How to Dump PS5 Game Files and Firmware for Emulation: What Sony Supports—and What It Doesn’t

By Freedom251 Team · · 14 min read

Short answer: Sony’s PS5 USB backup feature does not produce emulator-readable game packages, decrypted files, firmware images, or keys. Sony documents backing up and restoring console data, and separately documents installing an official update package. As of October 13, 2026, no complete, independently verified and supported procedure has been established for dumping retail PS5 games and firmware for use with a PS5 emulator.

You can safely follow Sony’s backup and update procedures for their intended purposes. Treat any emulator project’s instructions as unverified claims unless they provide reproducible technical evidence, and do not download or redistribute copyrighted game files, firmware, or keys.

What the PS5 can officially back up

Sony’s documented USB operation is a console backup and restore workflow. On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5. The console lets you choose categories that can include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Games and applications
  • Saved data
  • Screenshots and video clips
  • System settings

The resulting backup is intended to be restored to a PS5. Sony’s support instructions do not describe the files as a game-image format, a decrypted package, a firmware dump, or an emulator key set. A successful backup therefore does not demonstrate that an emulator can read any of its contents.

The category names are also not a published file specification. “Games and applications” tells you what the console can place in a restore archive, not whether individual game data is exposed as a portable image, whether it remains encrypted, or whether another program can reconstruct it. Without a documented layout and a compatible parser, copying folders from the drive is only copying backup data.

USB formats and storage types

Sony lists USB drives formatted as FAT32 or exFAT for the backup process, while warning that not every device is guaranteed to work. USB extended storage used for installing or moving game data is a different storage mode and cannot be used as the destination for PS5 backup data. Formatting a drive for one purpose does not convert its contents into emulator input files.

This distinction matters when planning a backup. A drive that has been configured as PS5 USB extended storage is not simply another name for a backup disk. You may need a separate, appropriately formatted device, and you should follow Sony’s instructions before reformatting anything that contains data you want to keep. Sony’s support material does not promise that a particular capacity, brand, transfer speed, or enclosure will work; it only identifies the supported format types and cautions that compatibility varies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restoring a backup

Restoration is also console-specific. Sony states that the destination PS5’s system software must be the same version or newer than the software installed when the backup was created. This requirement is about restoring a backup to another PS5; it is not a compatibility requirement for an emulator and does not imply that the backup contains a portable firmware image.

If a restore fails because of the version rule, updating the destination PS5 to an equal or newer system-software version addresses the condition Sony documents. It does not turn the archive into a dump, and it does not establish that an older console version can be safely downgraded. Downgrading is separately identified as a restricted activity in Sony’s Canadian license.

Why a console backup is not an emulator dump

An emulator generally needs a documented set of inputs such as a game image in a supported format, system firmware components, and, for some systems, cryptographic keys. Sony’s backup article does not promise any of those outputs. It describes an archive that the PS5 itself can restore.

Question Sony’s documented backup workflow What an emulator would require
Primary purpose Restore selected user and console data to a PS5 Supply system and game data that emulator software can parse
Source Official PS5 Settings menu A separately documented extraction or preparation process
Output described by Sony Backup data for PS5 restoration Not stated by Sony; no emulator-readable format is specified
Game content status Included as part of a console backup category, without a published image format Would need a known, supported image or package format
Firmware status Not identified as a firmware image or dump Would need firmware components accepted by a particular emulator
Compatibility evidence Restoration to a PS5, subject to Sony’s version rule No independent compatibility evidence established for the backup archive
Vendor support Covered by Sony’s console restore instructions Depends on the emulator project’s own documentation and testing
Legal context Use of Sony’s supported backup feature May involve copyright, license, authentication, or circumvention questions that vary by jurisdiction

Changing a file extension, copying folders from the backup drive, or placing the archive in an emulator directory cannot establish the missing format or decrypt data that the documentation never says is exported. A larger or faster USB drive improves neither the archive’s format nor its legal status. The physical storage device is an accessory for the supported backup workflow, not a bridge between a PS5 and an emulator.

