Sign in with the account that bought each item, review its purchase history, buy any remaining games or DLC before the cutoff, then download the base game, every owned add-on and every available update. Launch each title once and verify its downloadable content. Keep the console, account credentials, authentication method and enough compatible storage available, and do not delete local copies merely because the store still offers redownloads.
What a storefront closure actually changes
“The store is closing” can describe several separate services. A provider may stop accepting new purchases while continuing to authenticate old purchases and serve downloads. It may later stop patches, account transfers, online play or other network features on a different date. Treat each service as its own deadline.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Sales: whether you can buy a game, expansion, season pass or other downloadable item for the first time.
- Redownloads: whether an item previously tied to your account can be downloaded again after deletion.
- Updates: whether the provider still serves patches, compatibility fixes or title updates.
- Entitlement checks: whether the console can confirm that your account owns the game or DLC.
- Online functions: multiplayer, leaderboards, cloud features and other communication services, which may have a separate shutdown date.
- Transfers: whether purchases and licenses can move to another console or account system.
A redownload allowance covers a purchase already recorded against your account. It does not turn unpurchased DLC into a free entitlement. If an expansion is still for sale, purchase it before the published sales cutoff if you want it in your library.
Post-closure wording also matters. “For the foreseeable future” means access is currently intended to continue but is not a perpetual guarantee. Save the provider’s exact notice and date, and keep local copies whenever practical.

Nintendo’s confirmed Wii U and 3DS dates
Nintendo’s support documentation provides a clear example of separate lifecycles. For Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, sales of software and DLC ended at 5:00 PM Pacific Time on March 27, 2023. Nintendo’s notice says previously purchased games and DLC could still be redownloaded “for the foreseeable future,” and that software updates would remain available on those systems. Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS discontinuation Q&A repeats that policy.
| Service | Nintendo’s published status | What it means for your preparation |
|---|---|---|
| New Wii U and 3DS software or DLC sales | Ended at 5:00 PM Pacific, March 27, 2023 | Items not purchased by the cutoff are not covered by the redownload allowance. |
| Redownloads of previously purchased games and DLC | Available “for the foreseeable future” | Keep the purchasing account and console usable; the wording is not a permanent promise. |
| Software updates | Nintendo said they would remain available for the foreseeable future | Download updates while the servers still provide them. |
| Wii Shop Channel purchases | Previously purchased content could, “for the time being,” be redownloaded or transferred from Wii to Wii U | Do not interpret this as an assurance of indefinite access. |
| Online communication on Wii U and 3DS | Ended April 8, 2024 | Redownloads and patches are distinct from online play and other network communication. |
These dates apply to Nintendo’s affected systems and Nintendo’s stated policy. They do not establish a universal deadline for another company, region, console or account platform. For any other storefront, use that provider’s current closure notice as the controlling source.
Do this first: a complete pre-closure checklist
1. Inventory every account
List every account that has been used to buy software. A family may have purchases split across several Nintendo Accounts, console users or older account arrangements. Sign in with the original purchasing account; being on the same physical console is not enough if the entitlement belongs to another account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Record the account email or identifier and confirm that you can complete any required two-factor authentication.
- Check which console is linked to each account and avoid signing out until you understand the provider’s transfer rules.
- Keep recovery information current while the account service is still operating.
2. Build a purchase list
Open the platform’s purchase-history, redownload or account-library screen and record every base game, expansion, season pass, map pack and other downloadable item. Include in-game downloadable content that may not appear as a separate icon on the home screen. A season pass may be an entitlement that unlocks several individual downloads, so check both the pass and the content it grants.
3. Buy what is still available
Complete purchases before the exact cutoff shown in the provider’s notice, including its time zone. Do not wait for a future redownload option: redownload systems normally expose only items already purchased. If a title has multiple editions, confirm which edition contains the DLC you want before paying.

4. Download base games, DLC and updates
Start with the base game, then download every owned add-on and all available updates. Large libraries can fail partway through if storage fills, the console sleeps or the network session expires, so work in batches and check the result of each batch. Keep the console connected to power during long downloads.
5. Launch and validate each title
Start every game after installation. Look in the game’s downloadable-content, extras or in-game store menu to confirm that the add-on is recognized. Some platforms deliver an entitlement file or an in-game download separately from the main game; a title appearing on the home screen does not prove that all DLC is installed.
6. Preserve a working local copy
Do not delete a downloaded title simply to test whether redownload still works. If you need to reclaim space, remove a title only after confirming that the account sees it in the redownload list and that the platform’s post-closure policy is still active. Keep the console powered on periodically if the provider requires an entitlement check.
How to redownload a purchased game or DLC
The labels differ by platform and system software, but the sequence is consistent. On Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, use the original console and the account that made the purchase.
- Connect the console to the internet. Confirm the system date and network connection before opening the store.
- Open the platform’s eShop or account library. Choose the purchasing user or account; do not assume the currently selected local profile owns the item.
- Open the purchase-history, redownload or previously purchased section. Search for the title rather than relying only on the home screen.
- Select the game or DLC and choose the download command. Nintendo states that deleted Wii U eShop purchases can be redownloaded at no cost; the item must still be recorded as purchased.
- Check the destination storage. Choose internal storage or a compatible card when the system offers the choice, and verify free space before starting a large queue.
- Wait for installation to finish. A download that is listed as queued or paused is not yet a usable local copy.
- Install updates. Open the title after the base download and accept any available software update while update servers remain available.
- Launch the game and inspect its DLC menu. Confirm that each expansion, map or item you own appears in the game itself.
If an item is absent, switch back to the account that purchased it and refresh the purchase-history view. A different account, a bundled edition, a region mismatch or a DLC item delivered inside the game can make a correct purchase look missing.

