Use a restrained, reversible workflow: begin with the best original file, balance overall tones, make local changes only where needed, and judge noise and sharpening at 1:1. The goal is to reveal detail the photo actually recorded—not to brighten every shadow or force every surface into view.
Start with the best source file and protect the original
Keep an untouched original and work on a copy or in a reversible editor. If you have a RAW file, use it as your working source when possible. Adobe explains that RAW files retain more tonal and color data for editing, including more white-balance flexibility and sometimes highlight or shadow detail that a JPEG does not retain (Adobe Camera Raw: Introduction to Camera Raw).

That flexibility has limits: a fully clipped window or a shadow with no recorded information cannot be restored by moving a slider. JPEGs remain editable, but their in-camera processing is already applied and leaves less room for some adjustments.
Set the overall tone before working on details
Choose a plausible starting profile
In Lightroom, imported color RAW files use Adobe Color by default. Adobe describes it as a general starting point for color and tone; creative profiles can make stronger changes, so treat them as a look rather than a neutral correction (Adobe Lightroom: Profiles).

Balance the broad tonal range
Adjust exposure and contrast first, then refine highlights, shadows, whites, and blacks. Watch the editor’s clipping indicators as you work. A dark corner does not need to become as bright as a doorway: preserve the scene’s depth while making important recorded surface detail legible. Adobe’s Lightroom guidance covers these basic tone controls and clipping warnings (Adobe Lightroom: Adjustment controls).
Balance bright openings and dark interiors selectively
A window or doorway may be far brighter than the room around it. Decide which parts of that contrast matter to the photograph before changing the whole frame. If a specific wall, opening, or interior area needs adjustment, use a local mask rather than lifting every shadow uniformly. Lightroom’s local adjustment tools include separate highlight and shadow controls (Adobe Lightroom: Masking).

Check whether raising a dark area reveals useful texture or mostly noise. A shadow adjustment cannot recover detail that was never recorded, and making a dark region brighter can make grain and colored speckles more visible.
Keep color plausible for the light in the scene
Use white balance to correct a clear unwanted cast, not to apply an automatic warm or cool look to every abandoned interior. Make modest vibrance or saturation changes only if the image needs them. The appropriate color depends on the original light and the photograph’s intended mood; there is no single temperature, tint, or saturation setting that is natural for every scene. RAW provides more white-balance flexibility than JPEG, as Adobe explains in its Camera Raw overview.

If consistent color matters across screens or prints, monitor calibration can help. Adobe recommends calibrating the display and explains that a colorimeter measures its output more accurately than visual estimation; its guidance also covers operating-system calibration tools (Adobe Lightroom Classic: Color management).
Reduce noise without erasing surface texture
Inspect dark rooms and lifted shadows at 1:1 (100%) before judging noise reduction. Colored speckles call for color-noise reduction; grayscale grain calls for luminance reduction. Apply only enough to improve the image, then check whether brick, peeling paint, wood grain, and concrete still look distinct.

Judge sharpening at 1:1 and apply it selectively. Use detail and masking controls to emphasize useful edges—such as window frames, rafters, or doorframes—rather than flat walls, sky, shadow noise, or compression artifacts. An excessive radius can make fine detail look unnatural; too much sharpening can create bright or dark halos around high-contrast edges. Lightroom Classic includes sharpening in its camera defaults, and sharpening can also be applied when exporting or printing. Check the rendered output rather than stacking strong editing and output sharpening without review; Adobe documents these sharpening stages in its sharpening guidance.
Correct lens distortion and perspective only when it helps
Lens profiles can correct distortion using camera and lens metadata, while Lightroom Classic also provides controls for chromatic aberration and perspective. For an architectural photo, compare structural lines before and after correction, then inspect the crop: a correction may remove edge content or make the composition feel less convincing. Available profiles depend on whether the file is RAW or non-RAW and on supported lens data (Adobe Lightroom Classic: Lens corrections).
Review the edit at two scales
- Fit the whole image to the screen. Assess overall brightness, atmosphere, and composition. Ask whether the building still feels like a real, dimensional space.
- Inspect at 1:1. Check grain, surface texture, and edge halos. Confirm that noise reduction has not smoothed away masonry, peeling paint, or wood grain.
- Compare with the original. Toggle between the edit and source, and check highlight and shadow clipping. Look for changes that reveal available detail without flattening the scene.
- Compare versions at the same output size. If you are choosing between two edits, evaluate both on the same source and export size.
