In Survive a Million Monkeys, the game’s two currencies serve different purposes: defeat monkeys to earn temporary Cash for upgrades during a run, then earn persistent Gems from your run to unlock weapons and classes in the hub. You can make progress without redeeming a code by improving each attempt with Cash and reinvesting the Gems you earn afterward.
Cash and Gems do different jobs
The game’s terminology can be confusing if you search for “coins.” AllThingsHow’s beginner guide, updated October 6, 2026, describes two currencies: Cash for the current match and Gems for progression between matches. The official Roblox listing confirms the game’s broad gun-and-class progression, but does not explain the ordinary currency loop; the details below come from the guide.

| Currency | How the guide says you earn it | Where it is spent | Does it carry over? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash | Defeating monkeys during a run | In-run weapon and health upgrades, grenades, and barricades | No; it is temporary and lasts only for that run |
| Gems | After a run, based on monkeys and waves cleared | In the hub, to unlock weapons and classes for later runs | Yes; it is the persistent progression currency |
Earn and spend Cash during a run
Each defeated monkey adds Cash, according to the guide. Use it to make the current attempt more survivable rather than treating it as a bank for future matches.
What Cash can buy
- Weapon tiers: Upgrade your weapon to improve combat capability.
- Health: Increase your ability to withstand attacks.
- Grenades: Use area damage against groups; the guide describes these as a fixed-cost option, not an upgrade path.
- Barricades: Place a defensive obstacle; these also have a fixed cost and are not independently upgradeable.
The guide reports these keyboard shortcuts: V upgrades the weapon, C upgrades health, G throws a grenade, X places a barricade, and Q activates the Ultimate. Controls may differ by device or change with an update, so check the current in-game prompts if a key does not work.

Spend before the run gets harder
AllThingsHow recommends using Cash before difficulty spikes, instead of holding it while the threat grows. Its other suggested tactics are to move through open areas to avoid being surrounded, let monkeys cluster before using area damage, and deal with fast monkeys that could cut off an escape route. These are guide-reported tips, not official developer advice or independently verified test results.
Use Gems to unlock future-run upgrades
After the run, the guide says your Gem reward depends on the monkeys and waves you cleared. Spend those Gems in the hub to unlock weapons and classes; those unlocks are available in later runs, unlike Cash upgrades.

Choose weapons to reduce time in the starting tier
The guide describes four in-run weapon tiers and recommends investing Gems in stronger hub weapon options so you spend less time in the starting handgun tier. Treat this as a suggested priority rather than a guaranteed best purchase: the guide does not provide a universal ranking for every player or situation.
Unlock a class that suits your approach
The hub classes named in the guide are Survivor, Medic, Engineer, Juggernaut, Bomber, and Outlaw. The guide does not establish one as best for everyone, so choose based on the role you want to try and the way you prefer to handle a run.

A simple code-free progression loop
- Start a run and defeat monkeys. This earns Cash for that attempt.
- Spend Cash as pressure rises. Improve your weapon or health, or use a grenade or barricade when it helps you survive.
- Clear as many monkeys and waves as you can. The guide says both factor into the Gems awarded after the run.
- Return to the hub and spend Gems. Unlock weapons or classes that carry into future attempts.
- Repeat with the new unlocks. Stronger future-run options give you another chance to last longer and earn more progress.
What “without codes” means here
This method relies on ordinary play: earning Cash by defeating monkeys and Gems from run results. The Roblox listing advertises the code MONKEYS for 1,000 Gems, but it is not needed for the progression loop above; the listing alone does not establish whether that code can currently be redeemed in-game.
