When you meet farm equipment on a rural road, slow down early, leave plenty of room, and wait to pass until it is legal and you can see enough clear road to complete the maneuver safely. Tractors, combines, wagons and trucks may be slow, wide, hard to see around, and preparing to turn into a field.
Why harvest traffic needs extra caution
Harvest brings tractors, combines, grain carts, wagons and trucks carrying agricultural products onto public roads. Some equipment travels at or below 25 mph and can occupy most of a lane or more. A car moving at ordinary road speed can close the gap quickly, while the equipment may stop, turn or maneuver around a roadside obstacle.

Harvest timing varies by region and crop, so do not assume a road will be clear because it is outside the busiest season elsewhere. Oregon reported an average of 32 farm-equipment crashes per year over the preceding five years, with about four serious injuries per year; fatal crashes occurred in 2020 and 2022, according to its 2025 release. Those are Oregon counts, not national totals or a measure of an individual driver’s risk. Maryland reported 185 crashes, including three fatalities, involving farm equipment on state roads since 2020 in 2024. The differing time windows and lack of comparable exposure data mean these totals should not be used to rank states or compare risk rates.

How to approach and follow farm equipment
Look well ahead and ease off the accelerator as soon as you see machinery. Brake gradually, avoid distractions and leave a gap rather than following closely: equipment can stop suddenly or need room to avoid an obstacle. Oregon advises motorists to stay at least 50 feet behind large farm equipment. That is Oregon’s recommendation, not a nationwide legal minimum; allow more room when speed, visibility, road or weather conditions call for it.

Do not pressure a driver to move onto the shoulder. The operator may need to reach a suitable pull-off, and a shoulder can be soft, wet or sloped enough to be unsafe for heavy machinery. Leave extra time for rural trips, and consider another route when practical instead of making an impatient pass.
When it is safe to pass—and when to wait
Pass only where local law permits and you have enough visible, clear road to get completely by and return to your lane without forcing oncoming traffic to brake or cutting in close. Do not pass in a no-passing zone or where curves, hills, intersections, railroad crossings, bridges or similar hazards restrict visibility or prohibit passing.

Check for turn signals or hand signals before moving out, but do not infer the driver’s plan from the machine’s position alone. Farm equipment may swing wide in either direction: a machine slowing or moving right may be setting up for a wide left turn, and equipment turning right may swing left first. Mailboxes, signs, bridges or other roadside obstacles can also cause a machine to move toward the center of the road.

Do not assume the operator sees or hears your car, and do not treat a wave as permission to pass illegally or without adequate sight distance. If you cannot confidently judge the driver’s intent, the road ahead, available width or oncoming traffic, wait.

Watch for equipment at fields and intersections
Scan side roads, farm driveways and field entrances: machinery may enter or cross the road with little warning. Tall crops can block sightlines, and equipment has blind spots, especially while backing or making tight turns. Keep a careful lookout at intersections and during dawn or dusk, when visibility may be limited even as harvest work continues. Avoid lingering beside a machine where its operator may not be able to see you.
What warning signs and emblems tell you
Indiana’s guidance says machinery traveling under 25 mph is required there to display a slow-moving-vehicle emblem. The orange triangle warns that a vehicle is slow-moving; it does not tell you that a pass is safe or that the operator has seen you. Indiana also recommends visible, working lights. NIOSH cautions that equipment may not always have reflective signs or lighting, so judge the actual speed, distance, visibility and turn intent rather than relying on warning devices alone.

These details are jurisdiction-specific, not nationwide rules. Passing restrictions, equipment requirements and local signs vary by state. The Federal Highway Administration describes agricultural equipment on public roads as involving complex interactions and state and federal regulations; its guide is context, not a current state-law lookup. Check the rules for the state where you are driving rather than applying Indiana’s emblem requirement or Oregon’s following-distance advice everywhere.
