On iPad, use the project format and storage workflow shown in the iPad guide, and do not treat an exported JPEG or PNG as a replacement for the editable project.
Your exact controls depend on whether you use the Mac or iPad edition of Pixelmator Pro in Apple Creator Studio, which operating system you run, and whether you still have an active subscription. This guide separates those routes, explains how to choose an export, and shows what happens to projects if your subscription ends.

Understand the two files you need
Editing and exporting solve different problems. The editable project keeps the document structure you may need later: layers, text, vector elements, masks, adjustments, and other work that can be changed. The delivery file is a finished image created for a particular destination. It is the copy you attach to an email, upload to a website, place in a presentation, send to a printer, or pass to another application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn Mac, Apple identifies Pixelmator Pro Document (PXD) as the default native format. Use PXD as the working master when you expect revisions. Export a second file instead of overwriting that master. Apple documents the Mac save behavior in Save, name, and close documents in Pixelmator Pro on Mac.

- Revisions: reopen the master, make changes, save it, and export a new delivery copy rather than repeatedly editing a flattened export.
Apple’s user guide describes exporting finished work in JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC, and PSD, with sizing choices for social media, print, and the web. The available formats do not make one format universally best; the destination and the recipient’s requirements determine the correct choice. See the Pixelmator Pro User Guide for Mac and Pixelmator Pro User Guide for iPad for the controls on your platform.
Check your device, system, and Creator Studio access
Before opening a project, identify the platform and edition you are using. Apple’s current Apple Creator Studio requirements state that the Creator Studio version of Pixelmator Pro requires macOS 26 or later on Mac. On iPad, it requires iPadOS 26 or later and a compatible iPad.
| Route | Apple’s stated Creator Studio requirement | What to check before starting |
|---|---|---|
| Mac | macOS 26 or later | Install the current Creator Studio version, or confirm that an existing standalone Mac version remains available to you. |
| iPad | iPadOS 26 or later on a compatible iPad | Apple lists iPad models with M1 or later, iPad (A16), and iPad mini (A17 Pro). |
Creator Studio also requires an Apple Account and an internet connection to subscribe. Requirements and compatible hardware can change, so check Apple’s current page before moving a project to a different device.
Know what subscription status changes
Apple says projects remain on your devices after an Apple Creator Studio subscription ends. You can copy or share those project files, but Apple says an active subscriber is needed to open or edit them. If a project will need future changes, keep the original file backed up and maintain access to the subscription and a compatible system.
Existing standalone Mac Pixelmator Pro versions can continue to be used, according to Apple. That does not automatically mean every Creator Studio feature or every project behavior is available in every older version, so keep the application and operating system information with your project archive.
Mac: edit the project and preserve the PXD master
1. Open the project in the Mac guide’s workflow
Launch Pixelmator Pro from Creator Studio and open the project using the document-opening controls for your installed version. If the project is stored in cloud storage or an external drive, make sure the file is fully available before editing. Work from a copy when the original is an archive or when several people may be changing it.
The Mac application is documented for photo editing, design, and illustration. Apple’s overview includes RAW processing, color correction, retouching, layer compositing, intelligent adjustments, painting, vector drawing, and typography. Use the tools appropriate to the project, but keep the editable document open until you have saved the changes and verified the export.

2. Save the working document as PXD
On Mac, Apple documents the save command as File > Save and identifies Pixelmator Pro Document (PXD) as the default format. When you first create or convert a project, use File > Save As to give the master a descriptive name and location, then continue saving that document as you work.
A useful naming pattern is project-name_master_v01.pxd, followed by a new version number when a major revision is approved. Keep the word “master” reserved for the editable file so it is not confused with an exported delivery copy.
Apple notes that saving in another format may provide a sidecar file and an image-quality setting. Because those options depend on the format and current application controls, inspect the save dialog rather than assuming that a non-PXD save preserves the same editing structure. If later editing matters, retain the PXD master even when you also save another format.
3. Review the document before export
- Confirm that the correct project and latest version are open.
- Check text, artwork edges, masks, and composited layers at a useful zoom.
- Remove temporary guides or hidden test elements that should not appear in the delivery image.
- Decide the destination before choosing dimensions: a social post, printed piece, web image, or another application may require different sizing.
- Save the PXD master before generating the delivery file.
4. Export a separate delivery file
Use the Mac export controls described in the current Pixelmator Pro User Guide. The guide’s table of contents separates exporting photos, videos, and documents, exporting for the web, slicing a document into separate image exports, and quickly sharing an optimized image. The exact dialog and labels can vary by document type and application update, so follow the command shown for the file you have open rather than relying on an older menu path.

Save it outside the master’s versioning sequence. After export, open the resulting file in an appropriate viewer or destination application and check that it is the intended size, appearance, and file type.
iPad: edit with touch, then export from the iPad workflow
1. Confirm the iPad route
Use the iPad edition and its current guide when the project is on an iPad. Apple describes Pixelmator Pro on iPad as optimized for touch. Apple Pencil can provide more precise editing, but it is optional and is not required to save or export a project. Confirm current Pencil and iPad compatibility before buying or assigning a specific Pencil generation.
The iPad guide covers the same broad creative purposes—photo editing, design, and illustration—but the controls, available gestures, and placement of commands are not identical to Mac. Follow the Pixelmator Pro User Guide for iPad for the current opening, saving, and export controls.

2. Open the project and make the edits
Open the project from the location where it is stored, then edit with touch or Apple Pencil. For a project that originated on Mac, keep the original PXD file backed up and verify that the iPad version displays the elements you need before making substantial changes. If a feature or document behavior differs, use the platform-specific guide rather than assuming that a Mac shortcut or panel exists on iPad.

