The official way to download a video you uploaded is YouTube Studio. On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio, open Content, select the video, open its menu, and choose Download. YouTube provides an MP4 copy, documented as 720p or 360p depending on the video’s size. On Android, the YouTube app and YouTube Studio app offer Save to device for eligible uploads.
You cannot use that owner-download control to export another creator’s video as a normal MP4. For other people’s videos, YouTube’s official option is Premium offline playback, which keeps the download inside the YouTube app instead of creating a portable video file.

Decide first whether you need an ordinary file for editing, backup or transfer, or simply want to watch inside YouTube without an internet connection. Only the owner-download and Google Takeout routes provide an export that is intended as a file. Premium and SD-card downloads are managed by the app.

Download one of your uploads on a computer
This is the shortest official process for obtaining an individual upload.
- Open YouTube Studio and sign in to the Google account that owns the channel.
- In the left navigation, select Content. The page lists your uploaded videos, including videos and Shorts.
- Find the video you want. Use the search or filters if the channel has many uploads.
- Open the video’s Menu (the three-dot control).
- Select Download and let the browser save the file.
The owner-download function returns an MP4. YouTube’s current owner-download guidance specifies 720p or 360p depending on the video’s size, so do not assume that the downloaded copy will preserve the original upload resolution. A large source video may therefore be returned at a lower documented resolution than the file you originally uploaded.
Where the downloaded file goes
The browser uses its normal download location unless you have configured a different folder. On a computer, the result is a conventional MP4 that you can move, rename, back up or open in compatible editing software. YouTube does not require the Studio page to remain open after the download has completed.
If the Download command is missing
A missing command is normally an eligibility issue rather than a browser problem. Check the troubleshooting section below before trying another site. Repeated attempts do not bypass restrictions, and third-party downloaders are not required for an eligible upload.

Save your own video on Android
YouTube documents two Android paths. Both are for videos uploaded to the signed-in account.
Using the main YouTube app
- Open YouTube and tap your profile picture.
- Select Your videos.
- Choose Shorts or Videos, depending on the upload.
- Open the video’s Menu.
- Tap Save to device.
Using the YouTube Studio app
- Open YouTube Studio and sign in to the channel that owns the upload.
- Tap Content.
- Open the Shorts or Videos tab.
- Tap the video’s Menu.
- Choose Save to device.
The app may save the video into the device’s normal media or download area, subject to Android permissions and available storage. The important distinction is ownership: these commands are documented for your uploads, not for arbitrary videos you happen to watch.
What about iPhone and iPad?
The supplied owner-download instructions specify YouTube Studio on a computer and the two Android app paths. They do not establish an equivalent iOS owner-download menu. If you use an iPhone or iPad, use YouTube Studio on a computer or Google Takeout for a documented export rather than assuming that an iOS menu has the same capability.
Download all your uploads with Google Takeout
If you are archiving a channel, recovering a large library or moving content between accounts, Google Takeout is the official bulk option documented for downloading all videos you uploaded.

- Open Google Takeout while signed in to the account that owns the channel.
- Choose the YouTube data category and leave the video data selected.
- Continue through Takeout’s export settings, including the archive format and delivery method offered for your account.
- Create the export and wait for Google to prepare it.
- Download the resulting archive and extract it locally.
Takeout is better suited to a channel-wide backup than to grabbing one clip quickly. It also avoids repeatedly opening individual video menus, but the resulting archive can be large and may take time to prepare. Keep enough free space for both the archive and the extracted files.
Why another creator’s video is different
YouTube’s owner-download guidance explicitly says that you can download videos you have already uploaded and that you cannot download other users’ YouTube videos through that function. This is why the same Download control does not appear for a random public video.
For an eligible video from another creator, YouTube Premium provides official offline playback on supported computers and mobile devices. The download is tied to your account and the YouTube app’s Downloads area. It is not exported as an MP4 that you can place in a file manager, edit in another program or send as an independent attachment.
Supported computer browsers for Premium offline viewing
YouTube documents Premium downloads on computers using Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera. A supported browser alone is not enough: Premium membership, the video’s eligibility and availability in your country or region also matter.

How long Premium downloads remain available
Premium downloads generally require an internet reconnection within 29 days. In some countries or regions, the offline period is 48 hours instead. The app checks the account and service status when it reconnects. If your Premium membership ends, access to downloaded videos ends as well.
Premium device limits
YouTube documents offline features on up to 10 devices at a time, with up to four device swaps per year. These limits apply to the Premium account, not to a single video file. Replacing devices repeatedly can therefore affect your ability to use offline playback on a new phone or computer.
Use an SD card for eligible Android downloads
YouTube supports storing eligible downloads on an SD card for users who meet its download requirements. The card is useful when a phone’s internal storage is limited, but it does not turn a YouTube download into an ordinary MP4.
- Insert a compatible microSD card into the Android device.
- Open YouTube and tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings.
- Select Background & downloads.
- Turn on Use SD card.
YouTube lists eligibility that includes Premium membership, living in a country where downloads are available, or downloading a video you uploaded. When the setting is enabled, eligible downloads use the card instead of internal storage. The files remain controlled by YouTube and are intended for playback through the app; they should not be treated as gallery files that another player can freely open.

When YouTube disables Download or Save to device
The control can be unavailable even when you own the channel. YouTube’s Android troubleshooting guidance identifies several specific causes:
- The video was removed.
- The upload has a copyright strike.
- The upload has a Community Guidelines strike.
- The video uses a preapproved audio track.
- You have already downloaded that individual video five times during the previous 24 hours.
The five-download rule applies to each individual video during a rolling 24-hour period. Waiting for the limit to clear is the documented response; switching browsers or reinstalling the app does not change the account-side count.
Practical checks before retrying
- Confirm that you are signed in to the channel that owns the upload, not merely a Google account with access to YouTube.
- Check whether the video still appears under Content and whether it has a strike or audio restriction.
- Verify that the computer has enough free storage for the MP4 or that Android has room on the selected storage device.
- On Android, confirm that the app has current permission to save media and that the SD card is mounted if you selected SD-card storage.
- If the video is another creator’s upload, stop looking for an owner-download command; use Premium offline playback where it is available and appropriate.

This distinction answers the common question “Can I save a YouTube video without a third-party site?” Yes, when it is your upload and the official owner-download control is available. For someone else’s video, the official no-third-party route is offline viewing, not a freely transferable video file.

- Identify ownership. If the upload is yours, continue with Studio, the Android owner menu or Takeout. If it belongs to someone else, do not expect an MP4 export.
- Choose the device. Use YouTube Studio on a computer for one file, Android’s Save to device for a phone copy, or Takeout for a complete library.
- Choose the storage behavior. Use a normal saved file when you need editing or independent backup. Use Premium or SD-card downloads when YouTube playback is sufficient.
- Check eligibility. Strikes, removed videos, preapproved audio and the five-download limit can hide the command.
- Plan for persistence. An MP4 remains available as a file after download. Premium and SD-card content remains subject to YouTube’s account, app, regional and reconnection rules.
What the official methods do not promise
YouTube’s documented owner-download resolution is limited to 720p or 360p depending on video size. The guidance does not promise the original source file, every available resolution, or a separate audio-only export. It also does not establish that an app-managed offline download can be copied out and used by another player.
Availability can change by country, device, account status and video status. Before relying on offline access for travel, confirm that the feature is offered in your region and test the exact account and device you will use. For a lasting archive of your own work, keep the original upload files in your own storage as well as using Studio or Takeout.
