To remove a person or object in Google Photos, open the image, tap Edit, select the unwanted area by tapping, circling or brushing, choose Erase, review the result and tap Done. On Android, the control may be listed as Magic Eraser under Actions or found with the editor’s Search. On iPhone and iPad, it appears among the suggested editing tools. Save the edit or use Save as copy to preserve a separate version.
What Google Photos can remove
Google Photos provides two closely related ways to clear distractions from a picture: Magic Eraser and the editor’s general unwanted-object selection workflow. Both use the same basic sequence: mark the person or object, choose Erase, inspect the result and finish with Done.

The exact control is not identical on every device. Android may place Magic Eraser in Actions or expose it through Search; Pixel phones have a documented Edit > Actions > Magic Eraser route; and the iPhone and iPad app presents Erase among the available suggested tools. Google also says that some tools depend on the photo, device and available memory, so a control shown in one account may not appear in another. 1. Open the image in Google Photos
Launch the Google Photos app, open the picture you want to change and tap Edit. The removal tools are part of the mobile editor rather than the ordinary photo-viewing screen.

2. Find Magic Eraser
If the editor shows Search, tap it and type Magic Eraser. If Search is not present, open Actions and choose Magic Eraser. Depending on the editor version, Actions can appear beneath Tools.
Google’s Pixel instructions use the direct path Edit > Actions > Magic Eraser. Pixel guidance lists the feature for Pixel 4a and later; availability can still depend on the specific editor and image.
3. Mark the unwanted person or object
Use whichever selection method best fits the subject:

- Tap a distinct person or object when the editor identifies it clearly.
- Circle the entire distraction when it occupies a compact area.
- Brush over irregular edges, thin objects or parts that a tap does not capture.
Do not assume the first selection is final. Use Add to include missed portions and Subtract to remove parts of the selection that overlap something you want to keep. For a person, check clothing, hair, shoes and any shadow or accessory that remains in the frame. For an object, inspect its full outline, including narrow handles, cables or edges.
4. Erase and inspect
Tap Erase. Google Photos applies the edit to the marked area. Examine the replacement before committing it: look at the subject’s former location, nearby edges and any repeated pattern in the background. If part of the distraction remains, select that portion again and run Erase once more. If the selection included an area that should stay, return to the selection controls and use Subtract before erasing.

5. Finish and save
Tap Done after you are satisfied. The editor may then offer Save or Save as copy. Choose Save when you want the edited version to replace the version you are working on. Choose Save as copy when you want a separate edited image and want to retain the original independently.
When Google Photos backup is enabled, Google says edits may sync to your account. Wait for the edited item to finish saving before closing the app if you need it available on another device.

On a supported Pixel phone or tablet, open the image and follow Edit > Actions > Magic Eraser. Magic Eraser may suggest distractions automatically. You can tap a suggestion or use the circle and brush controls to select additional people or objects. Review every suggestion rather than accepting all of them: an automatic suggestion can identify a distraction you want removed, but you remain responsible for checking what is selected.
Google’s Pixel help identifies Pixel 4a and later as the supported Pixel range in its current instructions. That statement is an eligibility guide, not a guarantee that every tool will be displayed for every photo or editor build. If the command is absent, use the availability checks later in this guide.
How to erase an object on iPhone or iPad
1. Open the mobile editor
Open the picture in the Google Photos app and tap Edit. The iOS and iPadOS editor does not necessarily use the same menu names as Android.

2. Select the area
Tap, circle or brush over the person or object you want to remove. Make the selection large enough to include the entire distraction, but avoid surrounding details that belong in the final image.
3. Choose Erase
Choose Erase from the suggested tools, inspect the result and tap Done. Google notes that suggested tools can vary by availability, so the iPhone or iPad may show a different set of controls from an Android phone even when both apps are current.
After Done, use the available save option. If the editor offers Save as copy, use it when the untouched photo must remain separately available.

Google’s general computer editing guidance is available at Google Photos Help for computer. It is useful for checking which controls the browser currently exposes, but it should not be treated as a full substitute for the Android or iOS app.
How to make a cleaner selection
Use the smallest complete area
Start with the complete person or object, including visible portions that extend beyond the main shape. A partial selection can leave a recognizable fragment behind. Conversely, selecting too much background can change details that were already correct. Circle or brush around the subject rather than drawing a large box over an entire section of the image.