Firmware update packages versus firmware extracted from a console

Sony’s system-software support instructions cover downloading and installing an official update package. They direct the user to save the update as PS5UPDATE.PUP and warn against downloading or installing update data other than the official file provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

That is an official update package, not a documented method for extracting the firmware currently installed on a console. The update process tells you how to apply Sony’s package to a PS5; it does not say that the package is an emulator-ready firmware image, that it contains all keys an emulator needs, or that a console can export equivalent files.

Using an official update file for its intended purpose

  1. Obtain the update package from Sony’s official system-software support channel.
  2. Use the filename Sony specifies: PS5UPDATE.PUP. Do not rename it to imitate a dump format.
  3. Follow Sony’s installation instructions for the supported update mode.
  4. Do not install files from unofficial mirrors or packages that claim to be modified firmware.

If an emulator project asks for a file with this name, that request is the project’s own compatibility claim. It is not evidence that Sony designed the update package for emulation or that the project has validated every required component. An update package can be authentic and still be unsuitable for a particular emulator, whose developers may require additional files or a different preparation process.

Version and downgrade pitfalls

Keep three ideas separate: the version installed on a PS5, the version represented by an official update package, and the version an emulator project says it accepts. Sony’s restore rule concerns the first of these when moving a backup to another PS5. It does not promise backward compatibility, and it is not permission to bypass version checks. Sony’s Canadian license specifically lists downgrading among restricted activities, subject to applicable local law.

What third-party emulator documentation does—and does not—prove

Some project pages describe a PS5 emulator, request game files and firmware, or provide setup instructions. Those pages can explain what the project authors expect as input, but an instruction page is not independent proof that the emulator is mature, compatible with commercial PS5 games, or capable of using files obtained through Sony’s backup tools.

Claims associated with RPCS5

RPCS5’s site presents a PS5 emulator and gives instructions for game files and firmware. The available Sony documentation does not corroborate those instructions, and no independent compatibility record was established for this article. Do not treat the project’s setup page alone as a tested method for running retail PS5 games. Before trusting such a claim, look for versioned releases, reproducible logs, clearly identified test titles, and reports from sources other than the project’s own promotional pages.

Do not confuse an emulator that runs on PS5 with a PS5 emulator

The repository named ProsperoEden describes an experimental Nintendo Switch emulator port for PS5 homebrew. Its notes refer to user-supplied Switch keys, firmware, and game files. Those are Nintendo Switch inputs. A program running on a PS5 is not thereby an emulator for PS5 games, and its requirements do not document a PS5-game dumping workflow.

This host-versus-target distinction is useful when reading headlines and repository names. “For PS5” can describe software that runs on Sony’s hardware, while “PS5 emulator” describes software that imitates the PS5 on another platform. Requirements for one category cannot be transferred to the other.

Community homebrew guides

Community-authored PS5 homebrew guides discuss experimental emulators and firmware-specific setups and advise readers to check upstream release notes because the situation changes quickly. They are useful context for volatility, but they do not establish an authoritative or supported process for dumping retail PS5 games.

Release notes can change the required filenames, directory layout, supported firmware versions, or list of working titles. A guide that worked for an earlier build may be obsolete after an update. Treat every claimed workflow as time-sensitive, and verify that the documentation matches the exact release rather than assuming that an old tutorial remains valid.

If your goal is a legitimate PS5 backup

For protecting your own saves, captures, settings, and reinstallable console data, use Sony’s supported workflow rather than attempting to make the backup serve an unrelated purpose.

  1. Prepare a USB drive that is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. A drive configured as PS5 USB extended storage is not usable for backup data.
  2. Connect the drive directly to the PS5 and open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore.
  3. Select Back Up Your PS5.
  4. Select the categories you want to include, such as games and applications, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings.
  5. Allow the process to finish before disconnecting the drive.
  6. For a restore, connect the backup drive to the destination PS5 and use the same Back Up and Restore area. Ensure that the destination system software is the same version or newer than the version present when the backup was made.

