Which purchases can earn points?
Qualifying purchases commonly include apps and games, in-app or in-game items, and subscriptions purchased through Google Play. Google’s US guidance also lists Play Books, and its earn-and-track help includes Google One subscriptions from Android in the applicable context. Supported categories vary by country, so check the local Play Points terms rather than assuming every category is available everywhere.
Points are based on the qualifying item price, excluding tax, and Google rounds the result to a whole point. A purchase below the applicable regional threshold may earn zero. Rates depend on country and membership level. As a US example only, Google lists Bronze at 1 point per $1 USD and Silver at 1.10 points per $1 USD: a $5 purchase would earn 5 points at Bronze and 6 at Silver after rounding 5.50. These figures are not global rates. See Google’s US earn-rate and purchase guidance and Google’s US earn-and-track guidance; use your country’s terms for local rates and eligible content.

Do free app downloads earn points?
Not automatically. Some featured app or game installation promotions award points, but simply downloading any free app is not a general earning method. For an eligible installation offer, Google says you must be installing the app or game for the first time and use it for at least two minutes within the first 24 hours after installation.

Eligibility may also depend on whether you previously downloaded, installed, or used that app, and on your personalization settings, which affect Google’s access to some usage information. Read the specific offer before installing; its terms determine whether your activity qualifies.

Find and check current promotions
In the Play Store, open profile icon > Play Points > Earn. Offers shown there are tied to your account and can change; check the displayed terms and expiry before making a purchase or installing an app.
- Activation: Some offers require you to activate them before the qualifying action.
- Eligibility: An offer may be limited to selected participants based on purchase history or Play Store interaction, or may require an active Play Pass subscription.
- Deadlines and currencies: Offers have their own time limits; some multi-purchase offers require transactions in one currency.
- Subscription bonuses: Certain offers award extra points to first-time subscribers, with a one-time maximum bonus for that status.
- Offer stacking: Multiple promotions do not stack on a single purchase. Google applies the highest available rate during the specified period.
To judge whether an offer is worthwhile, compare its rate with your usual rate for your country and level, then check the activation requirement, deadline, purchase or installation rules, and the value of the points you can redeem.

How points, level progress, and reversals work
Points earned add to both your redeemable balance and your yearly level progress. You can redeem balance points for eligible in-app items or Google Play credit. Points cannot be purchased, transferred between accounts, or converted to cash.

In Google’s US guidance, balance points expire one year after your last point earning or use. Redeeming points does not reduce your level progress. Your level lasts through the end of the following calendar year, with recalculation at the start of the year. If a qualifying purchase is canceled or returned, its associated points and progress are reversed. Changing your billing country causes you to lose your points, and your level does not carry over.

Do gift cards earn Play Points?
Buying a Google Play gift card is not established as a way to earn Play Points. Physical gift cards, where sold by authorized retail partners, add Play balance for eligible Store purchases and are subject to country and currency restrictions. Digital gift cards bought through Google’s gifting feature are excluded from Play Points except for eligible users in select promotions; Play balance and Play Points cannot be used to buy those gift cards. See Google’s guidance on Google Play gift cards and where to buy them and gifted Google Play cards.
