You earn free PokéCoins by leaving a Pokémon to defend a Gym, but the coins are not credited while it stays there. The Pokémon must return first, and all Gym returns on the same day share a 50-PokéCoin limit. Niantic’s current Help Center does not specify a confirmed coin-per-minute rate or the time needed to reach that limit.
How Gym PokéCoins work
The Defender Bonus rewards free PokéCoins for defending a Gym against challengers from other teams. Longer defense can earn more coins, but a Pokémon still has to return before the reward is credited. Niantic’s Defender Bonus guidance says you’ll receive an in-game notification when it returns, and you can review the reward in Notifications.

How to earn coins from a Gym
- Place a Pokémon at a Gym your team controls, if you are able to join its defenders.
- Let it defend. Opposing-team players who are physically close to the Gym can challenge it. Treating your defender can restore CP and extend its time defending.
- Wait for it to return. If challengers defeat it, it loses CP; when its CP reaches zero, it returns. It may also return through other game events.
- Check the in-game notification or Notifications for the credited reward. The Today View shows your defending Pokémon and progress toward the daily coin limit.
The 50-PokéCoin daily limit
Niantic’s Help Center states that the limit is 50 PokéCoins per day, regardless of how long a Pokémon defended or how many Pokémon return from Gyms that day. The limit applies to your account’s returns that day, not separately to each defender.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat means a long stay does not guarantee a payout above the daily limit. If several Pokémon return on one day, their rewards count toward the same limit. A Pokémon that returns after defending for multiple days does not receive a separate daily allowance for every day it was away; the return day’s limit applies. Niantic notes that the maximum bonus limit may change, so the Today View and current Help Center guidance are the practical places to check.

Is there a confirmed current earning rate?
Niantic’s current Help Center guidance says that longer defense earns more coins and confirms the daily cap, but it does not give a current number of coins per minute or an exact time to reach the cap. Do not treat a rate quoted elsewhere as current official guidance without checking its date and context.
In 2020, Niantic described a limited test that awarded six coins per hour from Gym defense alongside a 50-coin daily cap. The company later said the test would be discontinued in all test countries. That historical test rate is not evidence of a current universal rate: Niantic’s 2020 PokéCoin test announcement.

Gym-earned coins versus purchased PokéCoins
PokéCoins are Pokémon GO’s in-game currency for premium Shop items. Gym coins are earned through the Defender Bonus and credited when the Pokémon returns. Purchased PokéCoins are paid digital currency bought through the game’s authorized purchase flow; they are not a Gym reward. See Niantic’s purchase instructions for details.
