not a success if a menu, form, cart, consent dialog, or layout breaks.

What “render-blocking” means in WordPress
When a browser parses HTML and encounters a conventional external script, parsing can pause while the browser downloads and executes that file. Google for Developers describes this parser pause as a reason to avoid or minimize blocking JavaScript. A script in the document head can therefore add network round trips before the browser reaches the markup that could be displayed.
Stylesheets are blocking for a different reason. Before painting a page, the browser normally downloads and processes external CSS so it knows how elements should look. A large theme stylesheet, several plugin stylesheets, or a font and layout chain can all delay the first meaningful pixels. Google recommends delivering the rules needed for the initial viewport as critical CSS and deferring the remainder.

The warning does not mean that every listed resource is unnecessary. A stylesheet may contain rules needed for the header, and a script may initialize a navigation menu or a payment form. Removing such a file can make an audit look better while making the page unusable. Treat each URL in the audit as a candidate for prioritization, not as permission to delete it.
Measure the outcome with First Contentful Paint (FCP), Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), and interaction behavior. A faster first paint that is followed by a flash of unstyled content, a shifted hero image, or an unresponsive menu is a regression.
Prepare a safe, representative test
- Choose page templates, not just one URL. Test the home page, a normal post, a page with a page-builder layout, an archive, a search result, and any commerce, membership, or form template that matters to your visitors. Each template can enqueue a different set of files.
- Run PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse in logged-out mode. Record the full script and stylesheet URLs shown under the render-blocking audit. Repeat on mobile and desktop because responsive templates and conditional enqueues can differ.
- Map dependencies. Note which files are third-party, which are loaded by the theme, and which are added by plugins. Look for code that depends on a global library, a specific execution order, an early cookie or consent decision, or markup that appears later in the document.
- Capture a baseline. Save FCP, LCP, CLS, the audit details, and a short functional checklist before changing settings. Use the same URLs and test conditions after each change so improvements are attributable.
- Back up and stage changes where possible. Optimization settings can alter generated HTML and cached CSS. A staging copy or a reversible configuration makes it easier to identify the setting that caused a failure.
Choose the right JavaScript loading mode
| Loading mode | What happens | Use it when | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Synchronous (default) | HTML parsing pauses while the file downloads and executes. | The code must run before first paint, writes markup needed immediately, or has an execution requirement that cannot be moved. | It can delay parsing and the first render. |
defer |
The browser can continue parsing; the script executes after parsing and preserves document order among deferred scripts. | A dependency-ordered, non-critical script can wait until the document has been parsed. | Code that expects to run before parsing, or code that was incorrectly assumed to be synchronous, may fail. |
async |
The browser can continue parsing, but the script executes as soon as it finishes downloading; order is not guaranteed. | The script is independent of other scripts and its execution timing does not matter, such as some self-contained measurement code. | Libraries and dependants can run out of order, producing intermittent errors. |
Use defer for ordered, non-critical code
defer is usually the safer first choice for theme and plugin code that needs the DOM and has dependencies. Deferred scripts execute after parsing and retain document order, so a library can be placed before the file that calls it. This does not make every script safe to defer: code that must establish a global before another inline block runs, or code required for a pre-paint decision, may need to remain synchronous or be rewritten.
In a custom integration, the resulting markup resembles <script src="/path/app.js" defer></script>. In WordPress, prefer the theme or plugin’s enqueue mechanism rather than editing generated HTML directly. If your WordPress version and integration support a loading strategy in the enqueue call, set the strategy there so dependencies remain visible to WordPress. Otherwise, use a carefully scoped filter or optimization plugin and inspect the final page source.

Reserve async for independent files
async is appropriate only when the file does not depend on another script and no later code depends on its result. Because download completion determines execution time, two asynchronous files can run in either order. Do not apply it to a library-plus-extension pair, a script that expects a global created by another file, or inline code that immediately calls an asynchronous API.
Analytics and advertising tags often appear independent, but consent requirements can make them conditional. Ensure that the consent mechanism still controls whether the tag loads and that a blocked or delayed tag does not prevent the rest of the page from functioning.

