To edit a compatible clip, open it in Photos, tap Edit, choose Audio Mix, select a mix and adjust its intensity, then tap Done. Audio Mix works with eligible videos recorded with Spatial Audio; it does not add the same recording data to ordinary Stereo or Mono footage.
Check that your iPhone and video are eligible
Apple says Spatial Audio video recording is supported on iPhone 16 models, iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air. However, Apple’s compatibility guidance for Audio Mix editing specifically excludes iPhone 16e footage. So don’t assume that every device with “iPhone 16” in its name qualifies. The control is also intended for source videos captured with Spatial Audio, rather than clips recorded in Stereo or Mono. See Apple’s Audio Mix compatibility guidance.

Apple describes Audio Mix as a way to change the sound after recording: “When you capture a video with Spatial Audio on supported iPhone models, you can change the video sound afterwards to focus more on voices, reduce background sounds and more.” This guidance appears in its video-editing instructions.

- Open Photos and select an eligible video.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Audio Mix.
- Choose a mix, then move the intensity slider to adjust its effect and background-noise levels.
- Preview the result and adjust the mix or slider if needed, then tap Done to save the edit.
Choose the mix that suits the clip

| In-Frame | Reduces sounds and voices from sources outside the video frame. | Try it when off-camera voices or sounds distract from what is shown. |
| Studio | Reduces background sounds and reverb to make the recording sound more like a professional studio recording. | Try it when background noise or room echo is a concern. |
| Cinematic | Places voices on a front-facing track while environmental sounds remain in surround. | Try it when voices should stand out but the surrounding ambience should remain spatial. |
The slider adjusts the mix effect, but Apple does not promise that any setting will isolate a voice completely or remove every unwanted sound. Listen to the preview and choose the result that works for the particular recording.

Set Spatial Audio for future recordings
On a supported iPhone, open Settings > Camera > Record Sound and select Spatial Audio. Apple says iPhone 16 or later uses Spatial Audio for video, and its video-recording guide describes it as the default on iPhone 16 models or later. The Record Sound options also include Stereo and Mono. For details, see Apple’s sound-recording options guide.
Apple also says compatible AirPods and AirPods Pro can be used as a microphone in supported camera apps. Its guidance does not establish whether that microphone setup preserves Audio Mix eligibility, so check the specific app and recording configuration rather than assuming it will.

If Audio Mix is missing
- Confirm the video was recorded with Spatial Audio, not Stereo or Mono.
- Check the recording device: the iPhone 16e is excluded from the cited Audio Mix compatibility guidance.
- Open the clip in Photos and check under Edit for Audio Mix.