Handling DLC, season passes and in-game content
DLC purchased separately
Record the exact add-on name and download it independently of the base game. A title update does not necessarily install paid DLC, and installing the base game does not prove that every add-on was fetched.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSeason passes and bundles
Check whether the pass itself appears in purchase history and whether it unlocks separate downloads. Download each component listed as owned. Keep the receipt or order record so you can identify the entitlement if a component is not shown.
In-game downloadable content
Some content is selected from a game’s own menu rather than from a separate console icon. Launch the game, open its downloadable-content or extras screen and complete any entitlement download there. Validate the content with a save or a menu entry that demonstrates it is available, without deleting your original save data.
Unpurchased content
Content you never bought before the sales cutoff is not covered by the provider’s redownload policy. A previously downloaded demo, trial or free item may have different terms from a paid purchase; record its status separately instead of assuming that every historical download is restorable.
Storage planning for a bulk download
Check free space before creating a long queue. Leave room for the game, DLC, temporary installation files and updates; a queue can fail even when the final installed size appears to fit. Download in groups, verify each group, then continue.

For a Nintendo 3DS, an SD or microSD card can provide additional working space, but compatibility is model-dependent. Before buying a card, check the console model, supported card type and capacity, required formatting, and whether an adapter is needed. A card that physically fits is not automatically supported by the system. Follow Nintendo’s current formatting and transfer instructions rather than improvising a file copy.
- Keep the console connected to power for extended downloads.
- Use a stable network and pause other high-bandwidth activity if downloads repeatedly fail.
- Do not remove a card while the system is downloading, installing or writing save data.
- After moving content to another card or console, open several titles to verify that their licenses and saves remain visible.
Updates, online play and account transfers are separate risks
Download every available patch before a service shutdown because an update server may have a shorter or different lifetime from redownload access. Nintendo’s published Wii U and 3DS timeline demonstrates this separation: online communication ended on April 8, 2024, while Nintendo said redownloads and software updates would continue for the foreseeable future.
Online play ending does not necessarily remove an installed single-player game, and a redownload service continuing does not guarantee that multiplayer, leaderboards, cloud functions or other network features will work. Make a title-by-title note of which features matter to you.
Do not factory-reset, unlink or transfer a console until you have read the provider’s current instructions. A reset can remove local files, while an account transfer can change which system is authorized to download. Complete downloads and validation first, and keep both the account credentials and the old console available until the transfer is confirmed.
Compare another storefront without guessing
There is no universal closure rule for PlayStation, Xbox, PC, mobile or other storefronts. Build a comparison from the platform owner’s current notice rather than applying Nintendo’s dates or wording elsewhere.

Troubleshooting common failures
The purchase is not listed
Sign out of the current local user only if the platform permits it safely, then sign in with the account that paid for the item. Check the purchase receipt, region and edition. A family member’s account or a different console profile may own the entitlement.
The game downloads but DLC is missing
Return to purchase history and download each add-on separately. Then launch the game and inspect its own DLC or extras menu. If a season pass is present but its components are not, look for each component under the pass or the game’s in-game download screen.
The download stops or reports insufficient space
Check free internal and card storage, remove only content you have verified elsewhere, restart the download and install in smaller batches. Do not interrupt a write operation or remove the storage card.
The title launches but an update cannot be found
Confirm that the console is online and that the title is the correct region or edition. If the provider has ended updates, retain the installed version and note which functions may require a missing patch. A later redownload cannot be assumed to restore an update that the server no longer offers.
A transfer or reset removed access
Stop making changes and consult the platform owner’s current transfer and account-linking instructions. Keep the original account and console information; do not create a replacement purchase that could obscure which account owns the license.
Preserve records without bypassing security
Keep lawful records of account identifiers, receipts, purchase dates, console serial information, downloaded versions and the provider’s closure notice. Save manuals and installation instructions where you are allowed to do so. This guide does not establish permission to bypass platform security, defeat digital-rights controls or redistribute copyrighted files. Use the platform’s supported downloads and transfers, and follow the provider’s license terms.
The safest preservation order is simple: purchase before the sales cutoff, download the base game and every owned add-on, install updates, launch and verify each title, then keep the working local copies and account access intact. Recheck the provider’s status before deleting anything, because a redownload promise can be narrower or shorter-lived than the original store.
