You can edit photos in Lightroom Mobile without importing them: the app can open pictures directly from your device’s photo storage. Import photos when you want them in Lightroom’s managed library, where albums, organization tools, and eligible cloud syncing are available. The key is to know whether you are working with a device photo or a Lightroom-library photo before you organize, edit, or expect it to sync.

Choose between device photos and the Lightroom library

Lightroom Mobile offers two ways to work with pictures. On iOS, the Device view provides access to photos in the device’s existing storage; on Android, use the Gallery tab. You can open and edit those photos without importing them into Lightroom. That gives you an editing route, not a Lightroom cloud backup. Adobe’s device photo access guide explains the distinction.

Import selected pictures when you want copies in the Lightroom library. Adobe documents selecting multiple photos and importing them, including an option to add them directly to an existing or newly created album. Eligible premium subscriptions sync Lightroom-library photos across devices; the exact sync entitlement depends on the plan. See Adobe’s device import instructions.

Workflow Where the photo is worked with What to expect
Open from Device or Gallery The photo stays in its existing device storage location. Open and edit without importing; this alone does not add the photo to the Lightroom library or back it up to Lightroom cloud storage.
Import to Lightroom A copy is added to the Lightroom library. Organize the library copy in albums. Sync across devices depends on your account and plan.

Create albums around real projects

Albums group Lightroom-library photos according to your workflow. A trip album, a client project, or a set of images selected for delivery can each be a useful starting point; these are organizational suggestions, not required categories.

  1. Open the Lightroom tab and go to the albums view.
  2. Choose Create new, select Album, and enter a title.
  3. Add photos from the device gallery, Lightroom library, Files, or a connected camera or card.

Adobe’s album guide also describes album settings such as automatic addition from device photos and sharing controls. If you enable auto-add, check the selected device folders and formats so the album collects the pictures you intend.

Find, sort, and select photos in the library

Once photos are in Lightroom, use the library’s search and organization controls to narrow a large collection. Adobe documents search across photos, albums, people, objects, locations, and keywords, along with filters and sorting. Depending on the workspace, you can also choose square or justified grids and segment photos by criteria such as date or media type.

  • Search and filter: Use search for a known subject or keyword, then apply filters or sorting to refine the collection.
  • Rate and review: Assign star ratings and use groupings for edited, unedited, imported, or deleted photos.
  • Work in batches: Select several photos for supported batch actions, including adding them to albums, viewing metadata, or sharing. Available actions can differ by device, file type, and plan.

These controls and workspace options are described in Adobe’s Lightroom Mobile workspace overview.

Edit while keeping versions and organization accessible

Open a photo to reach its editing tools alongside photo information, ratings, album organization, sharing and export options, and sync status. Lightroom also provides undo and redo, versions, and reset controls. A practical sequence is to make an adjustment, check the result against a version, and use reset if you want to return to an earlier state.

Presets can be reused, and Adobe documents copying, pasting, or applying settings from another photo. These options help maintain a consistent look across a set without requiring you to repeat every adjustment manually. For the documented workspace controls, see the workspace overview.

Adobe lists healing, masking, geometry tools, batch editing, and raw editing among premium features. Access depends on subscription and plan details, so check your current plan and app version before relying on a particular tool. Adobe’s mobile FAQ summarizes the free and premium feature split.

Know whether you are adding or moving photos

Adding and moving photos between albums have different effects. Adding creates a reference in the destination album while retaining the photo in its existing album; moving transfers it and removes it from the source album.

Action Result Use it when
Add to another album The photo appears in the destination album and remains in the source. You want one photo available in more than one project or collection.
Move to another album The photo appears in the destination and is removed from the source album. You want to relocate it rather than keep it in both albums.

You can select multiple photos and use these actions from an album; for an individual photo, Adobe also documents the Organize option in the editing view. Details are in Adobe’s copy and move instructions.

Export, save locally, and manage sync separately

Sharing or exporting an edited photo and saving a copy to the device are distinct from syncing a Lightroom-library item. Use the export or save option when you need a local file; use Lightroom sync when you want library content available through a supported account and plan. Check the photo’s sync status in the app when you need to confirm whether it has synced.

Adobe states that the free tier includes 5 GB of cloud storage shared across Adobe apps. Its storage guide also describes reduced-resolution downloads and Smart Previews as ways to reduce device storage use while continuing to work with photos. Storage and sync terms vary by plan, and Adobe advises checking the details of mobile-only subscriptions. See Adobe’s cloud storage and sync guide.

If you use Lightroom Classic with Lightroom Mobile, Adobe says only one Classic catalog can sync at a time and advises ensuring items have fully synced before switching catalogs. Adobe also says that after a subscription is canceled, free mobile features remain available, while premium features and device syncing do not. Consult the current subscription and retention terms for the applicable details.

When importing from a camera or card

Adobe documents importing from a connected camera or card, but that does not establish compatibility for every reader, phone, tablet, or card format. Confirm that the connection and file format are supported by your particular device before relying on that route. Adobe’s album instructions and import guide describe the available workflow.