This procedure protects data for PS5 restoration. It does not create a portable game dump, and a larger or faster USB drive does not change that limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the PS5 rejects the drive

  • The drive is in extended-storage mode: extended storage and backup storage are separate functions. Reconfigure or use a different drive according to Sony’s backup instructions; do not assume that moving the drive between modes preserves both data sets.
  • The format is unsupported: Sony identifies FAT32 and exFAT for this workflow. Check the drive’s format before starting.
  • The device is simply incompatible: Sony cautions that not all USB devices work. Trying a compliant drive is more appropriate than altering backup files.
  • Restore is blocked by software version: update the destination PS5 so its system software is at least as new as the version used when the backup was made.

What a USB purchase can and cannot solve

An external USB drive is a limited-fit accessory for Sony’s documented backup process. Buying one may be useful if you need a place to store a console backup, but no storage capacity, interface speed, or brand turns that backup into emulator input. There is no verified product, cable, or drive that supplies missing firmware components, keys, or a game-image format. Avoid spending money on hardware advertised as a guaranteed “PS5 dumper” unless the seller provides evidence that can be independently reproduced.

How to assess an emulator’s claimed input requirements

If you encounter a project that says it accepts PS5 games or firmware, evaluate the claim before connecting a console or downloading files. The following checks separate a reproducible technical project from an unsubstantiated setup page.

Check whether the project identifies exact formats

A credible technical document should name the expected file or directory structure, explain how the emulator validates it, and distinguish encrypted source data from data prepared for execution. “Copy your backup to this folder” is not a format specification. Look for a release-specific description, checksums or validation messages, and an explanation of which components are optional or mandatory.

Look for reproducible compatibility information

Useful evidence includes a versioned release, supported operating systems, a documented test title, logs showing successful boot, and known limitations. A list of requirements without test results does not establish that commercial games run. Independent testers should be able to repeat the result using legally obtained inputs without relying on a private developer build.

Separate official facts from project assertions

Sony’s menu paths, USB-format guidance, update filename, and restore-version rule are official statements about PS5 operations. A third-party page’s statement that an update file can be installed by an emulator is a claim by that project. Keep those categories separate when deciding whether to proceed.

Check the date and release scope

PS5 homebrew and emulator projects can change rapidly. Confirm the publication date, the exact emulator build, and the firmware versions covered. A page that does not identify those details cannot tell you whether its instructions apply to your console. Community advice to read upstream release notes is especially important for experimental software.

Reject requests for unauthorized files

Do not use links offering someone else’s game dumps, firmware images, or cryptographic keys. Apart from copyright and license concerns, those files can be modified, incomplete, or malicious. The absence of a safe, verified source is a reason to stop, not a reason to search for a less reputable one.

Legal and licensing considerations

Sony’s Canadian PS5 System Software Licence Agreement treats system software and firmware as licensed for use on the PS5. It lists restrictions that include bypassing PS5 encryption, security, or authentication mechanisms, obtaining system software through unauthorized methods, downgrading, and unauthorized distribution. The agreement says those limits apply to the greatest extent permitted by local law.

That document is a Canadian regional license, not a universal statement of copyright, interoperability, backup, or circumvention law. Other jurisdictions may have different exceptions or restrictions, and the practical legal result can depend on what you copy, how you bypass a protection, and what you do with the result. If your question concerns personal backups, interoperability, or circumvention, obtain advice specific to your country or region.

Regardless of jurisdiction, do not present a console backup as permission to distribute game files or firmware. Do not publish or share keys, and do not direct readers to unauthorized downloads. A personal backup need not be legally equivalent to making an emulator package available to other people, and Sony’s license terms should not be read as a complete legal code for every country.

Common misconceptions

“The backup contains my installed game, so it must be a game dump.”

Installed content being included in a console backup category does not tell you its internal format, encryption state, or whether software outside the PS5 can parse it. Sony documents restoration to a PS5, not extraction for another runtime.

“The .PUP file is the console’s firmware dump.”

PS5UPDATE.PUP is the filename Sony specifies for an official update package. An update package and a forensic or emulator-oriented dump are different concepts; Sony’s instructions document only the update operation.

“A project has a setup guide, so it has been proven.”

Documentation can describe an intended design without demonstrating compatibility. Look for independent, reproducible evidence rather than relying on the existence of a guide.