Keep genuinely critical scripts synchronous
Some small bootstrap code must run before the first paint—for example, code that chooses a theme mode to prevent a visible color flash. A script that is required to render an essential navigation state may also need an early position. Keep these files small, document why they are synchronous, and avoid using that exception as a blanket rule for an entire plugin.
Implement JavaScript changes in WordPress
Manual enqueue and dependency control
Manual control gives the most precise result when you can edit a child theme or maintain a custom plugin. Identify the handle that enqueues each file, verify its declared dependencies, and assign a deferred strategy only to files that can wait. If a plugin marks a file as dependent on a library, preserve that relationship; changing attributes on the generated tag without understanding the dependency graph can create race conditions.

After changing an enqueue, inspect the rendered source and browser console. Confirm that the attribute is present on the intended URL, that the library appears before its dependent, and that no duplicate copy is being loaded by another plugin. Keep a change log so a later plugin update does not silently undo or duplicate the customization.
Plugin-based control
Optimization plugins can apply attributes across many enqueued files and maintain a generated cache. WP Rocket documents a Load JavaScript Deferred option that adds deferred behavior and an exclusion mechanism for scripts that cannot be delayed safely. This is useful when you need broad coverage but do not want to hand-edit every enqueue.
Enable the option, clear the plugin and CDN caches, and test before adding exclusions. If a feature fails, exclude the smallest responsible file or handle rather than disabling deferred loading globally. Re-test after each exclusion; a long exclusion list often indicates that a dependency or inline initialization pattern needs a more targeted fix.
Deliver CSS according to visual priority
Build a critical CSS set for the first viewport
Critical CSS is the small set of rules required to display the content visible at the initial viewport: document background, header, navigation state, typography metrics, hero or title block, and the first structural elements. It is not the complete theme stylesheet. Inline that block in the document head so the browser can paint the initial view without waiting for every rule used below the fold.

