WordPress core can add the browser’s native loading="lazy" attribute to eligible video iframes, provided the iframe has both width and height attributes. The first content iframe may remain eager so content visible at the top of the page is not delayed.
Use WordPress’s built-in video embedding first
You do not normally need custom JavaScript for a standard YouTube or Vimeo embed.
- Open the post or page in the WordPress block editor.
- Paste the video URL on its own line, or insert an Embed block and choose the relevant service.
- Publish or update the page, then view the public URL.
WordPress documentation lists YouTube and Vimeo among the services supported by its embed workflow. The resulting iframe is processed by WordPress when it passes through eligible post content, excerpts or text widgets.
Does WordPress lazy-load embedded videos automatically?
Since WordPress 5.7, core has supported browser-native lazy loading for eligible iframes. It adds loading="lazy" to the rendered iframe rather than relying on a separate scrolling script.

What makes an iframe eligible?
- The iframe must be handled by the relevant WordPress content-processing path.
- Its markup must include both
widthandheightattributes for the documented automatic behavior. - It must not be excluded by WordPress’s first-content optimization or by another theme or plugin.
Lazy loading tells the browser to defer work for an off-screen iframe until it is nearer the viewport. It does not mean that every video player on every page will wait for a click.
Why the first video may not have the attribute
WordPress 5.9 changed its optimization behavior to skip the first content image or iframe by default. The reason is practical: an element visible immediately when the page opens should not be delayed merely to satisfy a blanket lazy-loading rule. Therefore, a first YouTube embed without loading="lazy" is not automatically evidence of a broken installation.
Check whether lazy loading is working
- Open the published page in a browser.
- Right-click the video and choose Inspect or open the browser’s developer tools.
- Find the rendered
<iframe>element, not just the editor’s block settings. - Check for
loading="lazy", plus usablewidthandheightvalues. - Repeat the check at desktop and mobile viewport sizes.
If the attribute is absent, check whether the iframe is the first content iframe, whether dimensions are missing, and whether a custom block, widget, theme, or optimization plugin is bypassing normal content processing. This inspection confirms the markup actually delivered to visitors; editor settings alone do not.

Three ways to control video loading

No controlled performance comparison establishes that one route is universally fastest. Choose based on the amount of control you need and how your site’s embeds are generated.
Customize iframe behavior with WordPress filters
Developers can change the default with WordPress’s loading-optimization filters. Add code through a site-specific plugin or another controlled PHP deployment process rather than editing a parent theme that may be overwritten during updates.
Change the default by tag and context
The wp_lazy_loading_enabled filter lets code change whether lazy loading is enabled for a particular tag and context. A callback can inspect values such as the tag name and context, then return true or false.

Change an individual iframe
WordPress documents wp_iframe_tag_add_loading_attr for changing an individual iframe. For example, a callback can inspect the iframe HTML and return false for a YouTube iframe in the_content when that specific player must load eagerly.

}, 10, 3 );Use a narrow condition rather than disabling lazy loading for every iframe. A broad rule can make maps, forms and other embedded content load earlier than necessary.

Use a plugin for a click-to-load YouTube facade
A plugin is optional when you want controls beyond core’s native iframe behavior. WP Rocket documents lazy loading for iframe-embedded videos and a YouTube facade that displays a thumbnail before the visitor interacts. With a facade, the full player is requested after interaction instead of being initialized as soon as the iframe approaches the viewport.
Plugin labels and exact settings can change between releases, so follow the current WP Rocket settings screen and verify the generated markup afterward. A facade also needs a stable placeholder size and styling so the page does not jump when the player appears.

Keep dimensions in the embed
Provide both width and height on the iframe, or use a responsive wrapper that reserves the video’s aspect-ratio space. This supports WordPress’s documented eligibility check and gives the browser a predictable box before the player loads.

Do not double-optimize the same iframe
Running a custom script, a theme feature and a plugin on the same embed can produce conflicting attributes or placeholders. Inspect the final HTML and disable overlapping features until one loading strategy is responsible for the player.
Account for above-the-fold placement
If the video is the first content iframe and appears immediately, WordPress may intentionally leave it eager. Moving a video lower on the page, or applying a facade through a plugin, changes the user experience but is a design decision rather than a required fix.
Test logged-out pages and cached variants
Optimization plugins and page caches can serve different HTML to visitors than to administrators. Check a logged-out window and, where applicable, clear the page cache before comparing markup.
Which method should you choose?
- Choose the standard embed if you want the least maintenance and your videos are ordinary post-content embeds.
- Choose a filter if one template, context or provider needs a precise exception and you can maintain PHP safely.
- Choose a plugin facade if you want a configuration-based workflow or a thumbnail-and-interaction experience for YouTube.
Whichever route you use, inspect the public iframe, confirm that dimensions are reserved, and test the page on both desktop and mobile before treating the implementation as complete.