Work in passes
For a large distraction, remove it in manageable sections instead of selecting the whole scene at once. A person may require separate passes for the body and an outstretched arm; a sign or cable may require several brush strokes. After each pass, inspect the boundary before selecting the next portion.
Use Add and Subtract deliberately
Add is for missed pixels or detached parts of the same subject. Subtract protects nearby details that were accidentally swept into the selection. This refinement is especially useful where the unwanted subject overlaps a person, building edge, text or other detail that must remain.
Check the result at normal viewing size
Zoomed-in inspection helps reveal leftover fragments, while normal viewing size tells you whether the edited photo still looks natural in the way it will usually be seen. Compare the edited image with the original before deciding whether to keep the change. If the result is not acceptable, do not overwrite the only copy you need; use Save as copy for future edits.

Save the edit
Save keeps the edited result as the version you are working with. This is appropriate when removing the distraction is the intended final change and you do not need a separate edited file. Google Photos may synchronize the edit when backup is turned on.

Save as copy to preserve two versions
Save as copy creates a separate edited photo. It is the safer choice when the original may later be needed for a different crop, an alternate edit or proof of what was in the frame. Google warns that you cannot use Revert to undo changes to a photo that was saved as a copy, because the copy is a separate image. Keep the original item if you may need to return to it.
Shared albums need extra care
Google Photos distinguishes between saving edits that appear in a shared album and saving a private copy. Before saving, decide whether collaborators should see the edited version or whether the edited image should remain only in your library. Open the edited result and the original separately to confirm which item you are sharing.
Where is Magic Eraser when it is missing?
Check whether you are using the web editor
The browser version of Google Photos does not contain every mobile editing feature. If you are editing at photos.google.com and cannot find Magic Eraser or Erase, open the same image in the Google Photos app on Android or iOS. The absence of the control in a browser does not by itself mean the photo or account is ineligible.
Check Android version and memory
Google’s general Android guidance says most editing features require Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM. Certain tools may require more memory. A phone that falls below those requirements may not show the control or may offer fewer editing options.

Some editing features are Pixel-only. For Pixel devices, Google’s current instructions list Magic Eraser for Pixel 4a and later. If you use another Android model, look for the general erase workflow shown in the editor rather than assuming the Pixel menu will be present.
Check the individual photo
Google says control availability can vary by photo as well as by device. Try another image in the same app. If the tool appears for one image but not another, the difference may be photo-specific rather than a problem with your account.
Follow the labels shown by your current app
Google’s help pages note that interface locations can change. On Android, use Search if it is offered; otherwise inspect Actions and Tools. On iPhone and iPad, look at the suggested tools after selecting an area. The label Erase is the action that completes the removal, even when the entry point differs.
A practical workflow for a reliable edit
- Open the mobile app. Use Android, iPhone or iPad rather than assuming the browser editor has the same tools.
- Open the image and tap Edit. Confirm that you are editing the correct photo before selecting anything.
- Locate the removal control. Search for Magic Eraser on Android, open Actions on a Pixel, or choose the suggested Erase tool on iPhone or iPad.
- Select the complete distraction. Tap, circle or brush, then use Add and Subtract to refine the boundary.
- Tap Erase. Inspect the replacement at both close and normal viewing size.
- Repeat only where needed. Select leftover fragments separately instead of broadening a selection that already looks correct.
- Tap Done. Compare the result with the original.
- Choose the save behavior intentionally. Use Save for the edited working image or Save as copy to retain a separate edited version.
- Verify sharing and backup. If the photo belongs to a shared album, confirm whether the edited version should be visible there; if you need it on another device, allow backup to synchronize.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Looking only under Tools: On some Android editor versions, Magic Eraser is surfaced by Search or Actions instead.
- Using the computer editor first: The web editor may not include the removal feature. Move to the mobile app when the control is missing.
- Selecting only the obvious part: Include detached or thin portions of the subject, then inspect for remnants after Erase.
- Erasing a large background region: Use a tighter circle or brush and Subtract unwanted spillover before applying the edit.
- Overwriting the original by habit: Save as copy when you may need the untouched image later.
- Assuming every device has the same menu: Android, Pixel and iOS have different entry points, and Google varies availability by device, memory and photo.
Bottom line
For most removals, the dependable path is to open the photo in the Google Photos mobile app, choose Edit, select the person or object with a tap, circle or brush, refine the selection, tap Erase and finish with Done. Android users should check Search or Actions, Pixel users can use Edit > Actions > Magic Eraser, and iPhone or iPad users should look among the suggested tools. If the control is absent, check the platform, Android version, RAM, Pixel eligibility and the individual photo before assuming the feature is unavailable.
