How to Edit and Export 10-Bit Log Footage Without Losing Color or Detail

To preserve the intended look of 10-bit log footage, first identify its exact camera log curve and gamut, then set the project’s working and delivery color spaces before grading. Apply the right tone and gamut mapping for the destination, export in a compatible format and bit depth, and check the rendered file. A 10-bit source alone does not guarantee a correctly transformed or tagged 10-bit export.

Why log footage looks flat—and why it can change after export

Log is a camera encoding, not a finished display look. Its flat appearance is expected: footage must be interpreted in the correct input color space, transformed into the editing project’s working space, and then converted to the intended output space. Adobe describes this source-to-working-to-output model for Premiere Pro in its color management documentation.

A mismatch at any stage can make an image look washed out, too contrasty, clipped, or differently colored after export. Camera files in containers such as QuickTime, MXF, and MP4 may not contain enough metadata to identify a vendor-specific log space reliably. Check the color space assigned to clips in your editor rather than assuming automatic detection is correct. Adobe’s Premiere color management options describe this metadata limitation and the available input settings.

Choose Rec.709 SDR or HDR before grading

Decide the delivery target first: a Rec.709 SDR master, or a specified HDR format such as Rec.2100 HLG or PQ. These targets require different output color spaces and transforms. In Premiere, the sequence output space affects both the Program Monitor presentation and the rendered sequence. Its shipped presets use Rec.709 by default; HDR output options are available when paired with compatible format and bit-depth settings.

For SDR, Premiere’s default preset uses Rec.709 processing and output, with input tone mapping for wide-gamut media. Adobe also describes a Wide Gamut (Tone Mapped) setup for camera-raw-heavy grading, using ACEScct as the working space, output tone mapping, and Rec.709 by default. That is an Adobe-specific option, not a universal requirement. Changing the working space after applying effects can change their appearance, so establish the workflow before substantial grading.

A practical workflow for editing and exporting 10-bit log

  1. Protect and identify the originals. Keep a copy of the camera originals and note the camera model, recording profile, log curve, gamut, codec, and bit depth. Check representative clips from every camera and profile in the editor; manually assign the correct input color space if tags are missing or wrong.
  2. Set the project and sequence for the delivery. Choose the intended SDR or HDR target, then set the editing workflow and sequence output accordingly. In Premiere, use its color-management settings to establish the working and output spaces before grading.
  3. Verify input interpretation. Inspect the image and scopes before adding creative corrections. Confirm each clip’s input log and gamut. Do not add a manual conversion LUT on top of an automatic transform unless the workflow calls for both; applying two transforms unintentionally can create excessive contrast or saturation.
  4. Correct exposure and white balance, then shape the look. Use scopes as well as the monitor image. Apply tone and gamut mapping appropriate to the delivery: tone mapping compresses highlights to fit a wider dynamic range into SDR, while gamut compression fits wider color into a narrower destination gamut. The algorithms can differ, particularly in the brightness and saturation of very bright, saturated highlights. Adobe documents the placement and behavior of these mappings in its color management options.
  5. Export for the destination. Set the export color space to match the delivery specification and choose a format and bit depth compatible with that space. If Premiere warns that the selected format or bit depth is incompatible with the sequence output, choose a compatible format or increase the bit depth as appropriate. For SDR, follow the requested Rec.709 specification; for HDR, follow the client’s or platform’s stated HLG or PQ requirements.
  6. Review the rendered file. Play the export in a suitable environment or re-import it and compare it with the intended sequence output. Check its color-space tags as well as the visible image; do not infer correct output solely from the source being 10-bit.

How tone mapping and gamut mapping affect detail

Tone mapping and gamut mapping are not interchangeable fixes. Tone mapping handles values outside the destination’s dynamic range, commonly compressing highlights for SDR. Gamut mapping handles colors outside the destination gamut. In Premiere’s model, input mapping occurs before effects and adjustments, while output mapping occurs afterward. The choice of mapping can alter highlight brightness and saturation, so inspect bright, saturated areas in the final render.

Turning mapping off can clip out-of-range highlights and shadows. If highlights look harsh or lose detail, check whether input tone mapping was applied before grading and compare the available output-mapping approach or manual adjustments. If saturated highlights shift color, compare the mapping and gamut-compression settings on the footage rather than assuming all algorithms produce the same result.

When a LUT is appropriate: Nikon N-Log example

A technical LUT must match the camera encoding and the specific workflow. Nikon’s Log-RAW Technical Guide, whose information is current as of October 2025, documents a particular Premiere workflow for N-RAW footage recorded in N-Log. Premiere opens those clips as RED Wide Gamut (RWG)/Log3G10; Nikon’s documented chain is:

  1. Use Nikon’s log-conversion LUT to convert RWG/Log3G10 to Rec.2020/N-Log.
  2. Apply Nikon’s N-Log-to-Rec.709 technical LUT for Rec.709/BT.1886 output.

Nikon recommends the 65-point conversion LUT in the guide. It also lists a 33-point LUT for environments that cannot use the 65-point version, noting that it may provide lower color-conversion accuracy. This chain is for Nikon N-RAW/N-Log, not a generic recipe for S-Log3, V-Log, F-Log, or other camera profiles. Troubleshoot common color and detail problems

  • Flat, washed out, or overly contrasty: verify the clip’s assigned input color space and check whether both automatic color management and a manual LUT are transforming the image.
  • Clipped or harsh highlights: check input tone mapping and compare the available output mapping or manual adjustments. Disabling mapping can clip values beyond the destination range.
  • Unexpected color in bright, saturated areas: compare tone-mapping algorithms and gamut-compression settings; they can render highlight brightness and saturation differently.
  • Looks right in the editor but wrong in the export: verify the sequence output space, export color space, format, and bit depth. The export format may not support the sequence’s output space.
  • Looks different on another screen: assess it in a display and playback environment suitable for the intended color space. A display cannot correct wrong clip tags or an incorrect export transform.