Critical CSS must reflect the templates and breakpoints you actually serve. A rule set for a post page may not include the grid, product cards, or form controls used elsewhere. Generate or maintain critical rules per meaningful template, and include responsive variants for the mobile and desktop viewports you measure.
Defer the remaining stylesheet
After the first viewport is covered, load the rest of the stylesheet without delaying the initial paint. The implementation must preserve the stylesheet’s eventual application so users do not lose hover states, menus, responsive breakpoints, typography, or component styles as they scroll. Watch for a flash of unstyled content (FOUC) and for layout shifts when fonts or dimensions arrive late.
Remove unused CSS carefully
Unused-CSS removal analyzes the pages it can access and strips rules that appear unnecessary. Dynamic classes, personalization, consent states, sliders, pop-ups, and content loaded after the initial HTML can be missed. A rule absent from the first page view may still be required when a visitor opens a menu or submits a form. Safelist dynamic selectors and test every state that matters.
Use asynchronous full CSS when unused-CSS removal is unsuitable
WP Rocket recommends Remove Unused CSS as its preferred CSS approach. Its Load CSS Asynchronously option is intended as a fallback when removing unused rules causes an issue. This method generates critical-path CSS and loads the remaining stylesheet asynchronously. Compare the visual result on each major template rather than assuming that either method is universally better.
Best Value
| CSS approach | Visual stability | Maintenance | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand-maintained critical CSS plus deferred remainder | Can be excellent when the critical set is accurate; vulnerable to drift after design changes. | Highest ongoing effort. | Teams that control templates and can review CSS changes. |
| Remove Unused CSS | Often keeps the initial payload small, but dynamic states require safelisting and testing. | Automated generation reduces routine work; caches must be regenerated after changes. | Sites whose templates and dynamic selectors are understood by the analyzer. |
| Load CSS Asynchronously | Critical-path generation can stabilize the first view; incorrect critical rules can still cause flashes or shifts. | Less selector maintenance than manual work, but asynchronous loading must be monitored. | Sites where unused-CSS removal is unsuitable or produces visual regressions. |
Configure WP Rocket without breaking the site
- Open the JavaScript settings. Enable Load JavaScript Deferred. Do not immediately add a broad exclusion list.
- Clear generated caches. Purge the page cache and any CDN or server cache so visitors receive the new HTML and attributes.
- Exercise interactive features. Open the mobile menu, desktop navigation, accordions, sliders, forms, search, consent dialog, login flow, cart, checkout, and any logged-in controls. Check the browser console for dependency or initialization errors.
- Exclude only proven exceptions. If one feature fails, identify the smallest script involved and add that file or handle to the documented exclusion field. Re-test the feature and the rest of the page after every exclusion.
- Choose a CSS method. Start with Remove Unused CSS. If it removes required dynamic rules or creates unacceptable visual differences, disable it and use Load CSS Asynchronously, which generates critical-path CSS and loads the remainder asynchronously.
- Regenerate after design changes. Theme updates, new blocks, plugin templates, and changed breakpoints can invalidate generated critical or unused-CSS data. Purge and regenerate before judging the new result.
Plugin automation changes the delivery behavior of many files at once. Keep a record of the active settings and exclusions so another administrator can diagnose a future failure instead of disabling optimization blindly.
Manual control versus a plugin
| Decision factor | Manual enqueue and CSS work | Optimization plugin |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Precise per-handle dependencies, conditions, and template rules. | Fast site-wide coverage with exclusions and generated assets. |
| Debugging effort | Higher initial effort, but each change is explicit. | Lower setup effort; failures can involve combined, cached, or rewritten assets. |
| Breakage risk | Localized when changes are narrowly scoped, but easy to misconfigure in code. | Broad changes can affect many templates; exclusion and regression testing are essential. |
| Maintenance | Requires developer review when handles, templates, or dependencies change. | Requires cache regeneration, selector safelists, and review after updates. |
| Best choice | A team that needs deterministic behavior and can maintain a child theme or custom plugin. | A site owner who needs centralized controls and accepts the need for exclusions and testing. |
Validate every optimization change
- Purge all relevant caches. Clear WordPress page caches, the CDN, reverse proxy, and browser cache. A stale response can make a correct change appear ineffective or expose only some visitors to it.
- Test logged-out mobile and desktop pages. Use the same representative templates selected for the baseline. Check both a cold visit and a repeat visit if your cache behaves differently.
- Check visual stability. Look for missing styles, FOUC, late font swaps, shifted images, collapsed containers, broken responsive breakpoints, and content moving when deferred CSS arrives.
- Check interactions. Exercise menus, forms, carts, sliders, consent dialogs, search, login, media controls, and any feature initialized by JavaScript. Watch the console and network panel for 404 responses and uncaught exceptions.
- Rerun PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse. Compare LCP, FCP, CLS, and interaction responsiveness with the same URL and device settings. A warning may remain for a deliberately synchronous, essential file; document why it is required instead of forcing it into an unsafe mode.
- Monitor after deployment. Real-user behavior can reveal a failure that a small test set misses, especially on slower mobile connections or a template that was not included in the lab run.
Troubleshoot common failures
A menu, slider, or form stops working
Look for a dependent script executing before its library, an inline initializer running before a deferred file, or a script that requires synchronous timing. Temporarily restore the suspect file’s original behavior, confirm the feature returns, then either exclude that file or move the initialization so it runs after the dependency is available. Do not switch every script back to synchronous loading as the first response.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Analytics or consent behavior is incorrect
Verify that consent code runs before tags that require permission and that asynchronous execution cannot bypass the consent decision. Keep the consent bootstrap early if necessary, and defer independent measurement code only after its trigger and data-layer contract are understood.
The page flashes unstyled content
The critical CSS set is incomplete or the deferred stylesheet arrives too late. Add the missing above-the-fold rules, confirm that the critical block matches the current template and breakpoint, and check that the stylesheet is still loaded for the final state.
Content shifts after CSS loads
Reserve dimensions for images, embeds, and other late content; include initial typography and layout metrics in critical CSS; and verify that asynchronous font or component rules do not change geometry unexpectedly. Compare CLS before and after rather than judging only the first screenshot.
The audit still lists a resource
Not every listed file can or should be eliminated. A small critical script or stylesheet may be necessary for correct first paint. Confirm whether it is truly delaying the measured render, whether its payload can be reduced, and whether its role justifies the remaining cost. The objective is a fast usable render, not a zero-resource report.
Quick Recap
Practical decision checklist
- Have you recorded the exact blocking URLs on every important template?
- Is each JavaScript file classified as critical, dependency-ordered, or independent?
- Are only independent files marked
async? - Are dependency-ordered, non-critical files deferred without breaking inline initialization?
- Does critical CSS cover the initial viewport at the tested breakpoints?
- Have dynamic selectors, menus, forms, carts, and consent states been protected from unused-CSS removal?
- Were caches purged after each change?
- Were LCP, FCP, CLS, and real interactions checked on the same representative pages?
- Is every exclusion documented with the feature it protects?
