Use local AI to organize and tailor your real experience—not to invent a stronger-sounding version of it. Give the model the job description and verified notes about your background, ask it to match evidence to requirements and flag gaps, then draft and fact-check the letter yourself.
Gather the facts before you prompt
Start with the application instructions and job description. Make a short fact sheet so the model has enough context to help without having to guess.

- Role: the exact title and, if supplied, requisition or reference number.
- Employer: the organization’s correct name and one specific reason you are interested, based on information you have verified.
- Needs: three or four central skills, responsibilities, or qualifications stated in the job description.
- Your evidence: examples from work, study, volunteering, projects, or other relevant activities. Note what you did and the outcome only when you know it.
- Constraints: any requested format, length, submission method, or other application instructions.
Keep evidence distinct from interpretation. For example, a project you completed is a fact; saying it proves you can lead a team may need more context. Include personal or sensitive information only if you are comfortable with the software setup and its data path.

“Local AI” usually means a downloaded model processes prompts on your computer. It does not automatically mean that the computer is disconnected from the internet or that every feature in an AI application runs locally.

LM Studio
LM Studio’s offline-operation guide says downloaded-model chat, document chat, and local serving can work without an internet connection. Its privacy policy, effective June 2026, distinguishes local use from connectivity for searching for or downloading models and checking for software updates, as well as optional cloud features such as cloud models or web search. Verify that you have selected a downloaded local model rather than a cloud feature.
Ollama
Ollama’s privacy policy, last updated March 2026, says prompts and data are not seen when models run locally, while cloud-hosted models process prompts and responses transiently. That is the vendor’s stated policy, not an independent network-traffic audit; check whether you are using a local or hosted model.
These statements describe vendor practices, not a guarantee that your entire computer is isolated or that your information is perfectly confidential. The sources do not establish a best model, a minimum hardware specification, or a quality ranking for cover-letter writing. Requirements and performance depend on the runtime, model, quantization, operating system, and computer.

Ask the model to match evidence, not manufacture it
First ask for analysis rather than a polished letter. A useful prompt is:
Here is the job description and my verified experience notes. Identify the main requirements. Match each requirement only to evidence explicitly present in my notes. Flag any requirement with no evidence. Suggest two examples for the body of a one-page cover letter. Do not add achievements, metrics, skills, or employer facts that are not in the materials. Then draft an opening, one or two evidence paragraphs, and a concise close. Mark every statement I need to verify.
Ask the model to label the note or example supporting each proposed claim. If it cannot point to evidence, treat the claim as a gap, not as a fact to keep. You can also ask for alternate structures or tones, but choose only details you can personally substantiate.
This use of AI aligns with Harvard FAS guidance to identify role skills, suggest relevant experience from an applicant’s resume, revise a paragraph for a job description, and provide feedback from a recruiter’s perspective. Its guidance is available at AI and your job search.

Use the analysis to select one or two examples that connect clearly to the employer’s stated needs. A practical order is:
- Opening: Name the role and give a specific, genuine reason for applying to this organization.
- Evidence: Describe what you did in one or two relevant situations and explain how that experience relates to the role.
- Close: Express interest in discussing your fit and end directly and professionally.
Berkeley’s career guidance emphasizes linking qualifications to the position’s requirements and showing knowledge of the specific organization. See Cover Letters. Avoid generic praise that could be sent to any employer; use an organization detail only if you have checked it.

Audit every claim before sending
Read the draft sentence by sentence against your notes and the employer’s materials. AI can help surface relevant experience and improve phrasing, but it cannot supply missing context or take responsibility for your final claims.
- Confirm names, role titles, dates, organization details, figures, and stated outcomes.
- Remove accomplishments, skills, metrics, or employer facts that your notes do not support.
- Replace broad claims with concrete actions and examples you can explain in an interview.
- Cut repeated points, generic praise, and wording that does not sound like you.
- Read the letter aloud, proofread it, and follow the employer’s file and submission instructions.
Harvard’s 2026 cover-letter guidance recommends a one-page letter with three to four short paragraphs, concrete examples, an employer-specific opening, active language, and careful proofreading. Treat the length advice as guidance rather than a universal rule; the employer’s instructions take priority. See Cover Letter Tips.
