An ISO file is only a disc image; copying the .iso file itself to a flash drive usually does not make the drive bootable.
Windows 10 version 22H2 remains downloadable, but Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 7 support ended January 14, 2020, and Windows 8.1 support ended January 10, 2023. Use those older systems only when compatibility or recovery requires them, and obtain legacy media from Microsoft-authorized or manufacturer sources.
Before you begin
- A working computer with administrator access and a reliable internet connection.
- A blank USB flash drive. Microsoft specifies at least 8 GB for its Windows 10 tool; 16 GB is a safer general choice, and 32 GB is preferable for Ventoy or multiple ISOs.
- The target computer’s model, firmware mode and license information.
- A backup of important files. Creating the installer normally erases the USB; a clean Windows installation can erase the target computer’s partitions.
Choose the correct Windows edition, language and architecture. Home normally requires a Home license, while Pro requires Pro. Most computers should use 64-bit Windows; 32-bit is mainly for unusually old hardware or software. On an existing installation, check Settings > System > About > System type or, on older Windows, Control Panel > System.
Download only from Microsoft, an authorized licensing portal or the computer manufacturer. Avoid modified, “pre-activated” or “debloated” images, torrents and activation bypasses. An ISO does not grant a license, and a product key does not make an unknown ISO trustworthy.

Which Windows versions can you still download?
| Version | Current legitimate route | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 | Microsoft ISO page or Media Creation Tool: microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 | Version 22H2 is available, but normal Microsoft support ended October 14, 2025. |
| Windows 8/8.1 | Original retail media, OEM recovery media, eligible Visual Studio or volume-licensing portals, or a previously obtained ISO whose hash can be verified | Microsoft’s general download hub does not guarantee a current public consumer ISO workflow. Windows 8.1 support ended January 10, 2023. |
| Windows 7 | Original DVD/ISO, manufacturer recovery media or partition, or an eligible business/volume-license portal | The former consumer page redirects to microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7. Support ended January 14, 2020. |
For entitlement-based downloads, use Microsoft’s Visual Studio subscriptions or licensing information. Do not assume that an old Windows 7 or 8.1 key will activate Windows 10 in 2026.
Fastest Windows 10 method: Media Creation Tool
- Open Microsoft’s Windows 10 download page and select Download tool now under Create Windows 10 installation media.
- Run the tool as administrator and accept the license terms.
- Select Create installation media for another PC.
- Choose the language, Windows 10 edition and 32-bit, 64-bit or both architectures when offered.
- Choose USB flash drive, insert the blank drive and select it carefully.
- Confirm the erase warning and wait while Windows downloads and prepares the installer.
- Safely eject the USB when the tool reports completion.
This is Microsoft’s simplest official route for Windows 10. It requires a working host computer and internet access and is not a universal Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 creation tool. Microsoft’s installation-media guidance is at support.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows/Deployment/Install-Upgrade/create-installation-media-for-windows.
Use Rufus when you already have an ISO
Rufus is a free, portable utility for writing an ISO to a bootable USB. Download it only from rufus.ie/en/; the current site lists Windows 8 or later as its host requirement. The release number and interface can change.
- Insert the USB and start Rufus.
- Under Device, select the correct drive.
- Under Boot selection, choose Disk or ISO image, select Select, and open the legitimate ISO.
- Use GPT and UEFI for most modern computers. Use MBR with legacy BIOS or UEFI-CSM on older systems.
- Choose FAT32 where practical for broad UEFI compatibility. Choose NTFS when the image contains a file larger than 4 GB or Rufus requires it.
- Review the erase warning, start the process and safely eject the completed drive.
Rufus may show Windows-specific customization options. These can change between releases; bypassing hardware or account requirements can leave an installation unsupported, so do not treat such options as a substitute for meeting Microsoft’s requirements.
Put several ISOs on one USB with Ventoy
Ventoy installs a boot environment once, after which you copy ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD(x) or EFI files to the data partition and choose one from a menu. It supports MBR and GPT and is useful for technicians or recovery drives. See ventoy.net/en/index.html and ventoy.net/en/download.html.

- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
- Run Ventoy2Disk, select the USB and choose Install, confirming that it will be erased.
- Afterward, open the large data partition and copy legitimate Windows ISO files to it.
- Boot the target computer from the USB and select the desired ISO in Ventoy’s menu.
Ventoy is more complex than necessary for one installer, but it avoids rewriting the drive for every ISO and handles images larger than 4 GB.
Advanced manual ISO method
Microsoft documents a FAT32 workflow at learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/install-windows-from-a-usb-flash-drive?view=windows-11. Format the correct USB as FAT32, make it active when a legacy BIOS workflow requires that, mount the ISO and copy its contents. Formatting the wrong disk permanently destroys data.
FAT32 cannot hold a single file larger than 4 GB. If install.wim exceeds that limit, verify the drive letters in File Explorer first. With the ISO mounted as D: and USB as E:, Microsoft’s example is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesrobocopy D: E: /s /max:3800000000
Dism /Split-Image /ImageFile:D:sourcesinstall.wim /SWMFile:E:sourcesinstall.swm /FileSize:3800
Setup uses the resulting install.swm files. Rufus with appropriate NTFS handling or Ventoy is safer for most readers.

Get-FileHash "C:UsersYourNameDownloadsWindows.iso" -Algorithm SHA256
Compare the SHA-256 result with the published value on Microsoft’s ISO page: microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO. A matching hash confirms integrity against that checksum; it does not prove that you own a Windows license.
Boot the target PC from USB
- Insert the USB and shut the computer down completely.
- Power it on and repeatedly press the manufacturer’s boot-menu key. Common keys are
F12,F11,F10,F9,Esc,F2andDelete. - Select the entry identifying the USB, preferably its UEFI entry on a modern PC.
If it is missing, try another port (a rear motherboard port on a desktop), avoid hubs, recreate the media, test another drive and check whether firmware is set to UEFI, Legacy or CSM. Temporarily disabling Fast Boot can help. Do not permanently disable Secure Boot as a routine measure; consult the manufacturer, and re-enable it afterward where possible.

Choose the right installation path
Upgrade or repair installation
Start setup.exe from the existing Windows desktop when you intend to preserve applications, files and settings. A digital license may activate automatically after the same edition is reinstalled and the computer goes online.
Clean installation
Booting from USB and choosing a custom installation can delete Windows, applications and personal files. Back up before reaching the partition screen, identify disks by capacity and model, and never delete a partition merely because it has a familiar disk number.
Product keys and editions
Choose I don’t have a product key only when you have a valid digital entitlement or will activate later. Install the previously licensed edition. Many modern computers store an OEM key in firmware and apply it automatically when the edition matches; enterprise and volume-license editions follow different channels.

Common problems and fixes
Windows Setup cannot see the SSD
Check UEFI storage-controller settings and obtain the manufacturer’s storage driver. On Windows 7, newer NVMe, USB 3.x and chipset hardware may lack drivers entirely; USB 2.0 ports, an updated OEM recovery image or advanced driver injection may be needed.

Try USB 2.0 ports and model-specific drivers. A modern PC may simply be unsuitable for Windows 7 because required drivers are unavailable.
“Windows cannot be installed to this disk”
This commonly indicates a GPT/MBR and UEFI/Legacy mismatch, protected or encrypted partitions, or a missing storage driver. Correcting partitions can destroy data, so stop and back up before deleting anything.
The PC boots back into the existing Windows
The internal disk may have been selected, Fast Startup may have prevented a full shutdown, or the USB’s boot mode may not match firmware. Use the one-time boot menu and recreate or retest the USB.
Activation fails
Confirm the edition, key type (OEM, retail or volume), internet connection and device entitlement. Old Windows 7 and 8.1 keys are not guaranteed Windows 10 activation keys in 2026. Never use unofficial activators.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a 4 GB USB drive?
It is below Microsoft’s 8 GB requirement for the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool. Use at least 8 GB, preferably 16 GB.
Can I copy the ISO directly to the USB?
Usually no. Use Media Creation Tool, Rufus, Ventoy or a correctly prepared manual installer so the USB has bootable structures and extracted files.
Will creating the USB erase my computer?
The creation tool erases the selected USB, not the computer’s internal drive. Installing Windows—especially a custom clean install—can erase the internal drive.
Is Rufus safe?
Download it from https://rufus.ie/en/ and use an ISO from a legitimate source. Rufus itself does not make an unofficial or modified ISO trustworthy.
Should I use FAT32 or NTFS?
FAT32 has broad firmware compatibility but cannot store a single file over 4 GB. NTFS, Rufus’s UEFI handling or Ventoy may be appropriate for larger images; firmware support varies.
Can I install Windows 7 on a modern UEFI computer?
Sometimes, but Secure Boot, NVMe, USB 3.x and chipset-driver limitations frequently prevent a reliable installation. Check the manufacturer’s Windows 7 support before proceeding.
The Bottom Line
For Windows 10, use Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool unless you already have a verified ISO; then Rufus is the straightforward choice. Use Ventoy for multiple images, and reserve manual FAT32 preparation for advanced users. Match the edition, language, architecture, license and firmware mode, and back up before any clean installation.
