The cleanest way to edit a website screenshot is usually to change the live page in Chrome DevTools and capture it again. If you only have a PNG or JPEG, edit that raster image in Photoshop on the web or free, open-source GIMP. If the goal is a redesign that others can edit, bring the captured screen into Figma and rebuild it as design layers.

A screenshot is a raster image. Once browser text has been flattened into pixels, you cannot recover its original font metrics or DOM structure. That is why recapturing a corrected page normally gives sharper type and more faithful spacing than painting over the old pixels.
Workflow 1: change the webpage in Chrome DevTools and capture it again
Use this route when you control the page or can open a development, staging or local copy. It is ideal for correcting a headline, trying a color, testing a responsive layout or hiding an element before making a clean capture.

1. Open the element inspector
- Open the page in Chrome at the URL and state you need.
- Right-click the target element and choose Inspect. DevTools opens with that node selected in the Elements panel.
- For a reliable comparison, first set the intended browser zoom, viewport width and device pixel ratio. Use the device toolbar when you need a phone or tablet width.
2. Edit text, attributes and CSS
In the Elements panel, double-click visible text or choose Edit as HTML to change markup for the live preview. In the Styles pane, edit declarations such as font-size, color, margin, padding and display. You can add a new rule to the selected node to test a change without touching the site files.
Changes made this way exist only in that browser tab. A refresh normally removes them. To make a repeatable edit, use the Sources editor or create a JavaScript Snippet, run it on the page, and save the corresponding HTML, CSS or script in your project. DevTools Workspaces can map local source files so edits are written to disk; otherwise treat the result as a visual experiment.
3. Handle dynamic content before capture
- Wait for fonts, images and client-rendered text to finish loading.
- Scroll through a long page once if images use lazy loading.
- Close cookie notices, newsletter prompts and chat panels, or hide their nodes with a temporary CSS rule.
- For a deterministic state, pause animations or set a fixed viewport and timezone in your test environment.
4. Capture the result
Use the DevTools Command Menu and search for screenshot commands. Chrome can capture the visible viewport, a selected node or the full-size page. For a full-page capture, check the result at its native dimensions: very long pages can expose sticky headers, repeated backgrounds or lazy images that were not visible during the first pass.
5. Make the edit persistent when necessary
A DevTools preview is not a production change. Commit the equivalent source edit in your project, reload the page, and capture again. Keep the original capture separately so reviewers can distinguish a proposed visual from the unmodified page.
Workflow 2: edit an existing PNG or JPEG in Photoshop or GIMP
Choose pixel editing when the live page is unavailable, has changed, or must remain untouched. Photoshop on the web supports uploading an image, selecting markup tools, drawing or annotating directly, and generating non-destructive layers. GIMP is a free, open-source desktop alternative for local work.
Prepare a non-destructive file
- Duplicate the original file before editing. In Photoshop, keep the untouched image as the bottom layer; in GIMP, duplicate the layer and save an editable project file.
- Crop only after deciding what the reader needs. Cropping first reduces accidental edits outside the focus area, but retain the full original for audit or later reuse.
- Work at 100% zoom when inspecting small interface text. Zoomed-out previews can hide halos, one-pixel seams and unreadable redactions.
Replace or annotate visible content
For arrows, labels and highlights, put each mark on its own layer so it can be moved or removed. To replace a word, cover the old pixels with a sampled background, then add new text on a separate layer. Matching the original typeface, weight, anti-aliasing and line height is difficult from pixels alone; if exact typography matters, return to the live-page workflow.
Blur or redact private information correctly
Account numbers, email addresses, API keys, session tokens and personal names should be covered with an opaque fill or a strong blur that cannot be reversed. Extend the mask beyond the text edges and inspect at 100% zoom. Do not rely on a translucent highlight, a small crop that still leaves context, or a blur radius that allows characters to be guessed. Remove metadata if your sharing policy requires it, and verify that hidden layers are not exported.

Export the right format
- PNG: best for crisp interface text, flat color and transparency.
- JPEG: useful when a photographic-style image is acceptable and a smaller file is more important than perfectly sharp text.
After export, reopen the delivered file and confirm its pixel dimensions, color appearance and redactions. Keep the untouched source outside the shared folder.

Figma is the better choice when a screenshot is a starting point for a redesign, design review or collaborative handoff. Capture the production website or relevant section into Figma Design or FigJam, then inspect and reconstruct the screen with editable frames, text and components.
What becomes editable
Figma’s inspection workflow can expose layout, color, typography, text strings, component properties, styles and variables. Replace the captured content with real text layers, apply auto layout where appropriate, and turn repeated controls into components before sharing the file.
Expect reconstruction work
Browser effects do not always transfer cleanly. Web fonts may be unavailable, responsive states may have been captured at only one width, and animations, hover states, video, canvas content and cross-origin assets can require manual replacement. Treat the Figma result as an editable design model, not evidence that every pixel matched the source page at every state.
How to edit a full-page screenshot
- Choose the source. If the page is live, edit it and recapture; if not, open the tall image in an editor that supports large canvases.
- Check dimensions and scale. A full-page image may be several screen heights long. Work at 100% and avoid repeatedly resampling it.
- Separate global and local edits. A header change may repeat down the page, while a single card or paragraph is local. Use layers or selections that prevent accidental changes elsewhere.
- Account for fixed elements. Sticky navigation and floating chat buttons may be repeated or overlap content in a stitched capture. Hide or correct them at the source when possible.
- Export and verify. Scroll through the exported image, inspect the top, middle and bottom, and confirm that lazy-loaded images and redactions remain intact.
How to change text without Photoshop
If you can open the page, use Chrome DevTools: inspect the text node, edit its DOM content, adjust CSS, and capture the result. This preserves browser font rendering and is the most convincing method.
If you only have an image, GIMP provides a local, no-cost path. Add a text layer, sample or recreate the background behind the old words, and export a copy. The result can look natural for short labels, but it cannot restore the original layout logic. For a collaborative redesign, rebuild the text as a Figma text layer rather than painting it into the screenshot.

Privacy, accuracy and copyright checks before sharing
- Retain an untouched original and record which areas were changed.
- Redact secrets and personal data before uploading the file to a web editor or sending it to a collaborator.
- Do not imply that a modified screenshot is an untouched product screen. Label mockups, proposed copy and test states.
- Check the URL, viewport, date and logged-in state if the image will be used as evidence.
- Review at native size after export; compression and scaling can make text appear different from the editing canvas.

The DevTools edit disappears
That is expected for an unsaved browser-side change. Save the equivalent source in a Workspace or project, reload, and capture the persistent version.
The screenshot still contains a popup
Dismiss the popup or hide its DOM node before capture. For automated work, use a capture service that handles consent, newsletter and chat overlays before taking the image.
Text looks jagged after replacement
You edited flattened pixels or exported at a reduced size. Recapture the live page, use a separate text layer, or export PNG at the intended dimensions.

Images are missing in a full-page capture
Lazy-loaded content may not have entered the viewport. Scroll the page before a manual capture or use a full-page capture process that loads lazy images.
A redaction can still be read
The mask is too small, translucent or weakly blurred. Replace it with an opaque block that extends beyond the data, then inspect the exported file at 100%.
The result does not match the intended device
Viewport width, device scale factor, fonts, timezone and logged-in state affect rendering. Set those conditions explicitly and capture again.