Apple’s iPad documentation includes painting, vector drawing, typography, photo adjustments, and compositing. Recent updates also brought Select and Mask to iPad, with controls for refining selections and complex edges. Apple announced that update on September 29, 2026, in New updates coming to Apple Creator Studio.
3. Preserve the editable project
Save the project using the iPad document workflow shown in the current guide, and keep the editable project separate from any image you export. The iPad interface may not present the same File menu as Mac, so do not infer a Mac menu sequence. If you move the project between devices, retain the original file and use a clear version name so the editable copy can be identified later.
4. Export for the intended destination
Use the iPad export controls in Apple’s guide and select the destination’s required dimensions and file type. Apple lists JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC, and PSD among the available export formats and describes sizing for social media, print, and the web. Export a new file after the project is saved, then inspect that file before sharing it.
When an iPad project will be edited again, do not rely only on an exported image. Keep the project file in its original editable form and make a separate export for the person or service receiving the finished image.

Choose the export format by destination
Apple confirms these export choices, but the guides do not establish a universal rule that one format is always best for every use. Check the receiving service, printer, editor, or app for its accepted formats and required dimensions.
| Format listed by Apple | Decision question | Practical handling |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | Does the destination request a common finished image? | Use it when the receiving destination accepts JPEG, then verify the exported appearance and dimensions. |
| PNG | Does the destination request PNG? | Choose PNG when it is the required or accepted delivery format; keep the editable project separately. |
| TIFF | Does a print or production workflow request TIFF? | Follow the printer or production service’s specification, including its requested size and settings. |
| HEIC | Does the receiving device or service support HEIC? | Use HEIC only when compatibility is confirmed by the destination. |
| PSD | Does another editor or collaborator specifically request PSD? | Provide PSD when requested, but retain the native project because cross-application editability can depend on the receiving software. |
Do not assume that changing the filename extension changes the format correctly. Select the format in Pixelmator Pro’s export or save controls, and verify the resulting file after it is written.

Set dimensions for where the image will be used
One export size rarely fits every destination. Apple’s Mac and iPad guides explicitly cover sizing for social media, print, and the web. Start by identifying the destination’s current specification, then set the output dimensions in Pixelmator Pro’s export workflow. If the destination specifies a maximum file size as well as pixel dimensions, satisfy both requirements and inspect the final file.
Social media
Use the platform’s current post, story, profile, or banner specification rather than a remembered size. Export a dedicated copy for each materially different placement when the required dimensions differ. Keep the full editable project so you can reframe the artwork without degrading an earlier delivery export.
Web pages and online services
Check the site or service for its accepted formats, maximum dimensions, and file-size limits. Use Pixelmator Pro’s web-oriented export option when the guide presents one for your document, then test the resulting file in the target service or a browser preview.
Ask the printer or print service which format, dimensions, and production settings it requires. “Print” alone does not identify a single correct export. Deliver the requested format and size, and preserve the editable master in case the printer requests a correction.
Use Pixelmator Pro inside other Apple Creator Studio workflows
Apple documents direct connections between Pixelmator Pro and other Apple applications. In an announcement dated June 30, 2026, Apple explained that a selected Final Cut Pro frame can be sent to Pixelmator Pro to create a thumbnail or social graphic and then returned to the timeline. The workflow is described in Apple Creator Studio gets smarter, faster, and more connected.
Apple also says an image in Keynote, Pages, or Numbers can be opened in Pixelmator Pro, edited, and saved back into the source document. This is useful when the image belongs to a presentation, document, or spreadsheet rather than standing alone as a file.
Keep a standalone master even when using an integration
Before sending an image from another app, decide whether you may need to revise it outside that document later. Save or preserve the Pixelmator project when the integration offers a project-saving option, and export a separate file when another person or system needs a conventional image. A returned edit in a source document is not a substitute for an organized project archive.

Troubleshoot common editing and export problems
The project opens but cannot be edited
Check subscription status first. Apple says an active subscriber is needed to open or edit Creator Studio projects after a subscription ends, even though the projects remain on the device and can be copied or shared. Confirm that you are signed in with the Apple Account used for the subscription and that the device meets the current requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The export is the wrong size
Return to the destination specification and export again from the master. Do not resize an already compressed delivery copy if you can avoid it. Create a new destination-specific export from the editable project, using the dimensions required for that social, web, or print use.
The recipient cannot use the file
Ask which formats and dimensions the recipient accepts, then export one of Apple’s listed formats accordingly. HEIC and PSD may not be accepted by every service, while a service may require a particular production format. Keep the native project and provide it only when the recipient has compatible software and actually needs continued editing.
You cannot find the Mac command on iPad
Switch to the iPad guide. The interfaces are separate, and a Mac path such as File > Save As should not be treated as an iPad instruction. Use the current iPad document and export controls instead.
The project is missing after changing devices
Locate the original storage location, check that the file finished syncing or copying, and open the backup rather than an older delivery export. Keep the PXD master and exported files in clearly named folders so a JPEG or PNG cannot be mistaken for the editable source.

- Verify Apple Account, internet, and active subscription access when the project must be opened or edited in Creator Studio.
- Open the latest editable project and save the master before making final changes.
- On Mac, keep the native PXD document as the working master.
- Choose the destination: social media, web, print, another Apple document, video timeline, or another editor.
- Check the destination’s accepted format, dimensions, and file-size requirements.
- Export a separate JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC, or PSD file as appropriate, using the platform-specific guide for the current controls.
- Open the exported file and verify its dimensions, appearance, and ability to upload or open at the destination.
- Deliver the export while retaining the editable project and a backup.
This separation keeps future editing possible while giving each recipient the file they actually need. Apple’s official documentation is the authority for the current Mac and iPad controls: Mac User Guide, iPad User Guide, and Mac document-saving guide.