“An emulator running on PS5 proves PS5 emulation works.”

Software can run on a PS5 while emulating an entirely different console. ProsperoEden’s Switch-emulation notes illustrate why the host platform and the emulated platform must be identified separately.

“A different USB format will reveal the files.”

Changing FAT32 to exFAT, or moving a disk between backup and extended-storage modes, changes how the PS5 recognizes the device. It does not decrypt content or create a published game-image format. Reformatting can also remove data, so it is not a substitute for a documented extraction process.

A practical decision tree

  • You need disaster recovery for your PS5: use Sony’s Back Up and Restore menu with a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive.
  • You need to update a PS5: use Sony’s official update package and the specified PS5UPDATE.PUP filename.
  • You want to run retail PS5 games in an emulator: pause. No complete, independently verified, supported dumping procedure was established here. Confirm the emulator’s current status and legal position before doing anything.
  • You found a guide that promises a one-click dump: check whether it explains formats, encryption, keys, reproducible tests, and provenance. If it does not, do not risk your console or your data.
  • You are considering sharing files: do not distribute game data, firmware, or keys without clear legal authorization.
  • You are asked to disable security or install modified system software: stop and obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice. Sony’s Canadian license identifies circumvention, unauthorized acquisition, and downgrading as restricted activities, subject to local law.

What would count as a verified dumping method?

A reliable method would need more than a menu path or a project’s assertion. It would identify the console software version and hardware assumptions, describe each extraction step, state exactly which files are produced, explain how encryption and authentication are handled lawfully, and show that an independently reproducible emulator build accepts those files. It would also document failures, supported game versions, and any regional or legal limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The currently documented Sony operations do not provide that evidence. They establish a supported way to back up PS5 data and a supported way to install an official update; they do not establish an end-to-end retail-game and firmware dump workflow for emulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Back Up Your PS5 create ISO files or emulator-ready game folders?

Sony’s support article describes a restore archive for PS5 console data. It does not identify an ISO, decrypted package, emulator directory structure, or other emulator-readable output.

Can I use a PS5 USB extended-storage drive for a backup?

No. Sony distinguishes USB extended storage from the FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB storage used for the backup workflow. Extended storage cannot be used as the backup destination.

Is PS5UPDATE.PUP a firmware dump?

No. Sony identifies PS5UPDATE.PUP as the filename for an official system-software update package. The instructions do not describe extracting the firmware installed on a console or preparing an emulator image.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Does RPCS5 prove that PS5 games can be emulated?

Its site makes that project’s own claims and provides setup instructions, but those claims were not independently corroborated here. Look for versioned releases, reproducible tests, and independent compatibility evidence.

Is ProsperoEden documentation a PS5 game-dumping guide?

No. ProsperoEden describes an experimental Nintendo Switch emulator port that runs as PS5 homebrew. Its keys, firmware, and game files are Nintendo Switch inputs, not PS5 retail-game dumps.

Can I legally dump my own PS5 games?

The answer depends on your country’s copyright, interoperability, backup, and circumvention rules and on what method you use. Sony’s Canadian license restricts bypassing encryption, security, or authentication and obtaining software through unauthorized methods, while qualifying its limits by local law. Obtain local legal advice for a specific situation.

What should I do if a guide asks for firmware or keys from an unofficial download?

Do not download or redistribute them. Unofficial files may be unauthorized, incomplete, modified, or malicious, and the project’s request does not establish legal permission or technical validity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What USB drive should I buy for this purpose?

For Sony’s documented backup workflow, use a drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, recognizing that Sony cautions not every device works. No drive, capacity, or speed makes a console backup emulator-readable, so avoid buying hardware marketed as a guaranteed PS5 dump solution.

The Bottom Line

Sony supports backing up PS5 data to compatible FAT32 or exFAT USB storage and installing an official PS5UPDATE.PUP package. Those operations are not documented methods for producing emulator-ready game files, firmware images, or keys. Third-party setup pages, including RPCS5 claims, remain unverified without independent compatibility evidence. Use Sony’s tools for console recovery, treat emulation claims cautiously, and consult local legal advice before any activity involving circumvention or personal game backups.
