To edit a Tumblr reblog, open the reblog composer and change the commentary or other content you are adding before you publish. You can’t change the original post or earlier contributions in its reblog trail. If you already published your reblog, you can delete your copy from your own blog, but not copies on other people’s blogs.
How to edit your contribution before publishing
-
Find the post you want to reblog and tap or click its reblog button. Tumblr places it near the lower-right of a Dashboard post or near the upper-right of a post’s permalink page, though the layout can vary by screen size and app version. See Tumblr’s Reblogs help page.

In the reblog editor, make your changes to the commentary or other content you are adding, then publish the reblog. Tumblr’s post editor differs between app and web: the app’s content tools appear along the bottom, while the web editor appears at the top of the Dashboard. Details are in Writing Posts.

The editor lets you add your own commentary, pictures, GIFs, or other content. This is the opportunity to revise your addition; it does not give you control over the source author’s post or anyone else’s earlier contribution.

What you can and can’t change in a reblog trail
| What you want to do | What Tumblr allows |
|---|---|
| Change your own addition before publishing | Edit it in the reblog composer. |
| Remove later captions from the reblog trail | Use the X beside the added commentary to remove everything added after the original caption. Tumblr’s documented control removes later captions as a group, not one selected caption. |
| Edit the original post or an earlier reblogger’s words | You can’t edit another person’s contribution from your reblog. |
| Remove the original caption | You can’t remove it using the documented reblog controls. |
| Remove your published reblog from your blog | Delete your copy from your blog using the post menu. This does not delete copies on other users’ blogs. |
Tumblr’s Reblogs help page documents these limits and controls. Because the app and web editor may look different across versions and screen sizes, look for the reblog editor and its X or post menu rather than relying on a specific icon location.
Why your reblog commentary may matter in search
Tumblr says commentary added to a reblog is the part that can be searchable in relevant searches; reblogs with no added content do not appear in global searches. If you want your reblog to be discoverable through your own words, add relevant commentary rather than relying on the original post alone. See Tumblr’s search guidance for reblogs.

In the app, the control is under the three-dot menu; on web, use the settings cog and “Reblog Control.” Tumblr explains these options in Privacy options.
